English Reading Skills: Quickly Locating Key Points in a Text | 英语阅读技巧:快速定位文章重点

📚 English Reading Skills: Quickly Locating Key Points in a Text | 英语阅读技巧:快速定位文章重点

In both academic examinations and everyday reading, the ability to quickly locate the central ideas, supporting details, and structural cues of a passage is an essential skill. This article provides structured techniques for identifying key information efficiently, using examples from typical examination texts.

无论是在学术考试还是日常阅读中,快速定位文章的主旨、支撑细节和结构线索都是一项关键技能。本文将提供系统化的技巧,帮助你高效识别关键信息,并辅以典型考试文本中的实例。

1. Understanding Text Organisation | 理解文本结构

Before you can locate key points, you must understand how English texts are organised. Most paragraphs follow a pattern: a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and sometimes a concluding sentence.

在定位关键点之前,你必须理解英语文本的编排方式。大多数段落遵循一种模式:主题句、支撑句,有时还有结论句。

  • The topic sentence is usually the first or second sentence of a paragraph. It states the main idea.

    主题句通常是段落的第一句或第二句,它陈述主要观点。

  • Supporting sentences provide evidence, examples, or explanations that develop the topic.

    支撑句提供证据、例子或解释来展开主题。

  • A concluding sentence may summarise the point or lead to the next paragraph.

    结论句可能总结要点或引出下一段。

When reading quickly, train your eyes to recognise the first two sentences of each paragraph. If the paragraph is long, the last sentence also deserves attention.

快速阅读时,训练你的目光去识别每段的前两句。如果段落较长,最后一句也值得关注。

2. Using Headings and Subheadings | 利用标题和小标题

Headings are the most visible signposts in any text. They tell you what the following section will be about. In academic articles, newspapers, and exam passages, headings often summarise the key theme of each block of text.

标题是任何文本中最明显的路标。它们告诉你接下来的部分讲什么。在学术文章、报纸和考试文章中,标题通常概括每段文本的主题。

When you see a heading, turn it into a question. For example, if the heading is ‘Causes of Climate Change’, ask ‘What are the causes?’ Then scan the section for that answer.

当你看到标题时,把它变成一个问句。例如,如果标题是“气候变化的成因”,就问“成因是什么?”然后浏览这一节寻找答案。

Subheadings are equally useful. They break a long text into smaller, digestible units. In exams, you may not have time to read every word, but reading all headings and subheadings first gives you a skeleton of the article.

小标题同样有用。它们把长文本分解成更小、更易消化的单元。在考试中,你可能没有时间读每一个单词,但先读所有标题和小标题能给你文章的骨架。

3. Identifying the Thesis Statement | 识别中心论点

The thesis statement is the central argument or message of the entire passage. You will often find it at the end of the introduction paragraph. Once you know the thesis, every other detail in the text can be placed in relation to it.

中心论点是一段文本的核心论点或信息。你常常能在引言段末尾找到它。一旦知道了论点,文本中的其他细节都能与之关联起来。

For example, consider the following introduction:

例如,考虑以下引言:

‘Although online learning has many benefits, it cannot fully replace face-to-face interaction in education.’

This sentence tells you that the author will argue about the limitations of online learning. The rest of the passage will likely present evidence for this view, possibly with counterarguments.

这句话告诉你作者将论证网络学习的局限。文章的其余部分很可能呈现支持这一观点的证据,也可能包含反方论点。

In quick reading, underline or highlight the thesis. Then, as you skim each paragraph, check whether the paragraph supports, explains, or challenges this thesis.

在快速阅读中,划出或高亮中心论点。然后,在浏览每段时,检查该段是否支持、解释或挑战这一论点。

4. Skimming for Gist | 略读抓住大意

Skimming is a technique where you read the main headings, the first and last lines of paragraphs, and any bold or italicised terms. You do not read every word. The purpose is to grasp the overall meaning in a short amount of time.

略读是一种阅读技巧:你阅读主要标题、段落的首末行以及任何粗体或斜体术语。你不逐字阅读。目的就是短时间内掌握整体含义。

To skim effectively, move your eyes quickly across each line, stopping only at key words. Key words are often nouns and verbs, not articles or prepositions.

要有效略读,快速移动目光穿过每一行,只在关键词处停顿。关键词通常是名词和动词,而不是冠词或介词。

For instance, a sentence like ‘The rapid increase in urban population has caused severe housing shortages in many developing countries’ can be reduced to ‘rapid increase – urban population – caused – housing shortages’.

例如,像“城市人口的迅速增加已在许多发展中国家导致严重的住房短缺”这样的句子可以简化为“迅速增加——城市人口——导致——住房短缺”。

Skimming is not random reading. It requires focus and a clear purpose. Ask yourself: ‘What is each paragraph about?’ and answer with one phrase.

略读不是随意阅读。它需要专注和清晰的目的。问自己:“每段在讲什么?”并用一个短语回答。

5. Scanning for Specific Information | 扫读查找具体信息

While skimming gives you the gist, scanning helps you find specific facts such as names, dates, numbers, or definitions. This is especially useful for multiple-choice questions that ask for particular details.

略读让你了解大意,而扫读帮助你找到具体事实,如人名、日期、数字或定义。这尤其在回答考查特定细节的选择题时非常有用。

When scanning, do not read the whole passage again. Instead, look for visual clues:

扫读时,不要再次阅读全文。相反,寻找视觉线索:

  • Capitalised words, which may be proper nouns or acronyms.

    大写单词,可能是专有名词或缩写词。

  • Numbers and dates, which are easy to spot.

    数字和日期,容易识别。

  • Key terms that match the question words.

    与问题关键词匹配的关键术语。

For example, if a question asks ‘In what year was the company founded?’, scan for a four-digit number near the word ‘founded’ or ‘established’.

例如,如果问题问“公司成立于哪一年?”,就在“founded”或“established”附近扫读一个四位数年份。

6. Paying Attention to Transition Words | 关注过渡词

Transition words are bridges between ideas. They signal contrast, addition, cause and effect, sequence, or conclusion. Recognising them can save you time because they tell you what the next sentence will do.

过渡词是连接观点的桥梁。它们表明对比、递进、因果、顺序或结论。识别它们能节省你的时间,因为它们告诉你下一句的作用。

Here are some common categories:

以下是一些常见类别:

Function 功能 Examples 例子
Contrast 对比 however, but, on the other hand, although
Addition 递进 furthermore, moreover, in addition
Cause and effect 因果 therefore, thus, because, as a result
Sequence 顺序 firstly, next, finally
Conclusion 结论 in conclusion, to sum up, overall

When you see ‘however’, expect a change of direction. When you see ‘therefore’, expect a result. Noticing these cues helps you decide which parts of the text are important.

当你看到“however”,预料接下来的方向将转变。当你看到“therefore”,预料将出现结果。注意这些线索能帮助你判断文本哪些部分重要。

7. Reading the First and Last Paragraphs Carefully | 仔细阅读首段和尾段

The introduction paragraph usually presents the topic and the thesis. The conclusion paragraph summarises the author’s final position. In many texts, these two paragraphs contain 80% of the global message.

引言段通常呈现主题和中心论点。结论段总结作者的最终立场。在许多文本中,这两段包含了整体信息的80%。

Therefore, when you are short on time, read the first and last paragraphs in full, and skim the middle paragraphs. This strategy is known as ‘reading the frame’.

因此,当你时间不足时,完整阅读第一段和最后一段,略读中间段落。这种策略被称为“阅读框架”。

For example, if you are asked to choose the best title for a passage, the correct answer is often a paraphrase of the thesis in the introduction or the conclusion.

例如,如果要求你为文章选择最佳标题,正确答案通常是对引言或结论中论点的转述。

8. Highlighting Key Words in Questions | 划出问题中的关键词

In exam settings, you will answer questions after reading. A powerful technique is to read the questions first, then return to the passage. This turns your reading into a search for answers.

在考试环境中,你会在阅读后回答题目。一个强大的技巧是先读题目,再返回文章。这让你的阅读变成一次寻找答案的过程。

Circle or underline the content words in each question, such as ‘reason for’, ‘method’, ‘disadvantage’, ‘in paragraph 3’. Then use these words as guides while scanning.

圈出或划出每个问题中的实义词,如“原因”、“方法”、“劣势”、“第三段中”。然后用这些词作为扫读的向导。

Be careful: sometimes the answer uses synonyms, not the exact words from the question. For instance, if the question says ‘difficulty’, the text may say ‘challenge’ or ‘obstacle’.

注意:有时答案使用同义词,而不是问题中的原词。例如,如果问题说“difficulty”,文章可能说“challenge”或“obstacle”。

9. Dealing with Unknown Vocabulary | 应对生词

Unexpected words can distract you from finding key points. However, you do not need to understand every word to understand the main idea.

生词可能分散你的注意力,影响你寻找关键点。但是,你不需要理解每一个词才能理解大意。

Use context clues: read the sentences before and after the unknown word. Often, the surrounding text defines it, gives an example, or contrasts it with something known.

利用上下文线索:阅读生词前后的句子。通常,周围文本会对其下定义、给出例子或与已知信息进行对比。

Look at this example:

看这个例子:

‘The arid landscape, with its dry riverbeds and sparse vegetation, receives less than 50 mm of rain each year.’

Even if you do not know ‘arid’, the phrases ‘dry riverbeds’ and ‘less than 50 mm of rain’ tell you it means ‘dry’.

即使你不认识“arid”,“干涸的河床”和“年降雨量不足50毫米”这样的短语也告诉你它意为“干燥的”。

Another strategy is to ignore a difficult word if it appears only once. Rarely does one unknown word block your ability to answer a question about the main idea.

另一个策略是:如果一个难词只出现一次,就忽略它。一个生词很少会妨碍你回答关于主旨的题目。

10. Using Graphic Features | 利用图表特征

In many articles, especially in IELTS or A-Level reading, you will find graphs, tables, pictures, or diagrams. These visual elements often summarise complex information in a compact way.

在许多文章中,尤其是雅思或A-Level阅读中,你会看到图表、表格、图片或示意图。这些视觉元素常常以紧凑的方式总结复杂信息。

Before reading the full text, take a few seconds to examine any visual. Ask: What is the topic? What are the units? Is there a trend? This will give you a preview of the data-related content.

在阅读全文之前,花几秒钟查看任何视觉元素。问:主题是什么?单位是什么?有趋势吗?这将为你预览与数据相关的内容。

However, remember that graphs usually require interpretation. The author may use the graph to support a point, but the main idea will still be expressed in words in the text.

然而,记住图表通常需要解读。作者可能用图表来支持某个观点,但主旨仍然会用文字表达。

11. Practice with a Sample Text | 用示例文本练习

Let us apply these techniques to a short sample passage.

让我们把这些技巧应用于一段简短的示例文本。

‘Telework, once considered a rare privilege, has become routine for millions. Human resource departments now face the challenge of maintaining company culture in a virtual environment. While remote work boosts individual productivity, it also weakens spontaneous collaboration. Therefore, many firms are adopting hybrid schedules as a compromise.’

If you skim, the key words are: Telework – routine – challenge – company culture – remote work – boosts productivity – weakens collaboration – hybrid schedules.

如果你略读,关键词是:远程办公——常规——挑战——公司文化——远程工作——提升效率——削弱协作——混合办公。

If a question asks ‘What is the main problem mentioned about remote work?’, scan for ‘challenge’ or ‘weakens’. The answer is that it weakens spontaneous collaboration.

如果问题问“文中提到的远程办公的主要问题是什么?”,扫读“challenge”或“weakens”。答案是它削弱了自发的协作。

If you pay attention to ‘therefore’, you know the last sentence is the result. Thus, the author’s conclusion is that hybrid schedules are a solution.

如果你注意“therefore”,你知道最后一句是结果。因此,作者的结论是混合办公是一种解决方案。

12. Building Speed through Daily Practice | 通过每日练习提高速度

No technique works without practice. Set aside 15 minutes each day for timed reading. Use articles from news websites, encyclopaedias, or exam preparation books.

任何技巧都离不开练习。每天留出15分钟进行限时阅读。使用新闻网站、百科全书或备考书籍中的文章。

During each practice session, follow a simple routine:

每次练习时,遵循一个简单的流程:

  1. Read the title and all headings (20 seconds).

    阅读标题和所有小标题(20秒)。

  2. Read the first and last paragraphs in full (60 seconds).

    完整阅读第一段和最后一段(60秒)。

  3. Skim the first sentence of every other paragraph (60 seconds).

    略读其余每段的第一个句子(60秒)。

  4. Answer 3-5 comprehension questions without returning to the text.

    不返回文章,回答3-5道理解题。

After a week of this routine, you will find that your eyes naturally move to the most informative words. Your brain will develop an instinct for locating key points faster.

坚持这个流程一周后,你会发现你的眼睛自然而然地移向信息量最大的词。你的大脑会培养出更快定位关键点的直觉。

Remember that speed comes from precision: knowing what to ignore is just as important as knowing what to read.

记住,速度来自精准:知道忽略什么与知道阅读什么同样重要。
