📚 Percentage Uncertainty: Calculation & Practical Applications |

In A-Level Physics, measurements are never perfect. Every reading carries an uncertainty, and knowing how to quantify and combine these uncertainties is a core skill assessed by CIE. Among all forms of uncertainty, the percentage uncertainty is especially powerful: it allows you to compare, propagate, and ultimately judge the reliability of your final result.

1. Absolute, Fractional, and Percentage Uncertainty |

Before we dive into percentage uncertainty, let us clarify the three fundamental ways of expressing uncertainty. The absolute uncertainty is the actual range in which the true value lies, often denoted as Δx. The fractional uncertainty is the ratio of the absolute uncertainty to the measured value, Δx/x. The percentage uncertainty is simply the fractional uncertainty multiplied by 100%.

Percentage Uncertainty = (Absolute Uncertainty ÷ Measured Value) × 100%

For example, if you measure a length as 25.0 cm with a ruler graduated in millimetres, the absolute uncertainty is typically ±0.1 cm. The fractional uncertainty is 0.1/25.0 = 0.004, and the percentage uncertainty is 0.4%. This single number tells you instantly that the measurement is quite precise relative to its size.

2. Estimating Absolute Uncertainty from Instruments |

For analogue instruments such as rulers, protractors, and analogue ammeters, the absolute uncertainty is usually taken as half the smallest division. For a ruler with millimetre divisions, this gives ±0.5 mm. For digital instruments such as a digital stopwatch or a digital multimeter, the absolute uncertainty is usually the smallest digit displayed, or the value stated in the manufacturer’s specification, whichever is larger.

It is important to remember that human reaction time adds uncertainty to timing measurements. When using a stopwatch, a common estimate for reaction error is ±0.1 s to ±0.2 s per reading. In oscillation experiments, measuring the time for 20 oscillations rather than one reduces the percentage uncertainty in the period, because the absolute timing uncertainty is spread over more oscillations.

3. Percentage Uncertainty for Repeated Measurements |

When you repeat a measurement multiple times, the absolute uncertainty can be estimated as half the range of the readings. For example, if you measure the diameter of a wire five times and obtain values from 0.52 mm to 0.58 mm, the range is 0.06 mm and the absolute uncertainty is ±0.03 mm. The percentage uncertainty is then 0.03/0.55 × 100% ≈ 5.5%, where 0.55 mm is the mean value.

Alternatively, the absolute uncertainty may be calculated using the standard deviation of the mean, but at A-Level the half-range method is generally accepted and much quicker. The key is to be consistent and to state clearly which method you have used in your write-up.

4. Adding and Subtracting Quantities |

When quantities are added or subtracted, the absolute uncertainties add. There is no cancellation of uncertainties, even when you are subtracting two nearly equal quantities. For example, if A = 50.0 ± 0.2 cm and B = 30.0 ± 0.2 cm, then A + B = 80.0 ± 0.4 cm and A – B = 20.0 ± 0.4 cm. Note that in both cases the absolute uncertainty is the sum of the individual absolute uncertainties.

例如,若A = 50.0 ± 0.2 cm,B = 30.0 ± 0.2 cm,则A + B = 80.0 ± 0.4 cm,A – B = 20.0 ± 0.4 cm。

However, the percentage uncertainty of a difference can be very large when the two quantities are close in value. This is why measuring the extension of a spring by subtracting the original length from the stretched length can lead to a large percentage uncertainty if the extension is small compared to the lengths themselves.

5. Multiplying and Dividing: Percentage Uncertainties Add |

This is the most important rule for percentage uncertainty in A-Level physics. When two measured quantities are multiplied or divided, their percentage uncertainties are added to give the percentage uncertainty of the result. This rule also extends to combinations of multiplications and divisions: simply sum the percentage uncertainties of all the individual quantities involved.

For instance, to find the density of a metal block, you measure its mass m = 200.0 ± 0.5 g and its volume V = 50.0 ± 0.5 cm³. The percentage uncertainty in mass is 0.5/200 × 100% = 0.25%. The percentage uncertainty in volume is 0.5/50 × 100% = 1.0%. Therefore the percentage uncertainty in density = m/V is 0.25% + 1.0% = 1.25%.

If Z = A × B or Z = A ÷ B, then %ΔZ = %ΔA + %ΔB

6. Powers and Roots: Multiply the Percentage Uncertainty |

When a quantity is raised to a power, the percentage uncertainty is multiplied by that power. For example, the volume of a sphere is V = (4/3)πr³. If the radius r has a percentage uncertainty of 2%, then the volume has a percentage uncertainty of 3 × 2% = 6%. Similarly, for a square root, such as T = 2π√(l/g), the percentage uncertainty in T is half the percentage uncertainty in l.

If Z = Aⁿ, then %ΔZ = n × %ΔA

This rule is particularly common in CIE practical papers, where you may be asked to plot a graph of T² against l to determine g from the gradient. When T is squared, its percentage uncertainty doubles; when you take a square root, it halves. Recognising these relationships quickly in the exam saves time and prevents careless errors.

7. Converting Between Absolute and Percentage Uncertainty |

You will frequently need to convert between absolute and percentage uncertainties. To convert from absolute to percentage, divide by the measured value and multiply by 100%. To convert back from percentage to absolute, multiply the measured value by the percentage and divide by 100%. These conversions are essential when different quantities in a formula are quoted in different forms.

Consider the formula R = V/I. Suppose V = 6.0 ± 0.1 V and I = 2.00 ± 0.02 A. The percentage uncertainties are 0.1/6.0 × 100% ≈ 1.7% and 0.02/2.00 × 100% = 1.0% respectively. The percentage uncertainty in R is 2.7%. To find the absolute uncertainty in R, first calculate R = 6.0/2.00 = 3.0 Ω, then ΔR = 3.0 × 2.7/100 ≈ 0.08 Ω. The result is therefore R = 3.0 ± 0.1 Ω.

考虑公式R = V/I。假设V = 6.0 ± 0.1 V,I = 2.00 ± 0.02 A。百分不确定度分别为0.1/6.0 × 100% ≈ 1.7%和0.02/2.00 × 100% = 1.0%。R的百分不确定度为2.7%。为求R的绝对不确定度,先计算R = 6.0/2.00 = 3.0 Ω,则ΔR = 3.0 × 2.7/100 ≈ 0.08 Ω。因此结果为R = 3.0 ± 0.1 Ω。

8. Graphical Analysis and Error Bars |

In CIE practical examinations, you are often required to plot a graph with error bars and draw the line of best fit. The gradient of the best-fit line gives the central value, while the steepest and shallowest acceptable lines give the maximum and minimum gradients. The uncertainty in the gradient is half the difference between these two extreme gradients.

Percentage uncertainty in the gradient is then calculated as the absolute uncertainty in the gradient divided by the gradient, multiplied by 100%. The same method applies to the intercept: the uncertainty in the intercept is half the range between the maximum and minimum intercepts from the extreme lines. Mastery of this graphical technique is often worth several marks in the practical paper.

9. Reducing Percentage Uncertainty: Experimental Strategies |

There are several strategies to reduce percentage uncertainty in an experiment. Increasing the size of the measured quantity is the most direct approach. For example, measuring the thickness of 50 sheets of paper and dividing by 50 gives a much smaller percentage uncertainty than measuring one sheet directly. This is known as the multiple measurement technique.

Choosing a more precise instrument also helps. A micrometre screw gauge measures to ±0.01 mm, whereas a ruler measures to ±0.5 mm. For measuring the diameter of a wire, using a micrometer is essential to keep the percentage uncertainty acceptably low. Additionally, taking repeated readings and using the mean value reduces the effect of random errors.

10. Identifying the Dominant Uncertainty |

In a multi-step calculation, one measurement often dominates the total percentage uncertainty. Identifying the dominant uncertainty is a valuable skill, both for answering exam questions and for improving experimental design. If one quantity contributes 5% while all others contribute less than 0.5%, there is little point in refining the others; you should focus your efforts on the dominant term.

For example, in an experiment to measure the Young modulus of a wire, the extension might be very small and therefore carry a large percentage uncertainty. In that case, you would increase the load or use a more sensitive method of measuring extension, such as an optical lever or a travelling microscope, to reduce the overall uncertainty of the experiment.

11. Common Exam Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见考试陷阱与规避方法

One common mistake is adding absolute uncertainties when the formula involves multiplication and division. Remember that absolute uncertainties add only for addition and subtraction; for multiplication and division, it is the percentage uncertainties that add. Mixing these rules leads to incorrect final answers and lost marks in the exam.

Another frequent error is forgetting to double the percentage uncertainty of a squared quantity. For instance, in the formula g = 4π²l/T², the percentage uncertainty in g includes twice the percentage uncertainty in T. Also, remember that constants such as π and 4 have no uncertainty; do not include them in your calculations.

12. Worked Example: Full Uncertainty Analysis |

Let us work through a complete example. A student measures the period T of a pendulum using a stopwatch with ±0.1 s precision. She measures the time for 20 oscillations as 28.4 s. The time for one oscillation is T = 28.4/20 = 1.42 s. The percentage uncertainty in the total time is 0.1/28.4 × 100% ≈ 0.35%, and this is also the percentage uncertainty in T.

She also measures the length of the pendulum as l = 50.0 ± 0.2 cm. The percentage uncertainty in l is 0.2/50 × 100% = 0.40%. Using g = 4π²l/T², the percentage uncertainty in g is 0.40% + 2 × 0.35% = 1.10%. Calculating g = 4π²(0.500)/(1.42)² ≈ 9.78 m/s². The absolute uncertainty is 9.78 × 1.10/100 ≈ 0.11 m/s². The final answer is therefore g = 9.78 ± 0.11 m/s².

Percentage uncertainty is not just a mathematical exercise; it is the language scientists use to express confidence in their measurements. Mastering its calculation and application will serve you well in the CIE practical paper, in data analysis questions, and in your future studies of physics. Keep practising with past paper questions, and always ask yourself: which quantity carries the largest percentage uncertainty, and how can I reduce it?
