📚 GCSE Chemistry: Reaction Rates Revision Guide | GCSE 化学:反应速率 考点精讲

Understanding how fast chemical reactions occur is a fundamental part of GCSE Chemistry. Whether you’re watching a piece of magnesium fizz away in acid or observing the slow rusting of iron, the speed of a reaction—its rate—depends on several key factors. This guide walks you through everything you need to know: defining rate, measuring it, collision theory, and the five main factors that influence it. We’ll also cover experimental methods and graph interpretation, so you’re fully prepared for exam questions.

理解化学反应的速度是 GCSE 化学的一个基本部分。无论是观察镁条在酸中剧烈冒泡,还是观察铁慢慢生锈,反应的速度——速率——都取决于几个关键因素。本文带你梳理所有考点:速率的定义、测量方法、碰撞理论以及影响速率的五个主要因素。我们还会涵盖实验方法和图表解读,帮助你全面备考。

1. What Is Rate of Reaction? | 什么是反应速率?

The rate of a chemical reaction is a measure of how quickly reactants are used up or how quickly products are formed. It tells us the change in amount of a substance per unit time. In most GCSE problems, we measure rate as the change in concentration of a reactant or product per second, or the volume of gas produced per second.

化学反应速率衡量了反应物被消耗或产物生成的速度。它表示单位时间内物质的量的变化。在大多数 GCSE 题目中,速率表示为每秒反应物或产物浓度的变化,或者每秒产生气体的体积。

For example, in the reaction between marble chips and hydrochloric acid, the rate can be followed by measuring the volume of carbon dioxide gas given off at regular intervals. The faster the gas is produced, the higher the rate.

例如,在大理石碎片与盐酸的反应中,可以通过定期测量释放的二氧化碳气体体积来追踪速率。气体产生得越快,速率就越高。

Rate = Change in amount of reactant or product ÷ Time

速率 = 反应物或产物的变化量 ÷ 时间

2. Measuring Reaction Rates | 测量反应速率的方法

There are several practical ways to measure the rate of a reaction, and you need to be able to describe them in the exam. The choice depends on what is easiest to observe and measure accurately. The three most common methods are: measuring the volume of gas evolved, measuring the change in mass, and observing the formation of a precipitate.

实验中有多种测量反应速率的方法,你需要在考试中能够描述它们。选择哪种方法取决于什么最容易观察和准确测量。最常见的三种方法是:测量释放的气体体积、测量质量变化以及观察沉淀的生成。

In the gas volume method, a gas syringe or an upturned measuring cylinder filled with water is used to collect the gas produced. Readings are taken at regular time intervals. In the mass change method, the reaction flask is placed on a balance, and the decrease in mass as gas escapes is recorded. For precipitation reactions, you can measure the time it takes for a cross drawn on paper to disappear under the reaction mixture as the precipitate forms.

在气体体积法中,使用气体注射器或装满水的倒置量筒收集产生的气体,并定期记录读数。在质量变化法中,将反应容器放在天平上,记录由于气体逸出而减少的质量。对于沉淀反应,可以测量在纸片上的十字标记因沉淀生成而看不见所需的时间。

3. Collision Theory | 碰撞理论

Reactions happen because particles collide. But not every collision leads to a reaction. For a reaction to take place, the colliding particles must have a minimum amount of energy, called the activation energy, and they must collide in the correct orientation. This is the core idea of collision theory, and it explains why the rate changes when we alter conditions.

反应发生是因为粒子相互碰撞。但不是每一次碰撞都会导致反应。要使反应发生,碰撞的粒子必须具有最低限度的能量,称为活化能,并且必须以正确的取向碰撞。这就是碰撞理论的核心思想,它解释了为什么条件改变时速率会变化。

The more successful collisions that occur per second, the faster the reaction rate. Successful collisions are those that have energy equal to or greater than the activation energy and the right geometry. Any factor that increases the frequency of successful collisions will increase the reaction rate.

每秒发生的有效碰撞越多,反应速率就越快。有效碰撞是指能量等于或高于活化能且取向正确的碰撞。任何增加有效碰撞频率的因素都会提高反应速率。

4. Factors Affecting Rate: Overview | 影响速率的因素:总览

At GCSE, you must know five factors that can change the rate of a chemical reaction: temperature, concentration (of solutions), pressure (of gases), surface area (of solids), and the presence of a catalyst. Each factor influences the frequency and/or energy of collisions, leading to a change in the number of successful collisions per second.

在 GCSE 阶段,你需要掌握可以改变化学反应速率的五个因素:温度、浓度(溶液的)、压力(气体的)、表面积(固体的)以及催化剂的存在。每个因素都会影响碰撞的频率和/或能量,从而导致每秒有效碰撞次数的变化。

Importantly, catalyst is the only factor that lowers the activation energy; all other factors simply provide particles with more energy or bring them closer together more often. A summary table is helpful to compare them.

重要的是,催化剂是唯一降低活化能的因素;其他因素只是给粒子提供更多能量,或者让它们更频繁地靠近。用一个总结表格来比较它们很有帮助。

Factor (因素) How It Increases Rate (如何提高速率) Collision Theory Link (与碰撞理论的关联)
Temperature (温度) Increases energy of particles, more exceed activation energy More successful collisions per second
Concentration (浓度) More particles in the same volume Collision frequency increases
Pressure (气体压力) Same effect as concentration for gases Collision frequency increases
Surface area (表面积) More solid particles exposed to collisions Collision frequency increases
Catalyst (催化剂) Provides an alternative pathway of lower activation energy More particles have enough energy to react

5. Temperature and Activation Energy | 温度与活化能

Raising the temperature gives particles more kinetic energy. They move faster and collide more often, which slightly increases the collision frequency. However, the much more significant effect is that a greater proportion of particles now have energy equal to or above the activation energy. This leads to a dramatic increase in the number of successful collisions.

升高温度使粒子获得更多动能。它们运动得更快,碰撞更频繁,从而略微增加了碰撞频率。然而,更显著的效果是,现在有更大比例的粒子具有等于或高于活化能的能量。这使得有效碰撞次数急剧增加。

Even a small temperature rise can double the rate of many reactions. This cannot be explained just by a small increase in collision frequency; the key is the exponential rise in the fraction of energetic particles. The distribution of particle energies shifts so that the area under the curve beyond the activation energy becomes much larger.

即使是小幅升温,也可能使许多反应的速率翻倍。这不能仅仅用碰撞频率的微小增加来解释;关键在于高能粒子比例呈指数上升。粒子能量分布发生移动,使得超过活化能的曲线下面积变得大得多。

6. Effect of Concentration and Pressure | 浓度和压力的影响

Increasing the concentration of reactants in a solution, or the pressure of a reacting gas, packs more particles into the same space. This means particles are closer together, so the frequency of collisions per unit time goes up. Since more collisions occur, the number of successful collisions per second also rises, provided the activation energy is met.

增加溶液中反应物的浓度,或增加反应气体的压力,会使更多粒子挤在同一空间内。这意味着粒子离得更近,因此单位时间内的碰撞频率增加。由于碰撞次数增多,只要满足活化能要求,每秒的有效碰撞次数也会上升。

For gases, doubling the pressure (by halving the volume) has the same effect as doubling the concentration of an aqueous solution. In both cases, the rate increases proportionally because the frequency of collisions is directly proportional to the concentration or pressure (for a given temperature).

对于气体,将压力加倍(通过将体积减半)与将水溶液浓度加倍的效果相同。在两种情况下,速率都会成比例增加,因为在一定温度下,碰撞频率与浓度或压力成正比。

7. Effect of Surface Area | 表面积的影响

For reactions involving a solid, breaking the solid into smaller pieces increases its surface area. This exposes more solid particles at the boundary where the reaction can happen, so there are more frequent collisions between reactant particles. A powder reacts much faster than a large lump of the same mass because the total surface area is far greater.

对于涉及固体的反应,将固体打碎成更小的块会增大其表面积。这使得更多固体颗粒暴露在反生反应的边界上,因此反应物粒子之间的碰撞更频繁。同样质量的粉末比大块固体反应快得多,因为总表面积大得多。

A classic experiment is the reaction of marble chips (calcium carbonate) with hydrochloric acid. If you use the same mass of marble, but in powdered form, the reaction rate rises dramatically, producing CO₂ gas much faster. The same underlying principle applies to dust explosions: fine combustible powders have huge surface areas and can react explosively.

一个经典实验是大理石碎片(碳酸钙)与盐酸的反应。如果使用相同质量的大理石,但采用粉末形式,反应速率会急剧上升,产生二氧化碳气体的速度大大加快。同样的原理也适用于粉尘爆炸:极细的可燃性粉末具有巨大的表面积,能够爆炸性地反应。

8. Catalysts and How They Work | 催化剂及其作用原理

A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up itself. It provides an alternative reaction pathway that has a lower activation energy. Because the energy barrier is lowered, a much larger fraction of particles now have enough energy to react when they collide. This massively increases the rate.

催化剂是一种能加速化学反应而自身不被消耗的物质。它提供了一条具有较低活化能的替代反应途径。由于能垒降低,现在有更大比例的粒子在碰撞时具有足够的能量进行反应。这极大地提高了反应速率。

Catalysts are not included in the overall chemical equation because they are chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction. At GCSE, you should recognise examples like manganese(IV) oxide catalyzing the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, or enzymes (biological catalysts) in living systems. The catalyst’s importance in industry lies in lowering energy costs and allowing lower temperatures to be used, which saves money and reduces CO₂ emissions from fuel combustion.

催化剂不写进总化学方程式中,因为它们在反应结束时化学性质不变。在 GCSE 阶段,你需要认识诸如二氧化锰催化过氧化氢分解、或者生物系统中的酶(生物催化剂)等例子。催化剂在工业上的重要性在于降低能源成本,允许使用较低的温度,这既省钱又减少了燃料燃烧产生的二氧化碳排放。

9. Required Practical: Investigating Rate | 必修实验:探究反应速率

A typical GCSE required practical involves measuring the rate of reaction between magnesium ribbon and a dilute acid, or between sodium thiosulfate solution and hydrochloric acid. The first produces hydrogen gas, so you can measure the volume of gas collected every few seconds. The second produces a yellow precipitate of sulfur, and the rate is determined by how quickly a black cross under the flask is obscured.

典型的 GCSE 必修实验包括测量镁条与稀酸之间的反应速率,或硫代硫酸钠溶液与盐酸之间的反应速率。前者产生氢气,因此可以每隔几秒测量收集到的气体体积。后者产生黄色的硫沉淀,通过测量烧瓶下黑色十字标记被遮蔽的快慢来确定速率。

For the magnesium/acid experiment, controlling variables is crucial: same volume and concentration of acid, same mass and length of magnesium, same temperature. The independent variable is time, the dependent variable is the volume of gas. Plotting volume against time gives a curve that levels off. The rate at any point is the gradient of the tangent to the curve.

对于镁与酸的实验,控制变量至关重要:相同的酸的体积和浓度、相同的镁条质量和长度、相同的温度。自变量是时间,因变量是气体的体积。绘制气体体积随时间变化的曲线,曲线会趋于平缓。任意时刻的速率是曲线切线的斜率。

10. Interpreting Rate Graphs | 解读速率图

Rate graphs are a staple of GCSE chemistry exams. Typically, you plot the amount of product formed (or reactant remaining) against time. The slope of the line tells you the rate. A steeper slope means a faster rate. As the reaction progresses, the line becomes less steep because reactants are being used up, so the rate decreases. Eventually the line becomes flat—this is when the reaction has finished.

速率图是 GCSE 化学考试的常见内容。通常,你画出产物生成量(或反应物剩余量)随时间的变化。线的斜率告诉你速率。斜率越陡,速率越快。随着反应进行,线变得不那么陡,因为反应物逐渐被消耗,所以速率下降。最终线变平——此时反应结束。

To find the rate at a specific time, draw a tangent to the curve at that point and calculate its gradient (change in y ÷ change in x). If you are comparing two different conditions (e.g., higher temperature vs lower temperature), the curve for the higher temperature will have a steeper initial slope and will level off more quickly, but both produce the same final amount of product if the same quantities are used.

要找出特定时间的速率,在该点处画一条曲线的切线,并计算其斜率(y 的变化量 ÷ x 的变化量)。如果你要比较两种不同的条件(例如高温与低温),较高温度的曲线初始斜率更陡,并更快趋于平缓,但如果反应物的量相同,两者最终产生的产物总量相同。

11. Reversible Reactions and Rate | 可逆反应与速率

Some reactions are reversible, meaning they can go forwards and backwards. The principles of rate still apply to the forward and reverse reactions individually. At equilibrium, the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction. Changing conditions such as temperature, concentration, or pressure affects the rates of the forward and reverse reactions, potentially shifting the position of equilibrium—this connects to Le Chatelier’s principle, but from a rate perspective, you can explain it by the differential effect on successful collisions.

有些反应是可逆的,意味着它们可以朝正向和反向进行。速率的原理仍然分别适用于正向和反向反应。在平衡状态下,正反应的速率等于逆反应的速率。改变温度、浓度或压力等条件会影响正反应和逆反应的速率,可能改变平衡位置——这与勒夏特列原理有关,但从速率的角度来看,你可以用对有效碰撞的不同影响来解释。

For example, if the forward reaction is exothermic, increasing the temperature increases the rate of the endothermic reverse reaction more than the forward reaction, shifting the equilibrium towards the reactants. This is because the activation energy for the reverse reaction is higher, so a temperature rise brings a larger proportional increase in successful collisions for that direction.

例如,如果正向反应是放热的,升高温度会更大幅度地增加吸热的逆反应速率,使平衡向反应物方向移动。这是因为逆反应的活化能更高,所以温度升高会为该方向的有效碰撞带来更大的比例增加。

12. Summary and Exam Tips | 总结与考试技巧

Rate of reaction is a topic that bridges many ideas in chemistry: particle model, energy changes, and experimental skills. The five factors all increase the number of successful collisions per second—either by increasing collision frequency or by increasing the fraction of particles with enough energy (or both). A catalyst is unique in that it provides a lower-energy path without being consumed.

反应速率是连接化学中众多概念的一个主题:粒子模型、能量变化以及实验技能。这五个因素都是通过增加每秒有效碰撞的次数来提高速率——要么增加碰撞频率,要么增加具有足够能量的粒子比例(或两者兼有)。催化剂的独特之处在于它提供了一条较低能量的路径,而自身不被消耗。

  • Define it clearly: always state ‘successful collisions per second’.
  • Use collision theory to explain why a factor changes rate; don’t just say ‘more collisions’.
  • In graphs, remember that steeper gradient = faster rate, and the final horizontal line represents completion.
  • For experiments, describe how you control variables, measure the rate, and the equipment used (gas syringe, balance, cross-on-paper).
  • 明确表述:始终说「每秒有效碰撞次数」。
  • 运用碰撞理论来解释某个因素为何改变速率;不要只说「更多碰撞」。
  • 在图表中,记住更陡的斜率 = 更快的速率,最终的水平线表示反应结束。
  • 对于实验,描述如何控制变量、如何测量速率,以及使用的设备(气体注射器、天平、纸片十字标记)。
