📚 TOEFL Reading: Top 10 Question Types Explained and Practiced | 托福阅读十大题型精讲精练
The TOEFL Reading section consists of three to four academic passages, each followed by approximately ten questions. You have 54 to 72 minutes to complete the entire section. The most important fact to understand is that every single question you will see belongs to one of ten predictable categories. Once you master the logic of each type, your reading score will rise quickly and reliably.
托福阅读部分包含三到四篇学术文章,每篇附带大约十道题目。你有54到72分钟来完成整个部分。最重要的一点是:你遇到的每道题都属于十种可预测的题型之一。一旦掌握了每种题型的底层逻辑,你的阅读分数就会快速且稳定地提升。
Before we dive into each type, here is an overview of how the ten types are distributed in a typical passage. Vocabulary and factual information questions appear most often, while summary and table questions carry the most points.
在深入每种题型之前,先看一个关于十种题型在典型文章中分布情况的概览。词汇题和事实信息题出现频率最高,而小结题和表格题分值最高。

1. Vocabulary Questions | 词汇题
Vocabulary questions ask you to identify the meaning of a single word or phrase as it is used in the passage. These words are often academic or low-frequency terms drawn directly from the text. The question stem typically reads: “The word ‘X’ in the passage is closest in meaning to…”
词汇题要求你判断某一单词或短语在文中的含义。这些词通常是直接取自原文的学术词或低频词。题干通常写作:”文中’X’一词的意思最接近于…”
Your best strategy is not to rely on memorizing word lists alone. Instead, read at least one full sentence before and after the target word, determine whether the word functions as a noun, verb, or adjective, and look for context clues such as definitions, examples, contrasts, and cause-and-effect relations. The correct answer is almost always a synonym that fits the same part of speech.
最佳策略不是单纯依赖背单词表。相反,请阅读目标词前后至少各一个完整的句子,判断该词在句中是名词、动词还是形容词,并寻找定义、举例、对比或因果等语境线索。正确答案几乎总是与原文词性相同的同义词。
Consider a sampled question: “The word ‘prevailing’ in the passage is closest in meaning to (A) dominant (B) weak (C) ancient (D) temporary.” If the text says “the prevailing winds that dominate the region,” the word “dominate” already reveals the answer: A.
看一道模拟题:”文中’prevailing’一词最接近的意思是 (A) dominant (B) weak (C) ancient (D) temporary。” 如果原文写道 “the prevailing winds that dominate the region”,”dominate”一词已经暗示了答案,即 A。
2. Reference Questions | 指代题
Reference questions ask you to identify what a highlighted pronoun or noun phrase refers to in the passage. The most commonly tested pronouns are it, they, this, that, these, those, and such. The question stem usually reads: “The word ‘X’ in the passage refers to…”
指代题要求你判断文中高亮的代词或名词短语所指代的对象。最常见的考点是 it、they、this、that、these、those 和 such 等代词。题干通常写作:”文中’X’一词指的是…”
The key rule is simple: a pronoun almost always points backward to the nearest logical noun phrase that agrees in number and gender. Do not jump across paragraphs, and do not choose a noun that appears later in the same sentence. In the exam interface, you can click on the highlighted word to view the surrounding sentences more clearly; take advantage of this feature.
关键规则很简单:代词几乎总是指向离它最近的、单复数一致且语义通顺的名词短语。不要跨段落去寻找,也不要选择同句中出现在代词之后的单词。在考试界面中,你可以点击高亮词来更清晰地查看其前后句子;请充分利用这一功能。
When you test each option, mentally replace the pronoun with that option and read the sentence again. If the replacement produces a grammatical and logical sentence, it is highly likely to be the correct answer.
在检验每个选项时,尝试用该选项替换代词,然后重新朗读原句。如果替换后的句子语法正确且逻辑通顺,那它就很可能是正确答案。
3. Sentence Simplification Questions | 句子简化题
Sentence simplification questions highlight one long, complex sentence in the passage. You must choose the single answer that best preserves the essential meaning of the highlighted sentence without changing the logical relationships between ideas. The four options are all shorter versions of the original sentence.
句子简化题会高亮文中的一个长难句。你需要选出最能忠实保留原句核心含义、同时不改变观点间逻辑关系的选项。四个选项都是对原句的简化改写。
Begin by breaking the sentence into its core: subject + verb + main idea. Then identify subordinate clauses that express cause, contrast, condition, or purpose. Eliminate any option that drops the main subject, alters the direction of a cause-and-effect relationship, or inserts information that the original sentence does not contain. Remember that the correct option needs to keep the same overall structure of logic, not just the same topic.
首先把句子拆解成核心:主语 + 谓语 + 主要信息。然后识别表达因果、转折、条件或目的等关系的从句。排除任何丢失主要主语、颠倒因果关系方向、或添加原文中不存在信息的选项。请记住,正确选项必须保留与原句相同的整体逻辑结构,而不仅仅是相同的主题。
A common trap is an option that is grammatically correct and thematically related, but that changes a cause-effect pair into a simple sequence of events. Always ask: “Does this option preserve the exact logical relationship expressed by the original sentence?”
一个常见的陷阱是:某个选项语法正确、主题相关,但它把因果关系改成了单纯的先后并列。务必自问:”这个选项是否保留了原句所表达的精确逻辑关系?”
4. Insert Text Questions | 插入文本题
Insert text questions present a new sentence and ask where it best fits among four black squares placed within a paragraph. The inserted sentence usually contains a reference word, a conjunction, or a logical link that connects it to the surrounding sentences. The question stem reads: “Look at the four squares [■] that indicate where the following sentence could be added to the passage.”
插入文本题会给出一个新句子,要求你在段落中的四个黑色方块 ■ 中选出最佳插入位置。待插入的句子通常含有指代词、连词或与前后文衔接的逻辑连接。题干写作:”请看四个方块 [■],它们标明了下列句子可以添加到文中的位置。”
Look for two signals. First, the pronoun in the new sentence must have a clear antecedent in the sentence that immediately precedes it. Second, the new information should flow naturally into the sentence that follows. If the new sentence begins with “This process,” search for a process described in the preceding sentence. If it begins with “In contrast,” the preceding sentence must present an opposing idea.
请寻找两个信号。第一,新句子中的代词必须能在紧邻的前一句中找到明确的先行词。第二,新信息应能自然引出后一句的内容。如果新句子以 “This process” 开头,请在前一句中寻找被描述的过程;如果它以 “In contrast” 开头,那么前一句必须呈现出相反的观点。
The best way to verify your choice is to read the merged paragraph continuously, from the square before the insertion through the square after it. If the transition feels natural at both the beginning and the end of the inserted sentence, your choice is likely correct. If either boundary feels jarring or illogical, test another square.
验证选择的最佳方法是把合并后的段落从头到尾连贯读一遍,从插入点之前的方块一直读到插入点之后的方块。如果插入句子的首尾衔接都自然顺畅,你的选择就很可能正确。如果任何一端显得突兀或不合逻辑,请尝试其他方块。
5. Factual Information Questions | 事实信息题
Factual information questions are the most common type in TOEFL Reading. They ask you to locate a specific detail that is explicitly stated in the passage. The correct answer is typically a paraphrase of the original text, so do not expect to see identical wording. The question may begin with “According to paragraph 2, which of the following is true about…”
事实信息题是托福阅读中最常见的题型。这类题要求你定位文章中明确陈述的具体细节。正确答案通常是对原文的同义改写,所以不要期待出现完全相同的措辞。题干可能以”根据第二段,下列关于……哪一项是正确的”开头。
Use the question stem to identify the subject and unique keywords such as dates, names, numbers, or technical terms. Scan the passage quickly to locate these keywords, then read the surrounding one to two sentences very carefully. Compare the meaning
