A-Level AQA Economics: Key Concept Clarifications | A-Level AQA

📚 A-Level AQA Economics: Key Concept Clarifications | A-Level AQA

Many AQA A-Level Economics students find it challenging to distinguish between closely related terms that appear throughout the specification. Mastering these distinctions is essential for scoring highly on data response and essay questions, where precise economic vocabulary is rewarded. This article clarifies the most frequently confused concept pairs, enabling you to write with confidence and avoid common pitfalls.

1. Positive vs. Normative Statements |

A positive statement is an objective, testable claim about how the economy actually works. It can be confirmed or refuted by examining empirical evidence. For example, ‘a rise in the national minimum wage will reduce employment among low-skilled workers’ is a positive statement because its truth can be investigated using labour market data.

A normative statement expresses a value judgement about what should happen. It involves subjective opinions and cannot be settled by facts alone. The claim ‘the minimum wage should be increased to help the working poor’ is normative; economic analysis can inform the debate but cannot prove the statement right or wrong.

Key exam tip: AQA questions often ask you to identify positive or normative elements. Words like ‘should’, ‘ought’, ‘fair’ or ‘better’ signal a normative stance.

2. Demand vs. Quantity Demanded |

Demand refers to the entire relationship between the price of a good and the quantity consumers are willing and able to buy over a given period, usually represented by the whole demand curve. A change in demand means a shift of the curve, caused by factors such as income, tastes or the prices of related goods.

Quantity demanded is a specific point on that demand curve—the amount consumers plan to buy at a particular price. A movement along the demand curve, triggered solely by a change in the good’s own price, changes the quantity demanded but does not shift demand.

Remember: ‘demand’ shifts; ‘quantity demanded’ slides.

3. Supply vs. Quantity Supplied |

Similarly, supply denotes the full schedule linking price and the quantity producers are willing to sell, depicted by the supply curve. Shifts in supply arise from changes in production costs, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies or the number of sellers.

Quantity supplied is a single number at a given price. When the good’s own price rises and firms move up along the supply curve, quantity supplied increases, but supply itself remains unchanged. Confusing these two can lead to serious errors in market diagrams.

4. Price Elasticity of Demand vs. Income Elasticity of Demand |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in the product’s own price. It is calculated as:

PED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price

PED is almost always negative due to the law of demand, though AQA often uses absolute values. A value greater than 1 indicates elastic demand; less than 1 indicates inelastic demand. PED helps firms predict revenue changes when they alter prices.

Income elasticity of demand (YED) measures how quantity demanded responds to a change in consumer income:

YED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in income

YED can be positive or negative. Normal goods have a positive YED (luxury goods >1, necessities between 0 and 1), while inferior goods have a negative YED. This distinction is vital when discussing the Business Cycle and economic growth.

正常品具有正YED(奢侈品>1,必需品介于0和1之间),而低档品的YED为负。

5. Short Run vs. Long Run in Economics |

In economics, the short run is a time period in which at least one factor of production is fixed. Typically, capital is fixed while labour is variable. For instance, a bakery cannot instantly install a new oven, so its capacity is constrained in the short run. Costs during this period are split into fixed and variable.

The long run is a period long enough for all factors of production to become variable. There are no fixed costs: the firm can adjust its scale of production, build larger factories or adopt new technology. In the long run, firms can only experience economies or diseconomies of scale, not fixed costs.

Short run is about constraints; long run is about flexibility.

6. Fixed Costs vs. Variable Costs |

Fixed costs (FC) do not vary with the level of output. They must be paid even when production is zero. Examples include rent, insurance premiums and the salaries of permanent staff. On the AQA syllabus, fixed costs are crucial for understanding the short-run cost structure and the concept of shutdown points.

Variable costs (VC) change directly with output. Raw materials, piece-rate wages and energy consumption are typical variable costs. When output rises, total variable cost rises. Together, FC and VC form total cost (TC = FC + VC).

  • FC: independent of quantity; VC: dependent on quantity.

7. Total, Average and Marginal Cost |

Total cost (TC) is the sum of all fixed and variable costs at a given output level. While total cost is useful for calculating profit, decisions about how much to produce are often based on marginal and average data.

Average total cost (ATC or AC) is total cost divided by output: ATC = TC ÷ Q. It tells us the cost per unit and determines whether a firm is making a per-unit profit or loss when compared with price.

Marginal cost (MC) is the additional cost of producing one more unit: MC = ΔTC ÷ ΔQ. The MC curve intersects the ATC curve at its minimum point. Profit-maximising output occurs where MC = MR, as long as price covers AVC.

8. Internal vs. External Economies of Scale |

Internal economies of scale are reductions in long-run average costs that arise from the growth of the firm itself. They include technical economies (specialised machinery), managerial economies (division of managerial labour), financial economies (cheaper borrowing), marketing economies (bulk buying) and risk-bearing economies (diversification). All these are firm-specific.

External economies of scale benefit all firms in an industry as the industry grows. For instance, the establishment of better transport links, a pool of skilled labour or a reputation for quality in a particular region reduces costs for every firm located there. These are external to the individual firm but internal to the industry.

Internal External
Caused by firm’s own expansion Caused by industry expansion
Shifts the firm’s LRAC downwards Shifts the entire industry cost structure downwards

9. Microeconomics vs. Macroeconomics |

Microeconomics studies the behaviour of individual economic agents—households, firms and governments—in specific markets. Topics include supply and demand, price determination, market structures, labour markets and market failure. It is concerned with efficiency, equity and resource allocation at a granular level.

Macroeconomics analyses the economy as a whole. It focuses on aggregates such as GDP, inflation, unemployment, international trade, monetary and fiscal policy, and national income. Macroeconomists explore how government intervention can stabilise the Business Cycle and promote long-run growth.

Micro looks at trees; macro looks at the forest.

10. Economic Growth vs. Economic Development |

Economic growth is a narrower, quantitative concept: an increase in a country’s real GDP or potential output over time. In AQA exams, short-run growth is shown by an outward movement of a point within the PPF, while long-run growth is illustrated by an outward shift of the PPF or the LRAS curve.

Economic development is a broader, qualitative concept that captures improvements in living standards, reduced poverty, better health and education, greater political freedom and environmental sustainability. The Human Development Index (HDI), which combines life expectancy, education and income, is often used to measure development. A country can experience growth without meaningful development, for example if income gains are concentrated among the rich.

Growth is about more output; development is about better lives.
