In December 2023 the Department for Education published the final subject content for a new GCSE in British Sign Language, making BSL the first sign language in the UK to be developed as a full GCSE subject. The qualification is designed for schools in England, because Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own qualification frameworks and their own BSL provision.
