1. Ecosystems and Habitats |

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their non-living environment. It includes biotic factors (plants, animals, microorganisms) and abiotic factors (temperature, light, water, soil pH).

A habitat is the specific place where an organism lives. It provides food, shelter, and a suitable environment for reproduction. Different habitats support different species due to distinct abiotic conditions.

Examples include a pond ecosystem (with fish, algae, bacteria) and a woodland ecosystem (with trees, deer, fungi).

2. Energy Flow and Trophic Levels |

Energy enters most ecosystems as sunlight, captured by producers (plants, algae) through photosynthesis. This chemical energy is then transferred through food chains and food webs.

The trophic levels are: producers → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers (carnivores) → tertiary consumers. Decomposers break down dead matter at all levels, recycling nutrients.

Only about 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next; the rest is lost as heat through respiration, movement, and excretion. This limits the length of food chains.

Energy transfer efficiency = (Energy in next level ÷ Energy in previous level) × 100% ≈ 10%

3. Nutrient Cycles (Carbon and Nitrogen) |

The carbon cycle involves processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, combustion, and ocean uptake. Photosynthesis removes CO₂ from the atmosphere:

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

Respiration, decomposition, and burning fossil fuels return CO₂ to the atmosphere. Deforestation reduces carbon fixation and increases atmospheric CO₂ levels.

The nitrogen cycle is essential for making nitrogen available to plants. Key steps: nitrogen fixation (by bacteria, sometimes lightning), nitrification, assimilation, ammonification, and denitrification.

Leguminous plants have root nodules containing Rhizobium bacteria that fix atmospheric N₂ into ammonium. Nitrifying bacteria then convert ammonium into nitrites (NO₂⁻) and nitrates (NO₃⁻), which plants absorb.

Denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates back to N₂ gas, completing the cycle.

4. Population Dynamics |

A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in a particular area. Population size is affected by birth rate, death rate, immigration, and emigration.

When resources are unlimited, a population may grow exponentially. In reality, limiting factors (food, space, disease, predators) cause the population to reach the carrying capacity, shown in a sigmoid (S-shaped) growth curve.

Predator-prey relationships show cyclical fluctuations. For example, the lynx and snowshoe hare cycle, where predator numbers lag behind prey numbers.

5. Human Impact on Environment |

Human activities have significantly altered ecosystems. Agriculture, industry, urbanisation, and transport cause habitat destruction, pollution, and resource depletion.

Intensive farming uses large amounts of fertilisers and pesticides. Eutrophication occurs when excess fertilisers wash into water bodies, causing algal blooms that deplete oxygen and kill aquatic life.

Bioaccumulation is the build-up of a persistent chemical (e.g., DDT) in an organism; biomagnification is its increasing concentration along the food chain, harming top predators.

6. Pollution: Air, Water, Land |

Air pollution includes sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) from burning fossil fuels, which cause acid rain. Acid rain damages forests, acidifies lakes, and corrodes buildings.

Carbon monoxide (CO) from incomplete combustion binds to haemoglobin, reducing oxygen transport. Particulate matter can cause respiratory problems.

Water pollution originates from sewage, industrial waste, oil spills, and agricultural runoff. Sewage can introduce pathogens, while nitrates and phosphates cause eutrophication.

Land pollution includes solid waste disposal (landfills) and chemical contamination. Plastics persist for centuries, harming wildlife.

7. Global Warming and Climate Change |

Greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O), and CFCs—trap infrared radiation in the atmosphere, leading to the enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming.

Consequences include rising sea levels (due to melting ice caps and thermal expansion), more frequent extreme weather, disruption of ecosystems, and changes in agricultural patterns.

Reducing carbon emissions through renewable energy, energy efficiency, and afforestation can mitigate climate change.

CH₄ has a global warming potential about 25 times that of CO₂ over 100 years.

8. Conservation and Sustainability |

Conservation aims to protect species, habitats, and biodiversity for future generations. Methods include establishing protected areas, captive breeding, replanting forests, and legal protection.

Sustainability means using resources in ways that meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Examples: sustainable forestry, fisheries with quotas, and renewable energy use.

The overuse of fossil fuels is unsustainable because they are finite and contribute to climate change. Switching to solar, wind, and hydroelectric power supports sustainability.

9. Deforestation and Habitat Loss |

Deforestation is the large-scale removal of forests for timber, agriculture, or urban expansion. It leads to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, disruption of the water cycle, and increased carbon dioxide levels.

Forests act as carbon sinks; their destruction releases stored carbon. Loss of habitat threatens countless species with extinction.

Actions to reduce deforestation include sustainable logging, reforestation, and international agreements.

10. Waste Management and Recycling |

Effective waste management reduces pollution and conserves resources. The waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, and finally dispose safely.

Recycling materials like paper, glass, metals, and plastics saves energy and raw materials. For example, recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy needed to extract it from ore.

Organic waste can be composted to produce fertiliser. Sanitary landfills must be well-managed to prevent leachate contaminating groundwater and to collect methane for energy.
