📚 IELTS Grammar Essentials: A Rapid System Review | 雅思语法知识体系快速梳理

Grammar is the skeleton of the IELTS exam. Whether you are writing Task 1 or Task 2, speaking in Part 1 or Part 3, or tackling the reading and listening sections, a solid command of grammar powers both comprehension and expression. This article offers a rapid, structured review of the most essential grammar points you need for a high band score.

语法是雅思考试的骨架。无论你是在完成写作任务一或任务二,在口语第一部分或第三部分发言,还是在应对阅读和听力部分,扎实的语法能力都能为理解和表达提供动力。本文提供一份快速、系统化的复习,覆盖你冲击高分所需的最核心语法要点。

1. Sentence Structure Essentials | 句子结构基础

Every English sentence must contain a subject and a verb. The four basic sentence types are simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. Simple sentences contain one independent clause; compound sentences join two independent clauses with coordinating conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘or’, ‘so’; complex sentences use subordinating conjunctions like ‘because’, ‘although’, ‘when’, or relative pronouns like ‘which’, ‘who’, ‘that’.

每个英语句子都必须包含主语和谓语。四种基本句型是简单句、并列句、复合句和并列复合句。简单句包含一个独立分句;并列句用并列连词如’and’、’but’、’or’、’so’连接两个独立分句;复合句使用从属连词如’because’、’although’、’when’,或关系代词如’which’、’who’、’that’。

  • Simple: ‘Urbanisation is accelerating.’

    简单句:’城市化正在加速。’

  • Compound: ‘Urbanisation is accelerating, and governments must respond.’

    并列句:’城市化正在加速,政府必须作出回应。’

  • Complex: ‘Urbanisation is accelerating, which creates both opportunities and risks.’

    复合句:’城市化正在加速,这既带来机遇也带来风险。’

For IELTS, avoid writing purely in simple sentences. Examiners reward a mix of sentence types because it demonstrates grammatical range and flexibility. However, do not force complexity; clarity always comes first.

在雅思考试中,避免完全使用简单句。考官奖励混合句型,因为这展示了语法多样性和灵活性。然而,不要强行堆砌复杂结构;清晰永远是第一位的。

2. Tenses: Time and Aspect Mastery | 时态:时间与体

English has twelve main tense-aspect combinations, formed by combining past, present, and future time with simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous aspects. For IELTS, the most heavily tested tenses are present simple, present perfect, past simple, and future forms with ‘will’ or ‘be going to’.

英语有十二种主要的时态-体组合,由过去、现在、将来三个时间和一般、进行、完成、完成进行四种体态组合而成。在雅思中,最高频考查的时态是一般现在时、现在完成时、一般过去时,以及用’will’或’be going to’表达的未来形式。

present simple → habitual or factual: ‘People often misunderstand this issue.’
present perfect → past action with present relevance: ‘Pollution has become a global crisis.’
past simple → completed past action: ‘The government introduced a new policy in 2020.’

In Writing Task 1 with a line graph or bar chart, use past simple for clearly finished time periods, present simple for general trends, and future forms if the chart makes predictions. In Task 2 essays, present simple is your default, but present perfect is excellent for linking past causes to current situations.

在涉及折线图或柱状图的写作任务一中,对于明显已经结束的时间段使用一般过去时,对总体趋势使用一般现在时,若图表包含预测则使用将来形式。在任务二议论文中,一般现在时是默认时态,但用现在完成时连接过去原因与当前状况效果极佳。

3. Conditionals: If and Its Many Forms | 条件句:If 的多种形态

Conditional sentences express real or unreal situations. The zero conditional states general truths: ‘If you heat water, it boils.’ The first conditional describes possible future outcomes: ‘If the trend continues, the city will face severe congestion.’ The second conditional describes hypothetical or unlikely present situations: ‘If I were richer, I would donate more.’ The third conditional expresses past regrets or imaginary past results: ‘If they had invested earlier, they would have saved money.’

条件句表达真实或非真实的情况。零条件句陈述普遍真理:’如果你加热水,它会沸腾。’第一条件句描述未来可能的结果:’如果这一趋势持续,该城市将面临严重拥堵。’第二条件句描述假设的或不太可能的现在情况:’如果我有钱一些,我会捐更多。’第三条件句表达过去的遗憾或对过去结果的想象:’如果他们早点投资,他们本可以省钱。’

Two advanced patterns are especially useful for IELTS band 7+. The mixed conditional combines a past condition with a present result: ‘If she had trained harder, she would now be an expert.’ An alternative is to use ‘unless’, ‘provided that’, or ‘otherwise’ for variety: ‘Unless urgent action is taken, the problem will worsen.’

两种高级模式对雅思7分以上尤为有用。混合条件句将过去条件与现在结果结合:’如果她当时更努力训练,她现在就是专家了。’另一种是用’unless’、’provided that’或’otherwise’来增加多样性:’除非采取紧急行动,否则问题会恶化。’

4. Passive Voice: When and How to Use It | 被动语态:何时用与如何用

The passive voice is formed with ‘be’ plus the past participle. It shifts focus from the doer to the action or the receiver: ‘The new law was passed’ instead of ‘The government passed the new law.’ In IELTS, the passive is essential in Writing Task 1 process diagrams and in describing data: ‘The value is measured in billions.’

被动语态由’be’加过去分词构成。它将焦点从施事者转移到动作或受事者上:’新法律被通过了’,而不是’政府通过了新法律’。在雅思中,被动语态在写作任务一的流程图和数据描述中至关重要:’该数值以十亿为单位计量。’

  • Use passive when the agent is unknown or unimportant: ‘The samples were collected in 2021.’

    当施事者未知或不重要时使用被动:’样本于2021年被采集。’

  • Use passive to create an objective academic tone: ‘It is believed that climate change is irreversible.’

    使用被动来营造客观学术语气:’人们相信气候变化是不可逆的。’

Beware of overusing the passive. Too many passive structures can sound wordy and evasive. In Task 2 opinion essays, active voice is often more direct and persuasive. A good balance is to use passive for general processes and active for your own opinions.

注意不要过度使用被动。过多被动结构会显得冗长且回避问题。在任务二观点类文章中,主动语态通常更直接、更有说服力。最佳平衡是:描述一般流程时用被动,表达个人观点时用主动。

5. Relative Clauses: Adding Detail Elegantly | 定语从句:优雅添加细节

Relative clauses allow you to combine two ideas into one fluent sentence without repeating nouns. Defining relative clauses identify the noun: ‘The policy that was introduced is controversial.’ Non-defining relative clauses add extra, non-essential information and are separated by commas: ‘The policy, which was announced in March, caused debate.’

定语从句让你将两个想法合并成一个流畅的句子,而不必重复名词。限制性定语从句用来明确所指名词:’被引入的那项政策是有争议的。’非限制性定语从句添加额外的、非必要的信息,并用逗号隔开:’这项于三月份宣布的政策引发了争论。’

‘which’ for things · ‘who’ for people · ‘whose’ for possession · ‘where’ for places · ‘when’ for times

An advanced technique is to replace ‘which + be’ with a participle phrase for concision: ‘The data, which was collected carefully, proved reliable’ becomes ‘The data, carefully collected, proved reliable.’ This creates a higher register and saves words.

一种高级技巧是用分词短语替代’which + be’以追求简洁:’这些数据,被仔细收集,证明可靠’可改写为’这些被仔细收集的数据证明可靠。’这能提升语域并节省字数。

6. Modals: Expressing Attitude and Necessity | 情态动词:表达态度与必要性

Modal verbs express ability, permission, obligation, possibility, and deduction. The key modals are ‘can’, ‘could’, ‘may’, ‘might’, ‘must’, ‘shall’, ‘should’, ‘will’, ‘would’, and ‘ought to’. In IELTS speaking, modals help you sound polite and nuanced: ‘Could you clarify that?’ or ‘I might argue that…’.

情态动词表达能力、许可、义务、可能性和推断。核心情态动词包括’can’、’could’、’may’、’might’、’must’、’shall’、’should’、’will’、’would’和’ought to’。在雅思口语中,情态动词让你的表达更有礼貌和细微差别:’你能澄清一下吗?’或’我可能会辩称……’。

  • Strong necessity: ‘Governments must regulate emissions.’

    强必要性:’政府必须监管排放。’

  • Recommendation: ‘Individuals should reduce waste.’

    建议:’个人应该减少浪费。’

  • Possibility: ‘This approach may lead to higher costs.’

    可能性:’这种方法可能导致更高成本。’

  • Logical deduction: ‘The figures cannot be accurate because they contradict the survey.’

    逻辑推断:’这些数字不可能是准确的,因为它们与调查相矛盾。’

Be careful with ‘must’ for obligation in academic writing. It can sound overly forceful. ‘Need to’ or ‘it is essential to’ often work better in formal essays. In speaking, ‘would’ is a magic word for hypothetical scenarios and polite suggestions.

在学术写作中使用’must’表示义务时要小心,它可能听起来过于强硬。’need to’或’it is essential to’在正式文章中往往更合适。在口语中,’would’是处理假设情景和礼貌建议的神奇词汇。

7. Articles and Determiners: Precision in Reference | 冠词与限定词:指称的精确性

English articles are a persistent challenge for Chinese speakers because Mandarin has no direct equivalent. The indefinite article ‘a/an’ introduces a non-specific singular noun: ‘A solution is needed.’ The definite article ‘the’ refers to specific or already-mentioned nouns: ‘The solution proposed in the report failed.’ No article is used for general plurals or uncountable nouns: ‘Education transforms lives.’

英语冠词对中文使用者来说是一个持久挑战,因为中文没有直接对应物。不定冠词’a/an’引入一个非特指的单数名词:’需要一个解决方案。’定冠词’the’指特指的或前文已提到的名词:’报告中提出的那个解决方案失败了。’复数名词或不可数名词在泛指时不加冠词:’教育改变人生。’

  • First mention: ‘A survey was conducted. The survey revealed clear trends.’

    首次提及用’a’:’进行了一项调查。该调查揭示了清晰的趋势。’

  • Shared knowledge: ‘The government’ (within a country) or ‘the environment’.

    共享知识用’the’,如’政府’或’环境’。’

  • Generalisations: ‘Children need playtime’ (all children).

    泛称复数不加冠词:’孩子需要玩耍时间’。’

A useful rule: if you can say ‘one of many’ use ‘a’; if you can say ‘this one in particular’ use ‘the’. Practice by reading academic texts and underlining every article, then explaining why it was chosen. This habit rapidly improves accuracy.

一个实用规则:如果你能在心里说’众多中的一个’,就用’a’;如果你能说’特指这一个’,就用’the’。通过阅读学术文章并给每个冠词划线、解释其存在理由来练习。这种习惯能快速提升准确性。

8. Comparatives and Superlatives: Degrees of Comparison | 比较级与最高级:比较的程度

Ielts Writing Task 1 often requires comparing data, so comparatives and superlatives are vital. Comparatives use ‘-er’ for short adjectives or ‘more’ for longer ones: ‘higher’, ‘more efficient’. Superlatives use ‘-est’ or ‘most’: ‘highest’, ‘most efficient’. Never double up: ‘more higher’ and ‘most highest’ are errors.

雅思写作任务一经常需要比较数据,因此比较级和最高级至关重要。比较级对短形容词用’-er’,对较长形容词用’more’:’higher’、’more efficient’。最高级用’-est’或’most’:’highest’、’most efficient’。绝不可重复使用:’more higher’和’most highest’都是错误。

X is significantly higher than Y.
X accounts for the largest proportion.
The figure for X is three times as large as that for Y.

To achieve band 7 or above, use modifiers to make comparisons precise: ‘slightly higher’, ‘substantially lower’, ‘marginally better’, ‘far more expensive’. Avoid vague statements like ‘X is a bit higher than Y’ in formal writing; choose a more academic modifier.

要获得7分或以上,使用修饰语使比较更精确:’略高’、’大幅降低’、’稍好一些’、’昂贵得多’。避免在正式写作中出现’X比Y高一点’这类模糊表述;选择更学术的修饰语。

9. Prepositions and Particles: Small Words, Big Impact | 介词与小品词:小词大用

Prepositions show relationships in time, place, and direction: ‘at 5 o’clock’, ‘in 2021’, ‘on Monday’, ‘at home’, ‘in the city’, ‘on the coast’. Particle verbs — also called phrasal verbs — combine a verb with a preposition or adverb to create new meanings: ‘carry out’ (conduct), ‘point out’ (mention), ‘set up’ (establish).

介词表示时间、地点和方向关系:’在五点钟’、’在2021年’、’在星期一’、’在家’、’在城市里’、’在海岸边’。小品词动词,也称短语动词,是动词与介词或副词的组合,产生新的含义:’carry out’(实施)、’point out’(指出)、’set up’(建立)。

  • Time: ‘at’ for specific points, ‘in’ for months and years, ‘on’ for days and dates.

    时间:’at’用于具体时刻,’in’用于月份和年份,’on’用于星期和日期。

  • Place: ‘at’ for points, ‘in’ for enclosed spaces, ‘on’ for surfaces.

    地点:’at’用于点,’in’用于封闭空间,’on’用于表面。

  • Academic collocations: ‘according to’, ‘in terms of’, ‘with regard to’, ‘as a result of’.

    学术搭配:’according to’(根据)、’in terms of’(就……而言)、’with regard to’(关于)、’as a result of’(由于)。

Prepositions are highly idiomatic, so rote memorisation of collocations is often more effective than grammar rules. Maintain a personal error log: every time you misuse a preposition, write the correct phrase in a notebook and review it weekly.

介词高度依赖习惯用法,因此搭配的死记硬背往往比语法规则更有效。建立个人错误日志:每次误用介词,就在笔记本上写下正确短语,并每周复习。

10. Common Errors: Chinese Students’ Pitfalls | 常见错误:中国学生的陷阱

Certain grammar mistakes appear repeatedly among Chinese IELTS candidates. Recognising these patterns is half the battle. The most common errors involve missing articles, incorrect verb forms after modals, confusion between ‘since’ and ‘for’, misuse of ‘although’ with ‘but’, and incorrect word order in questions.

某些语法错误在中国雅思考生中反复出现。识别这些模式等于成功了一半。最常见的错误包括:遗漏冠词、情态动词后的动词形式错误、混淆’since’和’for’、将’although’与’but’连用,以及疑问句语序错误。

Error

Correction

‘Although the price is high, but people still buy it.’
‘虽然价格高,但人们仍然购买。’
‘Although the price is high, people still buy it.’
‘虽然价格高,人们仍然购买。’
‘I have lived here since three years.’
‘我在这里住了三年。’
‘I have lived here for three years.’
‘我在这里住了三年。’
‘She can sings well.’
‘她唱歌唱得好。’
‘She can sing well.’
‘她唱歌唱得好。’
‘Government should take action.’
‘政府应采取行动。’
‘The government should take action.’
‘政府应采取行动。’

Another frequent issue is the subject-verb agreement after ‘a number of’ versus ‘the number of’. ‘A number of factors are involved’ uses a plural verb; ‘The number of cars is increasing’ uses a singular verb because the focus is on the figure.

另一个常见问题是’a number of’与’the number of’后面的主谓一致。’A number of factors are involved’(许多因素涉及其中)用复数动词;’The number of cars is increasing’(汽车的数量在增加)用单数动词,因为焦点在数字本身。

11. Punctuation and Cohesion: Connecting Ideas | 标点与衔接:串联思想

Punctuation is not cosmetic; it signals logical relationships. A period separates complete thoughts. A comma after an introductory clause improves readability: ‘In 2020, the rate dropped sharply.’ A semicolon links two related independent clauses without a conjunction: ‘The first method is cheap; the second is more effective.’

标点不是装饰;它标志着逻辑关系。句号分隔完整的思想。引言从句后的逗号提高可读性:’2020年,比率急剧下降。’分号无需连词即可连接两个相关的独立分句:’第一种方法便宜;第二种更有效。’

Cohesive devices such as ‘however’, ‘therefore’, ‘moreover’, ‘for example’, and ‘in contrast’ glue your ideas together. But cohesion does not mean starting every sentence with a connector. Varied referencing — using demonstratives like ‘this’ and such’ as well as synonyms — creates natural flow.

‘however’、’therefore’、’moreover’、’for example’和’in contrast’等衔接手段将你的想法粘合在一起。但衔接并不意味着每句话都以连接词开头。多样化的指代策略,如使用’this’、’such’等指示词以及同义词替换,能创造自然的行文流畅感。

‘The government introduced stricter rules. This move was widely supported.’
‘政府出台了更严格的规定。此举得到广泛支持。’

Notice how ‘This move’ avoids repeating ‘rules’ while linking the two sentences. Mastering these referencing patterns makes your writing feel cohesive without being mechanical.

注意’This move’如何避免重复’rules’,同时将两句话连接起来。掌握这些指代模式能让你的写作富有连贯性而不显机械。

12. Grammar for IELTS Writing and Speaking: Band 7+ Strategies | 雅思写作口语中的语法:7分+策略

To reach band 7, the IELTS band descriptors for writing require ‘a variety of complex structures’ with ‘frequent error-free sentences’. For speaking, band 7 demands ‘some frequent, flexible use of complex structures’ and ‘good control of grammar’. This means you must deliberately use complex sentences, not just simple ones.

要达到7分,雅思写作评分标准要求’使用多种复杂结构’并’频繁出现无错句子’。口语7分则要求’偶尔灵活使用复杂结构’且’语法控制良好’。这意味着你必须有意识地使用复杂句,而不仅仅是简单句。

  • In Writing Task 2, open with a complex sentence that includes a relative clause: ‘Although many believe that technology isolates people, it also creates new forms of community, which were unimaginable a decade ago.’

    在写作任务二中,用包含定语从句的复合句开头:’尽管许多人认为科技使人孤立,但它也创造了十年前难以想象的新社区形式。’

  • In Speaking Part 3, use conditionals and modals to discuss hypotheticals: ‘If governments invested more in public transport, congestion would probably decrease.’

    在口语第三部分,用条件句和情态动词讨论假设情景:’如果政府增加公共交通投入,拥堵可能会减少。’

  • Embed appositives and participle phrases: ‘Renewable energy, a rapidly growing sector, is transforming the power grid.’

    嵌入同位语和分词短语:’可再生能源,一个快速增长的行业,正在改变电网。’

Finally, remember that grammar accuracy is as important as grammatical range. A short, flawless sentence is far better than a long, error-ridden one. Practise writing under timed conditions, then review your grammar from an examiner’s perspective. Over time, complex structures will become automatic, and your band score will follow.

最后,请记住语法准确性同语法多样性一样重要。一个简短无错误的句子远胜于一个冗长却错误百出的句子。在计时条件下练习写作,然后从考官视角检查你的语法。假以时日,复杂结构将成为你的本能反应,你的分数也会随之提升。
