Demand: Definition and Determinants in A-Level Economics |

📚 Demand: Definition and Determinants in A-Level Economics |

In A-Level Economics, demand is one of the most fundamental concepts you will encounter. It forms the foundation of market analysis and helps explain how prices are determined in a market economy. Understanding the precise definition of demand, the law of demand, and the factors that influence it is essential for tackling both multiple-choice questions and essays in the CIE examination.

1. The Definition of Demand |

Demand is defined as the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various price levels over a given period of time. Two key elements must both be present: the willingness to buy and the ability to buy, which means having sufficient purchasing power. Merely wanting a product does not constitute demand in the economic sense.

For example, a student may wish to buy a Ferrari, but without the income to afford it, this wish remains a desire rather than demand. In economics, effective demand requires both desire and the financial means to back it up.

2. The Law of Demand |

The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus (all other things being equal), as the price of a good increases, the quantity demanded of that good falls; and as the price decreases, the quantity demanded rises. There is an inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded.

This inverse relationship can be explained by two main effects. First, the income effect: when the price of a good falls, consumers’ real purchasing power increases, enabling them to buy more of the good. Second, the substitution effect: when the price of a good falls, it becomes relatively cheaper compared to substitutes, so consumers switch towards the now-cheaper good.

Price ↑ → Quantity Demanded ↓

Price ↓ → Quantity Demanded ↑

3. Demand Schedule and Demand Curve |

A demand schedule is a table that shows the relationship between the price of a good and the quantity demanded over a given period, holding other factors constant. It demonstrates clearly how quantity demanded responds to changes in price.

Price (£) Quantity Demanded (units)
5 100
4 200
3 300
2 400
1 500

When plotted on a graph with price on the vertical axis and quantity demanded on the horizontal axis, the demand schedule produces a downward-sloping demand curve, labelled D. The curve slopes downwards from left to right, visually representing the inverse relationship in the law of demand.

4. Movements Along vs. Shifts of the Demand Curve |

It is crucial to distinguish between a movement along the demand curve and a shift of the demand curve. A movement along the demand curve occurs when there is a change in the price of the good itself, ceteris paribus. This is referred to as a change in quantity demanded. For example, if the price of coffee falls from £3 to £2 per cup, the quantity demanded increases, shown by a movement from point A to point B along the same demand curve.

A shift of the demand curve occurs when a factor other than the price of the good itself changes. This is referred to as a change in demand. A rightward shift of the demand curve indicates an increase in demand at every price level, while a leftward shift indicates a decrease. For instance, if incomes rise worldwide, the entire demand curve for coffee shifts to the right from D1 to D2, meaning more coffee is demanded at every price.

Change in Price of the Good → Movement Along the Curve

Change in Other Factors → Shift of the Curve

5. Determinants of Demand |

The factors that cause the demand curve to shift are known as the determinants of demand or the non-price determinants of demand. The acronym PIRATES is commonly used to remember them: Population, Income, Related goods, Advertising and awareness, Tastes and preferences, Expectations, and Seasons.

  • Population — An increase in the size of the population typically raises demand for most goods and services.
  • Income — For normal goods, higher consumer incomes increase demand; for inferior goods, higher incomes decrease demand.
  • Related goods (substitutes and complements) — Changes in the prices of substitute or complementary goods affect demand.
  • Advertising and awareness — Effective advertising can increase consumer awareness and shift demand outward.
  • Tastes and preferences — Fashion trends and changing consumer preferences directly influence demand.
  • Expectations — If consumers expect future prices to rise, current demand may increase as they purchase now.
  • Seasons — Seasonal factors affect demand; for example, demand for ice cream rises in summer.

6. Normal Goods and Inferior Goods |

Goods can be classified based on how their demand responds to changes in consumer income. A normal good is one for which demand increases when income increases. Most goods, such as restaurant meals, branded clothing, and foreign holidays, fall into this category. The income elasticity of demand for normal goods is positive.

An inferior good is one for which demand decreases when income increases. This does not mean the good is of low quality; rather, consumers switch to more desirable alternatives as their incomes rise. Examples include supermarket own-brand products, used cars, and instant noodles. The income elasticity of demand for inferior goods is negative. As income rises, the demand curve for inferior goods shifts to the left.

The distinction between normal and inferior goods is not fixed. The classification can change with the level of development of the economy and the income level of the individual consumer. A good that is considered inferior in a high-income country may be a normal good in a low-income country.

7. Substitutes and Complements |

The prices of related goods are a major determinant of demand. Substitutes are goods that satisfy a similar need and can be used in place of each other, such as tea and coffee, or butter and margarine. When the price of a substitute rises, the demand for the original good increases, shifting its demand curve to the right. For example, if the price of coffee rises, tea becomes relatively cheaper and consumers buy more tea.

Complements are goods that are used together in consumption, such as cars and petrol, or printers and ink cartridges. When the price of a complement rises, the demand for the original good decreases, shifting its demand curve to the left. For instance, if the government raises the fuel tax and petrol prices rise significantly, the demand for cars may fall because the cost of running a car increases.

Price of Substitute ↑ → Demand for the Good ↑ (curve shifts right)

Price of Complement ↑ → Demand for the Good ↓ (curve shifts left)

8. Diminishing Marginal Utility |

The law of diminishing marginal utility provides another explanation for the downward-sloping demand curve. Marginal utility is the additional satisfaction or benefit a consumer gains from consuming one more unit of a good or service. The law states that as a consumer consumes successive units of a good, the additional utility derived from each additional unit eventually diminishes.

For example, when you are very thirsty, the first glass of water gives you enormous satisfaction. The second glass still gives satisfaction, but less than the first. By the fourth or fifth glass, the additional pleasure has become very small. Because each additional unit provides less satisfaction, consumers are only willing to pay a lower price for each successive unit. This explains why the demand curve slopes downward.

While the diminishing marginal utility approach is more commonly associated with explaining consumer behaviour from a subjective perspective, it reinforces the intuitive logic behind the law of demand. At higher prices, fewer consumers are willing and able to buy, because their marginal valuation of the good is lower than the price.

9. Exceptions to the Law of Demand |

Although the law of demand generally holds, there are notable exceptions that students should be aware of. Giffen goods are a rare type of inferior good for which demand increases as price rises. This is because for very poor consumers, these goods (such as basic staples like bread or potatoes) consume the majority of their budget. When the price of bread rises, the consumer is so much poorer in real terms that they can no longer afford meat and substitutes, and must buy even more bread to survive.

Veblen goods are luxury items whose demand increases as price rises, because consumers view the high price as a signal of status and exclusivity. Examples include designer handbags, luxury watches, and prestige cars. These goods are consumed for their conspicuous display of wealth, so a higher price can actually increase their appeal.

Speculative behaviour in financial markets can also create short-term upward-sloping demand curves. If investors expect prices to keep rising, they may buy more as prices rise, hoping to sell later at a profit. During speculative bubbles, the normal relationship between price and quantity demanded can break down temporarily.

10. Demand and the CIE Examination | 需求概念与CIE考试

In the CIE A-Level Economics examination, questions on demand frequently appear in Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (structured questions), and Paper 4 (essays). Students should be prepared to draw demand curves accurately, explain the difference between a movement along and a shift of the curve, and analyse the effects of various determinants on demand.

A common examination error is confusing “change in quantity demanded” with “change in demand”. Remember: a change in the price of the good itself causes a movement along the demand curve; a change in any non-price determinant causes a shift of the entire curve. Drawing this distinction clearly in your answers will help you score higher marks.

For essays, always use real-world examples to support your explanations. Whether discussing the impact of a rise in smartphone prices on demand, or how an advertising campaign shifts the demand curve for a beverage, concrete examples demonstrate a deeper understanding of the theoretical concepts.
