📚 UK Border and Customs Q&A: Key Questions to Prepare Before Travel |

Flying to the UK for a new school year is exciting, but the last ten metres of the journey – from the aircraft door to the arrivals hall – can feel the most nerve-wracking part of the whole trip. A UK Border Force officer will ask you a handful of short questions, and a customs officer may ask a few more. None of these questions are designed to trick you. They exist to confirm three things: that you are the person your visa says you are, that your story matches your paperwork, and that you are not carrying anything you should not be. This guide converts those questions into a preparation checklist you can rehearse before you fly.

1. Why Border Preparation Matters |

The border interview is a short, structured verification exercise. Officers typically have well under two minutes with each arriving passenger, and during that time they compare three sources of information: what you say, what your documents show, and what the system already holds about you – your visa application, your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), and your previous travel history. A mismatch between these three is the single biggest trigger for secondary questioning. Preparing does not mean memorising a script. It means knowing your own facts – course title, university city, accommodation address, funding source – well enough to state them in clear English without hesitation.

In practice, the difference is visible. Students who answer fluently and consistently are waved through in seconds. Students who hesitate, contradict their own paperwork, or give a different course name from the one on their CAS are usually asked to step aside, where a delay of one to three hours is common and a missed onward connection is a real risk.

2. Documents Checklist Before You Fly |

Keep every document below in your hand luggage, never in the checked bag. Officers cannot verify a document that is in the hold. Build both a paper folder and a digital folder on your phone; a dead battery should never be the reason you cannot prove where you are staying.

  • Passport valid for the whole stay, ideally with at least six months remaining, plus your visa vignette or the eVisa linked to your UKVI account – 护照有效期覆盖整个停留期,最好还剩至少六个月,外加签证贴纸或与 UKVI 账户关联的 eVisa
  • Share code or eVisa reference so an officer can check your digital immigration status online – 共享码(share code)或 eVisa 编号,便于官员在线核查你的电子移民身份
  • CAS statement or university offer letter, printed – CAS
  • Accommodation confirmation: hall of residence contract, tenancy agreement or host address with full postcode –
  • Evidence of funds: bank statements, scholarship letter or sponsor letter –
  • Return or onward ticket, or a clear travel plan –
  • ATAS clearance certificate if your course requires it – 如课程需要,附 ATAS 许可证明
  • TB test certificate if you are travelling from a listed country –
  • Travel and health insurance documents –
  • Prescription letter or doctor’s note for any medicine you carry –
  • Photocopies of everything above, stored separately from the originals –

Visa-free visitors should also check whether they need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before boarding; the scheme has been extended to more nationalities over time, so confirm your own situation on gov.uk rather than relying on last year’s advice.

3. Core Question One: Purpose of Visit |

“What is the purpose of your visit?” is almost always the opening question. Answer it in one clean sentence that names your status, your course and your institution: “I am starting a three-year BSc in Economics at the University of Manchester.” Do not answer “I am just visiting” if you hold a Student visa, and do not answer “holiday” if you are entering to study. The officer is checking that your stated purpose matches the visa category in your passport.

“What is the purpose of your visit?”(你来英国的目的是什么?) I am starting a three-year BSc in Economics at the University of Manchester.”

Follow-up versions of the same question include “Are you here on business or for pleasure?”, “Why did you choose the UK?” and “Have you been to the UK before?” Keep the answers factual and short. If you have studied in the UK before, say so plainly – this is helpful information, not a problem, provided your new course and new visa are consistent with it.

同一问题的追问形式还有 “Are you here on business or for pleasure?”、”Why did you choose the UK?” 以及 “Have you been to the UK before?”。

4. Core Question Two: Length of Stay and Return Plans |

“How long do you intend to stay?” and “When are you leaving?” test whether you understand the limits of your permission. For a Student visa, the honest and correct answer is the length of your course plus any additional period granted on your eVisa. Say the end date you actually hold, not an optimistic guess.

“How long do you intend to stay?”(你打算停留多久?)和 “When are you leaving?”

This is also the point where many applicants accidentally create doubt. Saying “I hope to stay and work in the UK forever” while entering on a Student visa contradicts the terms of that visa. If you genuinely plan to apply for a Graduate visa after your degree, phrase it accurately: “My visa runs until September 2028; after that I may apply for the Graduate route if I meet the requirements.”

持学生签证入境时说 “I hope to stay and work in the UK forever”,与该签证的条款相矛盾。 My visa runs until September 2028; after that I may apply for the Graduate route if I meet the requirements.”

If you have no fixed return ticket because your plans depend on term dates, say that plainly and offer the supporting evidence – a term calendar or a flight booking you have already made for the vacation period.

5. Core Question Three: Accommodation and Funds |

“Where will you be staying?” is a factual question with a factual answer. Give the full address, including the postcode, and name the type of accommodation: “I am staying in Owens Park Hall of Residence, 315 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, M14 6HR.” If you are staying with a relative for the first week before moving into halls, say both addresses in order.

“Where will you be staying?”(你会住在哪里?) I am staying in Owens Park Hall of Residence, 315 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, M14 6HR.”

“Who is paying for your studies?” and “How much money do you have available?” are the financial follow-ups. The strongest answer names the source and the mechanism: “My parents are funding my studies. Their bank statements and a sponsor letter are in this folder.” You are not expected to produce a precise figure on the spot, but you are expected to know roughly where the money comes from and to be able to hand over the evidence.

“Who is paying for your studies?”(谁为你的学业出资?)和 “How much money do you have available?”(你手头有多少资金?) My parents are funding my studies. Their bank statements and a sponsor letter are in this folder.”

Do not exaggerate. Claiming to have far more money than your documents show, or far less, both create inconsistency with the financial evidence you submitted with your visa application.

6. Student Route Specifics: Course and University |

Student Route entrants face an extra cluster of questions, all of which should be answerable in one sentence each.

  • “What are you going to study?” – name the exact course title as it appears on your CAS – “你打算学什么?”——说出 CAS 上的确切课程名称
  • “Which university or college?” – name the institution and the city, and know roughly how you will travel there from the airport – “哪所大学或学院?”——说出校名和所在城市,并大致知道如何从机场前往
  • “Why did you choose this course?” – one genuine reason is enough; avoid vague answers such as “because it is famous” – “为什么选这门课?”——一个真实理由即可,避免 “because it is famous” 这类空泛回答
  • “What are your plans after graduation?” – describe intentions that fit your visa category – “毕业后有什么打算?”——描述与你的签证类别相符的打算
  • “Do you intend to work while you are here?” – know your legal limit: usually 20 hours per week in term time for degree-level students and 10 hours for students below degree level, with full-time work permitted in vacations only if your visa allows it – “你打算在这里工作吗?”——清楚你的法定上限:学位课程学生学期内通常每周 20 小时,学位以下课程为 10 小时,只有在签证允许的情况下假期才可全职工作

Never say you intend to work full time on a Student visa, and never say you intend to work in a job your visa prohibits, such as professional sport or self-employment. A casual remark can be recorded and used in a future application.

7. Tone, Language and Body Language |

You do not need a British accent, but you do need clarity. Use short sentences, speak slightly more slowly than usual, and look at the officer rather than at your phone. Answer the question that was asked and then stop; volunteering long explanations creates new threads for follow-up questions.

If you do not understand, say so politely: “Sorry, could you repeat that, please?” This is far better than guessing and giving a wrong answer. Never make jokes about bombs, drugs, overstaying or smuggling, even in a light-hearted way – at a border, humour about prohibited items is treated as a serious statement.

Sorry, could you repeat that, please?”

Keep a neutral, calm expression, keep your hands visible, and have your folder already open at the right page before you reach the desk. Small preparations like this reduce the length of the encounter significantly.

8. UK Customs: Red, Green and Blue Channels |

After baggage reclaim you will choose a customs channel. The three-channel system is one of the clearest tests of honesty on the whole journey.

  • Green channel – for travellers arriving from outside the UK who have nothing to declare and are carrying goods within the allowances –
  • Red channel – for anyone with goods to declare, goods over the allowance, or anyone who is simply unsure –
  • Blue channel – a legacy route for arrivals from within the EU; it is no longer the standard route following the UK’s exit from the EU, so most students will use green or red – 蓝色通道——原本为来自欧盟的旅客设置的通道;在英国脱欧后已不再是标准通道,因此大多数学生只需走绿色或红色

If you are unsure, always take the red channel. Walking through the green channel with undeclared goods risks seizure of the items, a fine, and a record that can affect future visa applications. Declaring a borderline item usually costs nothing but a few minutes.

9. Goods You Must Declare |

The UK operates a personal allowance for goods brought in from outside the UK. The figures below are the standard adult allowances and are applied per person; you cannot pool your tobacco or alcohol allowance with a friend to increase the total.

200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250 g of tobacco
Alcohol 酒精 1 litre of spirits over 22% ABV, plus 2 litres of still wine, plus 16 litres of beer
Up to £390 in total value
Cash 现金 £10,000 or more in any currency

The alcohol allowance can be split. If you bring half of each category, you are still within the limit – which is why the rule is often drawn like this:

½ spirits + ½ wine + ½ beer = full alcohol allowance

Cash is treated separately and is checked for money-laundering reasons. If you carry £10,000 or more, you must declare it before you pass through customs, using the official declaration process.

Cash ≥ £10,000 (or currency equivalent) → declare before customs

Two practical notes for students. First, keep receipts for expensive electronics bought abroad, because brand-new laptops and cameras attract attention and are easier to clear when you can show when and where you bought them. Second, gifts count towards the £390 allowance, so a suitcase of presents can push you over the limit even if nothing is for you.
