📚 GCSE AQA Economics: Typical Exam Questions Explained | GCSE AQA

Mastering typical exam questions is the most reliable path to a top grade in GCSE AQA Economics. This guide walks through commonly tested question types, breaking down what examiners expect in terms of knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. Each section provides a model scenario and a step-by-step explanation, followed by an English–Chinese paired commentary to reinforce understanding and exam technique.

1. Opportunity Cost Questions |

Typical AQA question: “Sara has saved £50 and must choose between buying a designer bag for £45 or going to a theme park with an entry fee of £40. If she buys the bag, she will also need to pay £5 for delivery. Identify and explain the opportunity cost of choosing the bag.”

The opportunity cost is the next best alternative forgone. When Sara buys the bag and pays delivery, she spends £50, leaving no money for the theme park. The next best alternative given up is the enjoyment and experience of the theme park, which she values at £40. Therefore, the opportunity cost is the theme park trip. It is not the money spent, because the money itself is not the alternative; the true cost is the benefit lost from the forgone activity.

Examiner tip: Always state the opportunity cost explicitly and justify why it is the next best alternative, not simply the amount of money involved. In evaluation, consider that the value of the next best alternative may be subjective.

2. Production Possibility Frontier (PPF) Questions |

Example: A country can produce only capital goods and consumer goods. Four output combinations are: A (0 capital, 100 consumer), B (30 capital, 90 consumer), C (50 capital, 50 consumer) and D (60 capital, 0 consumer). Points A to D form a downward-sloping PPF. The question asks: “Identify one point that would represent unemployed resources and explain what the PPF shows about opportunity cost.”

四种产出组合为:A(0资本品,100消费品)、B(30资本品,90消费品)、C(50资本品,50消费品)和D(60资本品,0消费品)。

A point such as E (20 capital, 40 consumer) lying inside the curve indicates unemployed resources or inefficiency. On the PPF curve itself, all points are productively efficient. Moving from B to C involves giving up 40 consumer goods to gain 20 capital goods, so the opportunity cost of 1 extra capital good is 2 consumer goods. The curved shape often illustrates increasing opportunity cost.

For higher marks, explain that an outward shift of the PPF represents economic growth, caused by factors such as more resources or better technology.

3. Determinants of Demand |

Typical question: “State and explain one factor that would cause an increase in the demand for electric cars.”

One valid answer: a rise in consumer incomes. Since electric cars are normal goods, higher incomes increase willingness and ability to buy, shifting the demand curve to the right from D1 to D2. This results in a higher equilibrium price and quantity, ceteris paribus.

Other acceptable factors include a fall in the price of a complement (e.g. cheaper charging points), a rise in the price of a substitute (e.g. petrol cars becoming more expensive), or changes in tastes driven by environmental awareness. Always connect the factor clearly to a rightward shift of the demand curve.

4. Market Equilibrium and Disequilibrium |

Example using linear equations: Qd = 500 – 2P, Qs = –100 + 4P. Find the equilibrium price and quantity. Then explain what happens if the government sets a maximum price of £80.

Set Qd = Qs: 500 – 2P = –100 + 4P → 600 = 6P → P = 100, Q = 300. At a maximum price of £80, which is below equilibrium, Qd = 500 – 160 = 340 and Qs = –100 + 320 = 220. There is excess demand of 120 units. This shortage can lead to black markets and reduced consumer surplus for those unable to buy.

令Qd = Qs:500 – 2P = –100 + 4P → 600 = 6P → P = 100, Q = 300。

Always show the working and reference the price mechanism. For evaluation, discuss whether the policy protects consumers on low incomes or distorts the market.

5. Price Elasticity of Demand Calculation |

Question: “A firm reduces the price of its product from £20 to £16. The quantity demanded increases from 50 units to 70 units. Calculate the price elasticity of demand (PED) and interpret the result.”

Formula: PED = %ΔQd / %ΔP. %ΔQd = [(70 – 50) / 50] × 100 = 40%. %ΔP = [(16 – 20) / 20] × 100 = –20%. Therefore, PED = 40% / –20% = –2. The absolute value is 2, which is greater than 1, so demand is price elastic. A price cut raises total revenue because the percentage increase in quantity demanded outweighs the percentage fall in price.

公式:PED = %ΔQd / %ΔP。%ΔQd = [(70 – 50) / 50] × 100 = 40%。%ΔP = [(16 – 20) / 20] × 100 = –20%。

Remember that PED is always negative due to the law of demand, but examiners often ask you to interpret the magnitude. For evaluation, mention that an increase in total revenue depends on PED being elastic, and this may not last if competitors respond or consumer tastes change.

6. Externalities and Market Failure |

Typical question: “Explain how a negative production externality from a factory polluting a river leads to market failure. Use a diagram in your answer.”

In the free market, the factory decides output where marginal private cost (MPC) equals marginal private benefit (MSB), producing Qm. However, the pollution imposes external costs on third parties (e.g. loss of fishing), so marginal social cost (MSC) exceeds MPC. The socially optimal output is Qopt, where MSC = MSB. Overproduction of Qm – Qopt creates a welfare loss shown by the deadweight loss triangle between the curves.

Draw the MSC above MPC, label the vertical distance as the external cost, and shade the welfare loss area. To correct the failure, the government could impose a tax equal to the external cost, internalising the externality.

7. Government Intervention – Indirect Taxes |

Question: “Using a demand and supply diagram, analyse the effects of an indirect tax on plastic packaging and evaluate its effectiveness in reducing plastic waste.”

An indirect tax shifts the supply curve vertically upwards by the amount of the tax. The new equilibrium price paid by consumers rises, while the price received by producers falls. The quantity traded decreases from Qe to Q1, so plastic packaging consumption falls. The tax revenue rectangle goes to the government. The incidence of the tax depends on the relative elasticities: if demand is inelastic, consumers bear a larger share.

Evaluation: The tax may be effective if demand is elastic, but for essential plastic items demand tends to be inelastic, so quantity cut might be limited. The tax is regressive if it takes a larger proportion of low-income households’ incomes. Alternative policies such as subsidies for biodegradable alternatives or outright bans could be more effective.

8. Macroeconomic Objectives |

Typical question: “Explain two macroeconomic objectives and how they may conflict.”

The four major objectives are low and stable inflation, low unemployment, sustained economic growth and a satisfactory balance of payments on current account. For example, aiming for high economic growth through expansionary policies can reduce unemployment but may cause demand-pull inflation, thereby conflicting with the goal of stable prices. This short-run trade-off is often illustrated by the Phillips curve.

Another conflict: rapid economic growth may increase imports of raw materials and consumer goods, worsening the current account balance. In
