📚 IGCSE Science: Common Misconceptions | IGCSE

Many IGCSE Science students lose marks not because they don’t study hard enough, but because they hold onto ideas that seem correct but are scientifically inaccurate. These misconceptions often arise from everyday language, oversimplifications at earlier stages of learning, or intuitive but flawed mental models. This article identifies some of the most common misunderstandings in IGCSE Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, explains the correct scientific concepts, and provides clear comparisons to help you avoid these pitfalls in your exams.

1. Living vs Non‑living: ‘Movement’ Is Not Enough |

A classic misconception is that any object that moves is alive. Clouds move across the sky, cars travel along roads, and a rolling stone certainly changes position, yet none of these are living. IGCSE Biology requires you to apply the seven life processes (MRS GREN: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition) as a complete set. Movement alone is not a reliable indicator of life. For a fire, many students say it ‘moves’, ‘grows’, and ‘respires’ because it consumes oxygen. However, a fire does not show sensitivity, it does not excrete, and it does not reproduce with genetic material, so it is not living.

2. Respiration Does Not Mean Breathing |

In everyday English, respiration is often used as a synonym for breathing. In IGCSE Biology, however, respiration is a chemical process that releases energy from glucose inside cells. Breathing, correctly called ventilation, is the muscular movement that moves air in and out of the lungs. The equation for aerobic respiration is: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy). This occurs in mitochondria and happens in every living cell continuously. Breathing simply supplies the oxygen and removes the carbon dioxide; it is not the same as the energy‑releasing process itself.

3. Gases Do Not Have Mass |

A widespread misconception in both Chemistry and Physics is that gases weigh nothing. Students often think that because a gas is invisible or floats, it has no mass. In reality, all matter has mass, and gases are no exception. A fully inflated balloon has greater mass than a deflated one. The misconception often leads to errors in balancing chemical equations where a gaseous product is produced, or in explaining changes in mass during reactions that evolve gas. For example, when a metal carbonate reacts with an acid, the loss in mass of the flask is not because carbon dioxide has no mass, but because it escapes into the air.

4. Heat and Temperature Are the Same | 热量与温度是同一回事

In IGCSE Physics, understanding thermal physics requires a clear distinction between heat and temperature. Temperature measures the average kinetic energy of particles in a substance; it does not depend on the amount of material. Heat, on the other hand, is a form of energy transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one, and it depends on the mass, specific heat capacity, and temperature change. A sparkler at 800 °C contains much less thermal energy than a bath of water at 40 °C. This explains why you can safely put your hand into a hot oven briefly but not into boiling water — the air has a very low specific heat capacity and low density, so it transfers far less heat to your skin per unit volume.

5. Current Is ‘Used Up’ in a Circuit |

Many students draw a series circuit and believe the current is largest near the positive terminal of the battery and diminishes after passing through a lamp or resistor. In an IGCSE Physics series circuit, the current is the same at all points. What is transferred to components is energy, not current. The charged particles (electrons in a metal) are already everywhere in the circuit and simply drift around in a closed loop; the battery provides the energy per unit charge (voltage) that they deliver to components. An ammeter placed before and after a lamp will read exactly the same value.

6. Plants Get Their Food from the Soil |

A deeply ingrained misconception is that plants absorb ‘food’ directly from the soil through their roots. In fact, plants make their own food — glucose — by photosynthesis, using carbon dioxide and water, driven by light energy. What plants absorb from the soil are water and mineral ions (such as nitrates and magnesium), which are raw materials, not food. The glucose produced is then used for respiration, converted to starch for storage, or used to synthesise cellulose, proteins, and other substances. Confusing nutrients with food is a common source of error in IGCSE Biology nutrition questions.

7. Atoms Are Solid Spheres |

Early in their studies, students encounter the simple model of an atom as a tiny, hard, indivisible sphere, similar to a billiard ball. This model is useful historically and for understanding the particle nature of matter, but it often persists as the student’s mental image well into IGCSE Chemistry. In reality, an atom is mostly empty space with a tiny, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in electron shells. The diameter of the nucleus is about 10 000 times smaller than the diameter of the atom itself. Understanding this structure is crucial when explaining chemical bonding, ion formation, and the concept of atomic number and mass number.

8. Chemical Bonding Is Driven by the ‘Octet Rule’ as a Goal |

Students often write that atoms form bonds ‘in order to achieve a full outer shell’ as if atoms have intentions. This introduces a teleological mindset, which can hinder understanding of energetics. In IGCSE Chemistry, bonding occurs because the resulting arrangement has lower energy than the separate atoms. The octet rule is a useful pattern, not a cause. When sodium reacts with chlorine, the sodium atom loses an electron because the process is exothermic overall — the energy released when the electron is gained by chlorine and the ions come together more than compensates for the energy needed to remove the electron from sodium. The full outer shell is a consequence, not the driving force.

9. Heavier Objects Fall Faster |

This is one of the oldest and most stubborn misconceptions in physics. Many IGCSE students, when asked about a feather and a hammer dropped in a vacuum, still hesitate because their everyday experience of air resistance has generalised into a rule. In the absence of air resistance, all objects accelerate towards the Earth at the same rate, approximately 9.8 m/s², regardless of their mass. The famous Apollo 15 experiment on the Moon demonstrated this perfectly. On Earth, a hammer falls faster than a feather only because air resistance has a proportionally greater effect on objects with a larger surface area relative to their mass. In the IGCSE exam, always check whether air resistance is considered negligible.

10. If an Object Is Moving, There Must Be a Force Acting on It | 物体运动就必须有力的作用

A common pre‑Newtonian misconception is that a continuous force is required to keep an object moving. In IGCSE Physics, Newton’s first law states that an object will remain at rest or move with constant velocity unless a resultant force acts on it. Therefore, a spacecraft drifting in deep space with its engines off can continue moving indefinitely at a constant speed in a straight line with no forward force at all. Motion does not imply a force; acceleration does. A constant velocity means the forces are balanced, or there are no forces at all.
