AP Art History
AP Art History introduces students to the intellectual rigor of a college-level survey, developing critical thinking and a deep awareness of art’s role across cultures and eras. Through close study of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other media, learners explore the historical and cultural forces that shape artistic creation. The course also helps schools enrich a subject often underrepresented in typical curricula. Students critically analyze major works from diverse traditions, both ancient and contemporary. While careful visual analysis remains a core skill, the discipline goes further, investigating how and why art operates within its social context—considering factors like patronage, gender, and the intended impact of artworks. Many universities award advanced standing or credit to those who excel on the AP Art History Exam.
