1. Stellar Luminosity and the Stefan–Boltzmann Law |

The total power radiated by a star, known as its luminosity L, depends on its radius R and surface temperature T according to the Stefan–Boltzmann law:

L = 4πR²σT⁴

Here σ is the Stefan–Boltzmann constant (5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴). A star with a larger radius or a higher surface temperature will be much more luminous. For example, if star A has twice the radius and twice the temperature of star B, then L_A = 4π(2R_B)²σ(2T_B)⁴ = 64 L_B.

This law also implies that for a given luminosity, a star with a higher temperature must have a smaller radius. This is why white dwarfs, although very hot, are faint – they are extremely small.

2. Wien’s Displacement Law and Stellar Surface Temperature |

Wien’s displacement law relates the peak wavelength λ_max of the black-body radiation emitted by a star to its surface temperature T:

λ_max T = 2.898 × 10⁻³ m K

Hotter stars emit most of their radiation at shorter (bluer) wavelengths, while cooler stars peak at longer (redder) ones. This allows astronomers to estimate a star’s temperature from its colour. For instance, the Sun’s surface temperature is about 5800 K, giving λ_max ≈ 500 nm (green–yellow region), whereas a star like Betelgeuse with T ≈ 3500 K has λ_max ≈ 828 nm (near-infrared), appearing reddish.

Together with the Stefan–Boltzmann law, Wien’s law allows a complete description of a star’s radiation, linking colour, temperature and luminosity.

3. The Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram and Spectral Classification |

The Hertzsprung–Russell (H–R) diagram plots stellar luminosity (or absolute magnitude) against surface temperature (or spectral type). Most stars lie on the main sequence, a band running from hot, luminous O- and B-type stars to cool, dim M-type stars. The Sun is a G2-type main-sequence star. Above the main sequence are giants and supergiants, which are very luminous but cool, while below it are white dwarfs – hot but faint due to their tiny radii. The spectral sequence O, B, A, F, G, K, M is remembered by the mnemonic ‘Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me’.

光谱型序列 O, B, A, F, G, K, M 可用 “Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me” 来记忆。

The H–R diagram is a powerful tool for understanding stellar evolution, as stars move across the diagram as they age. For example, a solar-mass star migrates from the main sequence to the red giant branch, then to the horizontal branch, and finally to the white dwarf region.

4. Apparent and Absolute Magnitude, and the Distance Modulus |

The apparent magnitude m of a star measures its brightness as seen from Earth, while the absolute magnitude M is the brightness it would have if placed at a standard distance of 10 parsecs. The relationship is given by the distance modulus formula:

m − M = 5 log₁₀(d / 10)

where d is the distance in parsecs (1 pc ≈ 3.26 light-years). A difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a brightness ratio of exactly 100, so each magnitude step corresponds to a factor of about 2.512 in brightness.
