📚 IGCSE Physics: Magnetism and Electromagnetism Essentials | IGCSE
This article summarises the core ideas of magnetism and electromagnetism for the Edexcel IGCSE Physics syllabus. You will need to explain concepts clearly, draw simple field diagrams, and apply the right-hand rules in exam questions.
1. Properties of Magnets |
Every magnet has two poles: a north pole (N) and a south pole (S). Magnetic force is strongest at the poles. Like poles repel each other, while unlike poles attract each other. A freely suspended bar magnet will always come to rest pointing roughly north-south because the Earth behaves like a giant magnet.
Magnetic materials are attracted to magnets, but they do not repel. The ends of a magnet are often marked N and S. If a magnet is broken in half, each piece becomes a complete magnet with its own N pole and S pole.
2. Magnetic Fields and Field Lines |
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where another magnet or magnetic material experiences a magnetic force. Magnetic field lines are drawn from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet. Inside the magnet they go from S to N.
Rules for field lines:
- Field lines never cross each other.
- The closer the lines, the stronger the magnetic field.
- Arrows show the direction a free north pole would move.
Near the poles, field lines are crowded together, so the field is strongest there. In plotting compass tests, the needle of the compass lines up along the magnetic field direction.
3. Magnetic Materials and Magnetisation |
The common magnetic materials are iron, steel, cobalt and nickel. Iron and steel are the most important in IGCSE questions. Soft iron magnetises easily and loses its magnetism quickly when removed from a strong field. Steel is harder to magnetise but keeps its magnetism for longer.
| Easy to magnetise?
| Retains magnetism?
To make a magnet, you can stroke a steel bar with a magnet in one direction, or place the material inside a solenoid carrying a direct current. Demagnetisation can be done by heating, hammering, or placing the magnet in a solenoid carrying an alternating current and slowly withdrawing it.
4. Magnetic Effect of a Current |
When an electric current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is produced around the wire. The field lines are concentric circles centred on the wire. The direction of the field depends on the direction of the current.
Use the right-hand grip rule: point the thumb of your right hand in the direction of conventional current, and your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field lines.
A solenoid is a long coil of wire. Its magnetic field is similar to that of a bar magnet. Inside the solenoid the field is strong and almost uniform; outside it is like the field around a bar magnet.
Field strength increases with current, number of turns per metre, or a soft iron core inside the coil.
5. Electromagnets and Applications |
An electromagnet is made by wrapping a solenoid around a soft iron core. Its main advantage over a permanent magnet is that it can be switched on and off. Its strength can also be controlled by changing the current or the number of turns.
Applications include the electric bell, the circuit breaker, and the electromagnetic crane used in scrapyards. In each case, the magnet attracts a piece of iron or steel when switched on, and releases it when the current is switched off.
In exams, you may be asked to explain how an electric bell works. The key steps are: the switch is pressed, current flows, the electromagnet attracts the hammer, the hammer strikes the bell, the circuit breaks, and the spring returns the contact, repeating the cycle.
6. The Motor Effect |
When a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force. This is called the motor effect. The direction of the force can be found using Fleming’s left-hand rule.
- First finger: direction of the magnetic field, N to S. 食指:磁场方向,从 N 到 S。
- Second finger: direction of conventional current.
- Thumb: direction of the force or motion.
The size of the force increases if the magnetic flux density increases, if the current increases, or if the length of wire in the field increases. For a wire at right angles to the field:
F = B I l
An electric motor uses this effect. A coil of wire in a magnetic field experiences a pair of forces that rotate the coil. A split-ring commutator reverses the current every half turn so the rotation continues in the same direction.
7. Electromagnetic Induction |
Electromagnetic induction happens when a conductor cuts magnetic field lines, or when the magnetic field through a coil changes. This induces an electromotive force (e.m.f.) across the conductor. If the circuit is complete, an induced current flows.
The size of the induced e.m.f. can be increased by moving the magnet faster, using a stronger magnet, or increasing the number of turns on the coil.
The direction of the induced current always opposes the change that caused it. This is Lenz’s law. If a north pole approaches a coil, the coil creates its own north pole to repel it.
Faraday’s law states that the induced e.m.f. is proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.
Induced e.m.f. ∝ rate of change of magnetic flux linkage
8. The Generator Principle |
A generator converts kinetic energy into electrical energy. The simplest generator is a coil rotating in a magnetic field. As the coil rotates, the magnetic flux through it changes continuously, so an alternating e.m.f. is induced.
In an AC generator, the coil is connected to slip rings and carbon brushes. Each half-turn, the current in the external circuit changes direction, so the output is alternating current.
In a DC generator, a split-ring commutator is used instead of slip rings. The commutator swaps the connections every half-turn, so the direction of current in the external circuit stays the same.
9. Alternating Current and Direct Current |
Direct current (DC) flows in one direction only. Cells and batteries supply direct current. Alternating current (AC) reverses its direction many times per second. Mains electricity in the UK is AC with a frequency of 50 Hz.
An oscilloscope trace shows AC as a sinusoidal wave, while DC appears as a horizontal straight line. A frequency of 50 Hz means the current completes 50 full cycles every second.
AC is easier to generate and its voltage can be changed easily using transformers. For these reasons, mains electricity uses AC rather than DC.
10. Transformers | 变压器
A transformer changes the voltage of an alternating current supply. It has two coils wound on a soft iron core. The primary coil is connected to the AC input, and the secondary coil is connected to the output. It only works with alternating current.
For an ideal transformer:
In an ideal transformer, no power is lost, so VₚIₚ = VₛIₛ. A step-up transformer has more turns on the secondary coil; a step-down transformer has fewer turns on the secondary coil.
Energy losses in real transformers are reduced by using a laminated soft iron core to reduce eddy currents, and by using thick low-resistance copper wires to reduce heating losses.
