As scientific knowledge expands at an ever-accelerating pace, educators often struggle to strike a balance between covering a wide range of topics and fostering deep conceptual understanding.

The updated AP® Biology course tackles this issue by moving away from a traditional “content coverage” approach toward a focus on lasting, conceptual understandings and the supporting material. This shift allows students to devote less effort to memorizing facts and more to investigating fundamental ideas through inquiry, while also building the reasoning skills essential for the science practices embedded throughout AP Biology.

To promote deeper learning, the course’s content scope clearly separates the essential material that underpins the enduring understandings from a surplus of examples and applications that might otherwise weigh down the curriculum. Teachers are given illustrative examples—optional teaching contexts—to enrich student comprehension. The framework also explicitly identifies content that lies beyond the course and exam boundaries.

When AP Biology is built on this framework, students gain advanced skills in inquiry and reasoning—like planning data collection, analyzing data, using mathematical methods, and linking concepts within and across fields. This prepares them to tackle advanced college coursework — the core aim of every AP course.

The revised AP Biology course is equivalent to a full year of introductory college biology and has earned strong endorsements from higher education leaders.
