📚 Electrolysis: Key Concepts and Exam Tips |

Electrolysis is a fundamental topic in A-Level Chemistry that involves using electrical energy to drive non-spontaneous chemical reactions. Mastery of this topic requires a clear understanding of electrolytic cell components, prediction of electrode products, and the application of Faraday’s laws for quantitative analysis. This revision guide covers essential definitions, reaction patterns, industrial examples, and common exam pitfalls.

1. Introduction to Electrolysis |

Electrolysis is the process of decomposing an ionic compound (either molten or dissolved in water) by passing a direct electric current through it. Unlike a galvanic cell that spontaneously produces electricity, an electrolytic cell consumes electrical energy to force a non-spontaneous redox reaction to take place. The external power source pushes electrons into the negative electrode and pulls them out of the positive electrode.

2. Key Definitions and Terminology |

Electrolyte: An ionic substance that conducts electricity when molten or in aqueous solution due to the presence of free-moving ions.

Cathode: The negative electrode where reduction (gain of electrons) occurs. Cations are attracted to the cathode.

Anode: The positive electrode where oxidation (loss of electrons) occurs. Anions are attracted to the anode.

Anion (e.g., Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻): A negatively charged ion that moves to the anode.

Cation (e.g., Na⁺, Cu²⁺): A positively charged ion that moves to the cathode.

Discharge: The process where ions gain or lose electrons at the electrodes to form neutral products.

3. Electrolytic Cells | 电解池
