📚 The October Exam Window: 12-16 October 2026 |

For a large number of A-Level and IGCSE candidates, the autumn series is not a second chance – it is the main event. The week running from Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October 2026 sits near the start of the October/November examination series, and it is the week in which many students will sit their first, and often their heaviest, papers of the session. This guide explains what the window contains, how to plan the months before it, and how to execute cleanly once you are in the hall.

1. What the October Window Actually Is | 十月考试窗口到底是什么

The October window is a five-day block inside the wider autumn series. Boards publish a separate autumn timetable, and individual papers are spread across roughly six to eight weeks. What makes 12-16 October 2026 distinctive is that it is an early, high-density block: several popular syllabuses place their first written papers here, which means your preparation deadline is effectively mid-October, not late November.

Two very different groups of candidates sit inside this window. The first group are resit candidates who sat the same papers in May/June and are using the autumn series to lift a grade. The second group are students on accelerated or one-year programmes, or on a January-to-October teaching cycle, for whom these are the first attempt. The revision strategy for each group is not the same.

One rule overrides everything else in this article: your own Statement of Entry and your centre’s confirmed timetable are the only authoritative sources. Boards publish timetables, but your school or test centre decides start times, venues and any timetable adjustments for clashing papers. Never plan travel or a family holiday around a date you have not seen on your own entry document.

2. The Five Dates at a Glance |

The window is the full working week of 12-16 October 2026. Most centres run a morning session and an afternoon session on each of these days, but the exact start times are set locally – commonly a 09:00 morning start and a 13:00 or 14:00 afternoon start. Always arrive at least 30 minutes before the published start time.

Date Session What typically happens
Mon 12 Oct 2026 AM / PM Opening papers of the block; heavy weighting on core mathematics and sciences in many centres
Tue 13 Oct 2026 AM / PM Practical-alternative and multiple-choice papers are common; short, fast-turnaround papers
Wed 14 Oct 2026 AM / PM Midweek peak; the highest chance of a morning-and-afternoon double on the same day
Thu 15 Oct 2026 AM / PM Clash-risk day; also the UCAS deadline day for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses
Fri 16 Oct 2026 AM / PM End of the block; long essay-based or structured written papers are frequently placed here

Notice that Thursday 15 October 2026 is both an examination day and, for many applicants, the UCAS equal-consideration deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. If that applies to you, your UCAS submission must be finished well before the window opens, not during it.

3. Which Boards Use This Window |

The autumn series is offered by the international boards. Cambridge International runs an October/November series for a wide range of Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge AS and A Level and Cambridge AICE syllabuses. Pearson Edexcel runs an October series centred on International A Level and International GCSE. Both organisations publish confirmed timetables that you should download in full.

剑桥国际(Cambridge International)为大量 Cambridge IGCSE、O Level、AS 与 A Level、AICE 大纲开设十月/十一月场。

It is important not to confuse the October/November series with the domestic November resit series used by UK boards such as AQA, OCR and Eduqas, which is mainly November GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English Language, and falls later in the year. If you are an international candidate, the October window is almost certainly the international series, not the domestic November one.

Subject availability in the autumn series is narrower than in May/June. Some syllabuses and some components are simply not offered in October. Before you build any revision plan, confirm three things: the syllabus code, the component or paper number, and the session you are entered for. A student who revises Paper 4 while entered for Paper 5 has wasted months.

4. Why This Window Matters Beyond the Grade |

For resit candidates, the autumn series is often the difference between meeting a university condition and losing a place. A conditional offer is a contractual target: if your offer says grade B and you hold a grade C, a strong October paper can convert the place, provided your university permits a resit within the same admissions cycle. Always email the admissions office in writing to confirm their policy first.

For first-attempt candidates on accelerated programmes, the window sets the pace for everything that follows. Papers sat in October produce results in January, which feeds directly into university applications and into decisions about whether to continue with the same subject load. Doing well here buys you options in the spring.

There is also a psychological dimension that examiners never mention. A calm, well-executed first paper in the window makes the remaining papers easier; a chaotic first paper costs you confidence for weeks. The single most valuable thing you can prepare is not the last topic on the syllabus – it is your routine on the morning of 12 October 2026.

5. Building the 16-Week Run-In | 搭建考前 16 周节奏

Counting back from mid-October, sixteen weeks takes you to late June. A four-phase structure works well because it separates learning from drilling, and drilling from rehearsal. Phase 1 rebuilds content. Phase 2 converts content into exam technique. Phase 3 is timed practice under full conditions. Phase 4 is taper and logistics.

Phase Weeks before 12 Oct Main job Output
1 Build 16 to 11 Re-teach every topic from the specification Topic notes and a self-audit sheet
2 Apply 10 to 7 Question-by-question drill by topic Error log with repeat-offence tags
3 Rehearse 6 to 3 Full papers, strict timing, no notes Scored scripts and examiner-style feedback
4 Taper 2 to 0 Light revision, sleep, logistics, no new content Packed bag and a confirmed route

Translate the plan into hours so it is measurable. If you can commit to a daily study block, your total available time is simple arithmetic:

For example, 3 hours per day × 112 days = 336 hours of study time. Now subtract the hours lost to school, travel, sport and rest, and you have the real number. Most students overestimate this figure by 30-40 %, which is exactly why the October window catches people unprepared.

6. Four Weeks Out: The Consolidation Block |

At four weeks out, the goal changes from coverage to precision. You should already have seen every topic once. The job now is to find the specific question types where you lose marks, and to fix them by pattern rather than by rereading notes. Reading notes feels productive and produces almost nothing at this stage.

Build an error log with four columns: question reference, my mistake, the correct method, and a one-line rule I will follow next time. Then count the categories. If one category appears more than three times across two papers, it is a priority, not a detail.

The single most useful number at this stage is your realistic target mark. Work backwards from the grade you need using the published grade thresholds for the previous two autumn series:

If a paper is marked out of 80 and the grade A threshold sits at 56, your target is 56 ÷ 80 × 100 = 70 %. That number changes how you allocate time in the exam: it tells you which questions are negotiable and which are not.

Also fix your timing strategy now, not in the hall. For a structured written paper, allow a reserve and divide what remains:

7. Final Week: Running 12-16 October |

The final week has one governing principle: never study a new topic, and never study late into the night before a paper. Light review of your own notes, your error log and the specification is enough. Your memory performs best when it is rested, and a tired brain makes careless errors in exactly the places where you were strongest.

A repeatable daily template for the window keeps decisions out of the way. Below is a pattern that works for a typical two-paper day.

Time Action
06:45 Wake, hydrate, light breakfast with protein and slow carbohydrate
07:20 15-minute skim of formula sheet or key definitions only
08:15 Arrive at the centre; check seating list and ID
09:00 Morning paper
11:30 Debrief privately for 10 minutes only, then stop; eat and rest
12:30 Short switch to the afternoon subject; do not re-mark the morning paper
14:00 Afternoon paper
17:00 Walk, dinner, then 60-90 minutes on the next day’s first subject
21:30 Screens off; pack bag and lay out ID and stationery

Notice the deliberate stop after each paper. Post-mortems beyond ten minutes are pure anxiety generation. You cannot change the paper you have written, and the only paper that still matters is the next one.

8. Exam-Day Logistics and Rules |

Arrive early, and arrive with the correct documents: photographic ID, your Statement of Entry, and a clear pencil case if your centre requires one. Mobile phones must be switched off and surrendered or left outside the examination room entirely – even a phone that rings inside a bag can trigger a malpractice investigation, and a device found on your person is treated far more seriously than a forgotten note.

Check the specific permitted equipment for each paper. Most mathematics and science papers allow a scientific calculator but not one with symbolic algebra, and some papers forbid calculators and formula sheets altogether. For essays, write in black or blue ink, use the margins for planning, and always number your answers to match the question paper.

If a paper goes badly, do not leave early and do not spend the remaining time recalculating your score. Use every minute: re-read the questions you found hardest, check units and significant figures, and verify that you have answered the required number of questions rather than the number you wanted to answer.

9. Managing Pressure in the Window |

Sleep is the highest-leverage variable in the whole period. Teenagers need roughly 8-10 hours; most candidates in exam weeks get 6 and then wonder why they misread questions. Set a fixed lights-out time from the start of Phase 3 and treat it as non-negotiable
