1. Relative Atomic Mass (Aᵣ) and Relative Formula Mass (Mᵣ) | 相对原子质量 (Aᵣ) 与相对式量 (Mᵣ)
Relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the average mass of atoms of an element relative to 1/12th the mass of a carbon‑12 atom. It has no units. On the periodic table, Aᵣ is usually the larger number shown for each element, e.g. carbon = 12, oxygen = 16.
Relative formula mass (Mᵣ) is the sum of all the Aᵣ values of the atoms in a chemical formula. For ionic compounds we call it relative formula mass; for molecules it is also called relative molecular mass. The calculation is exactly the same.
Mᵣ = Σ Aᵣ of each element × number of atoms present
Example: H₂O → (2 × 1) + 16 = 18. Ca(OH)₂ → 40 + (2 × 16) + (2 × 1) = 74. MgSO₄ → 24 + 32 + (4 × 16) = 120.
示例: H₂O → (2 × 1) + 16 = 18。Ca(OH)₂ → 40 + (2 × 16) + (2 × 1) = 74。MgSO₄ → 24 + 32 + (4 × 16) = 120。
Exam questions often ask you to calculate Mᵣ from given Aᵣ values or directly from the periodic table. Always show your working clearly.
2. What Is a Mole? |
The mole is the SI unit for amount of substance. One mole of any substance contains exactly 6.02 × 10²³ particles (atoms, molecules, ions, or electrons). This number is called the Avogadro constant, symbol Nₐ.
Why 6.02 × 10²³? Because 12 g of carbon‑12 contains exactly that many atoms. In other words, one mole of a substance has a mass in grams equal to its relative formula mass (Mᵣ).
Visualising the mole: 1 mol of water (H₂O) has a mass of 18 g and contains 6.02 × 10²³ water molecules. 1 mol of sodium chloride (NaCl) has a mass of 58.5 g and contains 6.02 × 10²³ formula units of NaCl.
3. Mass–Mole Conversions |
The central equation linking mass, molar mass and moles is:
mass (g) = moles × molar mass (g mol⁻¹) or moles = mass ÷ Mᵣ
Molar mass is simply the Mᵣ expressed in grams per mole (g mol⁻¹). For example, the molar mass of CO₂ is 44 g mol⁻¹, so 2 moles of CO₂ have a mass of 2 × 44 = 88 g.
Worked example: Calculate the mass of 0.25 mol of NaOH. (Aᵣ: Na=23, O=16, H=1) Mᵣ of NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40. Mass = 0.25 × 40 = 10 g.
(Aᵣ: Na=23, O=16, H=1) NaOH 的 Mᵣ = 23+16+1=40。质量 = 0.25 × 40 = 10 g。
Reverse calculation: How many moles are there in 80 g of calcium (Aᵣ = 40)? Moles = mass / Aᵣ = 80 / 40 = 2 mol.
Always check that your final units are correct. If mass is in grams and Mᵣ is used, the mole value is obtained directly.
4. Moles and Gas Volumes (Molar Volume) |
At room temperature and pressure (RTP, 20 °C and 1 atm), one mole of any gas occupies a volume of 24 dm³. This is called the molar gas volume, Vₘ.
volume (dm³) = moles × 24 or moles = volume (dm³) ÷ 24
If the volume is given in cm³, you must convert to dm³ first by dividing by 1000, because 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³.
Example: Find the volume occupied by 0.5 mol of hydrogen gas at RTP. Volume = 0.5 × 24 = 12 dm³ (or 12 000 cm³).
Example 2: How many moles of CO₂ are there in 480 cm³ at RTP? First, 480 cm³ = 480/1000 = 0.48 dm³. Moles = 0.48 / 24 = 0.02 mol.
This relationship only applies to gases and only at RTP. Questions may remind you of the molar volume, but it’s worth memorising ’24 dm³’.
5. Moles and Solution Concentration |
The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute dissolved per unit volume. In AQA GCSE Chemistry, concentration is normally expressed in mol dm⁻³.
concentration (mol dm⁻³) = moles / volume (dm³) or moles = concentration × volume (dm³)
Rearranging the formula is a key skill. If you know any two of the three variables, you can find the third.
Worked example: 0.1 mol of sodium hydroxide is dissolved in water to make 500 cm³ of solution. What is the concentration? 500 cm³ = 0.5 dm³. Concentration = 0.1 mol / 0.5 dm³ = 0.2 mol dm⁻³.
500 cm³ = 0.5 dm³。浓度 = 0.1 mol / 0.5 dm³ = 0.2 mol dm⁻³。
Sometimes you are given the mass of solute instead of moles. In that case, first convert mass to moles using n = m/Mᵣ, then apply the concentration formula.
| Quantity | Symbol & Unit | Formula triangle tip |
| Concentration | c (mol dm⁻³) | c = n / V |
| Moles | n (mol) | n = c × V |
| Volume | V (dm³) | V = n / c |
Remember: volume must be in dm³. To convert from cm³ to dm³, divide by 1000.
6. Interpreting Balanced Equations |
A balanced chemical equation tells you the ratio in which substances react and are produced, and this ratio applies to both molecules and moles. The coefficients in front of each formula give the mole ratio.
For example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. This means 2 moles of H₂ react with 1 mole of O₂ to produce 2 moles of H₂O. The mole ratio H₂ : O₂ : H₂O is 2 : 1 : 2.
These ratios are the heart of reacting mass calculations. Never just assume a 1:1 ratio – always look at the balanced equation provided or balance it yourself.
If no equation is given but you know the names of reactants and products, you must write the word equation, then substitute formulas, and finally balance it before extracting mole ratios.
7. Reacting Mass Calculations |
These calculations use the mole ratio from the balanced equation to work out the mass of a reactant needed or the mass of a product formed. The general method has four clear steps:
Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation. Step 2: Convert the known quantity (mass, gas volume, or solution volume/concentration) into moles. Step 3: Use the mole ratio to find the moles of the unknown substance. Step 4: Convert these moles into the required quantity (mass/volume/concentration).
Worked example: What mass of magnesium oxide (MgO) is produced when 60 g of magnesium burns completely in air? (Aᵣ: Mg=24, O=16) Equation: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. Moles of Mg = 60/24 = 2.5 mol. From the equation, mole ratio Mg : MgO = 2 : 2 = 1 : 1, so moles of MgO = 2.5 mol. Mᵣ of MgO = 24 + 16 = 40. Mass of MgO = 2.5 × 40 = 100 g.
For problems involving solutions or gases, simply adjust Steps 2 and 4 to use the concentration or molar volume equations. Keep the mole ratio as the bridge between substances.
8. Limiting Reactants |
Often reactants are not mixed in exactly the ratio the equation requires. The reactant that is completely used up first is called the limiting reactant. The other reactant is in excess.
The amount of product formed depends entirely on the limiting reactant. To identify it, calculate the moles of each reactant available, then check which one provides fewer moles according to the required mole ratio.
Example: 2.0 g of hydrogen (H₂) reacts with 16.0 g of oxygen (O₂). Who limits the reaction? 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Moles of H₂ = 2.0/2 = 1.0 mol; moles of O₂ = 16.0/32 = 0.5 mol. From equation, 2 mol H₂ require 1 mol O₂. So 1.0 mol H₂ would need 0.5 mol O₂ — and we have exactly 0.5 mol O₂. Neither is in excess; both are completely consumed. If we had only 0.4 mol O₂, then O₂ would be limiting.
Once the limiting reactant is identified, all subsequent reacting mass calculations must be based on its moles, not on the excess reactant.
9. Percentage Yield |
Theoretical yield is the maximum mass of product that could be made from a given amount of limiting reactant, calculated using mole ratios. In practice, the yield is often lower due to incomplete reactions, side reactions, or losses during purification.
percentage yield = (actual mass of product obtained / theoretical mass) × 100
To find the theoretical mass, perform a normal reacting mass calculation from the given mass of reactant. Then compare with the actual mass given in the exam question.
Example: Heating calcium carbonate produced 3.6 g of calcium oxide, but the theoretical yield was 4.0 g. Percentage yield = (3.6/4.0) × 100 = 90%.
You will not be expected to explain why the yield is less than 100% in a calculation question, but you might be asked in a separate ‘suggest a reason’ style question. Common answers: product left in the flask, loss during filtration, or reaction not completing.
10. Atom Economy |
Atom economy measures the proportion of reactant atoms that end up in the desired product. It is a measure of the efficiency of a reaction and is important in green chemistry.
atom economy = (Mᵣ of desired product / sum of Mᵣ of all reactants) × 100
Note: in this formula, the reactant masses are taken directly from the balanced equation – if a reactant has a coefficient, its Mᵣ is multiplied by that number. The desired product is also taken in the amount shown in the equation (usually with its own coefficient).
Example: Production of ethylene from ethanol: C₂H₅OH → C₂H₄ + H₂O. Mᵣ of desired product C₂H₄ = 28. Mᵣ of reactant C₂H₅OH = 46. Atom economy = (28/46) × 100 = 60.9%. The rest of the mass ends up in water – a waste but not harmful.
Atom economy is distinct from yield. A reaction can have 100% yield but low atom economy, meaning it produces a lot of waste atoms even if no product is lost. In industry, high atom economy reduces waste and cost.
11. Rapid Recap: The Mole Map |
All mole calculations can be thought of as moving between four ‘stations’: mass, gas volume, solution concentration, and balanced equation. The mole is always the central hub.
- Mass ↔ moles: n = m / Mᵣ ↔ m = n × Mᵣ
- Gas volume ↔ moles: n = V(dm³) / 24 ↔ V = n × 24
- Solution ↔ moles: n = c × V(dm³) ↔ c = n / V
