Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a given period of time, usually one year. The phrase “within a country’s borders” is critical: it includes output by foreign-owned firms operating domestically, but excludes output by domestic firms operating abroad. A Toyota factory in the UK counts towards UK GDP, not Japanese GDP.
