1. Understanding Business Activity |

The purpose of business is to satisfy needs and wants by producing goods and services. Needs are essential for survival, such as food and shelter, while wants are desires that improve quality of life. A business adds value by transforming inputs into outputs that customers are willing to pay for, and the difference between the selling price and the cost of materials is called added value.

Scarcity of resources forces businesses to make choices, leading to opportunity cost – the next best alternative given up. Specialisation occurs when individuals, firms or countries focus on producing a limited range of goods, which raises efficiency but increases dependency on others. The division of labour breaks production into small tasks, raising productivity but risking worker boredom.

2. Classification of Businesses |

Businesses operate in three sectors: primary (extraction of raw materials), secondary (manufacturing) and tertiary (provision of services). In most developed economies, the tertiary sector dominates, while developing economies often have larger primary sectors. De-industrialisation refers to the relative decline of the secondary sector as an economy matures.

A mixed economy combines both private sector and public sector organisations. The private sector aims to make a profit, whereas public sector organisations are owned by the government and provide essential services. Privatisation occurs when state-owned enterprises are sold to the private sector, often to increase efficiency and competition.

3. Enterprise, Business Growth and Size |

An entrepreneur is someone who organises resources, takes risks and innovates to start a new business. Characteristics of successful entrepreneurs include creativity, resilience, confidence and the ability to identify opportunities. A business plan is a document outlining the business idea, market research, financial forecasts and objectives, helping to secure finance and guide early decisions.

Businesses can grow internally (organic growth) by increasing output, opening new branches or launching new products, or externally (integration) by merging with or taking over another business. Horizontal integration involves firms at the same stage of production, vertical integration moves forward or backward in the supply chain, and conglomerate integration brings together unrelated businesses. Measured by number of employees, revenue, capital employed or market share, business size can indicate market power and access to economies of scale.

4. Types of Business Organisation |

Sole traders and partnerships are unincorporated businesses with unlimited liability, meaning owners are personally responsible for all business debts. A sole trader has one owner who keeps all profits but bears all risks. In a partnership, two or more people share capital, responsibilities and profits, usually governed by a deed of partnership. Limited partnerships allow some partners to have limited liability provided they do not manage the business.

Private limited companies (Ltd) and public limited companies (Plc) are incorporated businesses with limited liability, meaning shareholders only risk the amount they invested. A private limited company cannot sell shares to the public, which keeps ownership controlled but limits access to capital. A public limited company can sell shares on a stock exchange, raising large amounts of capital but facing stricter regulations and the risk of takeover. Franchising and joint ventures are other forms of organisation offering rapid expansion with shared risk.

5. Business Objectives and Stakeholder Objectives |

Business objectives are the goals a business aims to achieve. Common objectives include survival, profit maximisation, growth, increasing market share and providing a service to society. Objectives can change over time; for example, a start-up may prioritise survival, while an established firm might pursue market dominance. Social enterprises focus on social and environmental objectives alongside financial sustainability.

Stakeholders are individuals or groups with an interest in a business. Internal stakeholders include owners, managers and employees, while external stakeholders include customers, suppliers, government, banks and the local community. Conflicts often arise because different stakeholders have different objectives; for instance, shareholders want higher dividends, whereas employees may seek higher wages. Effective communication and compromise help manage these conflicts.

6. Motivating Employees |

Motivation is the reason why people work – it can be financial or non-financial. According to Taylor, workers are motivated mainly by money, so piece-rate pay can boost output. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs suggests people are motivated by five levels, from basic needs to self-actualisation. Herzberg identified hygiene factors (e.g. working conditions, salary) that prevent dissatisfaction, and motivators (e.g. recognition, responsibility) that truly drive satisfaction.

Financial methods of motivation include wages, salaries, commission, profit sharing and bonuses. Non-financial methods include job enrichment, job rotation, teamworking, empowerment and training. A motivated workforce tends to be more productive, produces higher quality work and stays longer, reducing labour turnover and absenteeism.

7. Organisation and Management |

An organisational structure defines roles, responsibilities and the chain of command within a business. Tall structures have many layers of hierarchy and narrow spans of control, offering clear promotion paths but slow communication. Flat structures have few layers and wide spans of control, encouraging faster decision-making and better delegation but risking overburdened managers.

Delegation involves giving a subordinate authority to perform a task while retaining overall responsibility. Effective delegation frees up managers’ time, develops employees’ skills and improves motivation. Centralisation keeps decision-making at the top of the hierarchy, ensuring consistency, while decentralisation distributes authority to lower levels, enabling quicker responses to local market conditions.

Leadership styles range from autocratic (leader makes all decisions), democratic (involving employees in decision-making) to laissez-faire (giving employees freedom to decide). The best style depends on the situation, the nature of the task and the skills of the workforce. Trade unions are organisations that represent workers’ interests, negotiating pay and conditions through collective bargaining.

8. Marketing: Identifying and Satisfying Customer Needs |

Marketing is about identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. Market research gathers information about consumers, competitors and market trends. Primary research collects new data first-hand (surveys, interviews, focus groups), while secondary research uses existing data (government reports, internet, sales records). Quantitative data is numerical, while qualitative data describes opinions and feelings.

Market segmentation divides a market into distinct groups of consumers with similar characteristics, such as age, income, location or lifestyle. Targeting enables a business to focus on one or more segments. A product’s market position can be shown on a market map comparing price and quality or other attributes relative to competitors. A niche market is a small, specialised segment, while mass marketing targets the whole market.

9. The Marketing Mix |

The marketing mix, often called the 4Ps, consists of Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Product decisions cover design, quality, features, branding and the product life cycle (introduction, growth, maturity, decline). Extension strategies like updating packaging or finding new markets can prolong the maturity stage.

Pricing strategies include cost-plus pricing (adding a mark-up to cost), competitive pricing (matching rivals), penetration pricing (low initial price to gain share), price skimming (high initial price then lowering), and psychological pricing (e.g. 9.99). The choice of pricing method depends on the product, market conditions and business objectives.

Place refers to how the product reaches the customer. Distribution channels can be direct (manufacturer to consumer) or indirect through wholesalers and retailers. E-commerce and digital platforms are increasingly important. Promotion includes advertising, sales promotions, personal selling, public relations and direct marketing. An integrated mix ensures a consistent message across all channels.

10. Operations Management |

Operations management is concerned with producing goods and services efficiently. Job production makes one-off, customised products; batch production makes groups of identical items; flow production involves continuous large-scale production. Each method suits different types of products and demand levels, and the choice affects unit costs, flexibility and worker motivation.

Lean production aims to minimise waste and improve efficiency. Techniques include just-in-time (JIT) inventory control, which reduces storage costs by ordering materials only when needed, and Kaizen (continuous improvement), which involves small, ongoing changes made by all employees. Quality can be managed through quality control (inspecting at the end) or quality assurance (building quality into every stage). Total Quality Management (TQM) emphasises a company-wide culture of quality and prevention of defects.

Economies of scale are cost advantages gained by increasing the scale of production. They include purchasing economies, technical economies, financial economies, marketing economies and managerial economies. Diseconomies of scale occur when a business grows too large, leading to communication problems, coordination difficulties and low morale, raising average costs.

11. Financial Information and Decision-Making |

Businesses need finance for start-up capital, expansion and working capital. Sources of finance can be short-term (bank overdraft, trade credit, factoring) or long-term (bank loans, issuing shares, debentures, retained profits, venture capital). Internal finance comes from within the business, such as retained profit and sale of assets, while external finance is obtained from outside. The choice depends on the amount needed, the cost, the duration and the level of control the business wishes to retain.

Cash-flow forecasts predict inflows and outflows of cash over a period. A positive net cash flow means more cash comes in than goes out; a negative forecast highlights potential liquidity problems. Profit and cash are not the same – a profitable business can run out of cash if customers delay payment. Managing liquidity is essential for survival.

Income statements (profit and loss accounts) show revenue and costs, revealing whether a business has made a profit or loss. The statement of financial position (balance sheet) presents assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a point in time. Key ratios used in analysis include gross profit margin, net profit margin, return on capital employed (ROCE), current ratio and acid test ratio. Interpretation of these ratios helps stakeholders assess profitability, liquidity and efficiency.

12. External Influences on Business Activity |

Businesses operate within an external environment that includes economic, legal, social, technological and competitive factors. Economic issues such as inflation, unemployment, interest rates and exchange rates affect costs, demand and international competitiveness. The business cycle – boom, recession, slump and recovery – influences strategic decisions like expansion and investment.

Legal controls include employment law (protecting workers’ rights), consumer protection law (ensuring safe, fairly described products) and competition law (preventing anti-competitive practices). Ethical business behaviour considers what is morally right, such as fair trade, environmental sustainability and responsible marketing. Social responsibility involves businesses acting in ways that benefit society beyond legal requirements, building long-term goodwill and customer loyalty.

Globalisation opens up international markets but also increases competition. Multinational companies operate in many countries, bringing investment and jobs but sometimes facing criticism over exploitation and environmental damage. Governments influence business through taxation, subsidies, regulation and exchange rate policy. Exchange rate appreciation makes exports dearer and imports cheaper, while depreciation has the opposite effect, significantly impacting trading businesses.
