📚 IGCSE CIE Mathematics: Introduction to Group Theory | IGCSE CIE

Group theory is a fundamental branch of abstract algebra that investigates sets equipped with a binary operation satisfying four key properties. In IGCSE CIE Mathematics, students often encounter basic group concepts through enrichment tasks, problem-solving, or extension work in algebraic structures. This article provides a detailed, exam-focused breakdown of elementary group theory, presenting each core concept through paired English and Chinese explanations.

1. What is a Group? |

A group is an algebraic structure consisting of a non-empty set G together with a binary operation *, denoted as (G, *), that satisfies four axioms: closure, associativity, identity, and inverses. The operation * must combine any two elements a, b ∈ G to produce a unique element a * b ∈ G.

These four axioms are the foundation: (1) For all a, b ∈ G, a * b ∈ G (closure). (2) For all a, b, c ∈ G, (a * b) * c = a * (b * c) (associativity). (3) There exists an element e ∈ G such that e * a = a * e = a for all a ∈ G (identity). (4) For each a ∈ G, there exists a⁻¹ ∈ G such that a * a⁻¹ = a⁻¹ * a = e (inverse).

这四条公理是基石:(1) 对所有 a, b ∈ G,有 a * b ∈ G(封闭性);(2) 对所有 a, b, c ∈ G,有 (a * b) * c = a * (b * c)(结合律);(3) 存在元素 e ∈ G 使得对所有 a ∈ G 有 e * a = a * e = a(单位元);(4) 对每个 a ∈ G,存在 a⁻¹ ∈ G 使得 a * a⁻¹ = a⁻¹ * a = e(逆元)。

If even one of these conditions fails, the structure is not a group. Checking all four is essential in exam-style questions where you must determine whether (G, *) forms a group.

2. Binary Operations |

A binary operation * on a set G is a rule that assigns to each ordered pair (a, b) of elements in G a unique element a * b, also in G. It is essentially a function from G × G to G. The operation must be well-defined and closed automatically if we are to later consider group axioms separately.

Common operations in group theory include addition (+), multiplication (× or ·), and composition of functions (∘). The notation is abstract, so a * b can represent any of these, as long as the rules are consistent.

To visualise a binary operation on a finite set, we often use a Cayley table. For example, consider G = {e, a} with operation * defined by:

* e a
e e a
a a e

This table shows closure: every entry lies in the set. The operation is fully defined for all pairs, which is the first step towards forming a group.

3. Closure Property |

Closure means that for any a, b ∈ G, the result of the operation a * b is also an element of G. Without closure, we cannot even begin to verify the other group axioms because the operation might produce something outside the set.

For example, the set of even integers under addition is closed: the sum of two even numbers is always even. However, the set of odd integers under addition is not closed, because the sum of two odd numbers is even, which falls outside the set of odd integers.

When solving IGCSE-style questions, always test closure first. If a single counterexample exists (two elements whose “sum” or “product” leaves the set), the structure fails to be a group.

4. Associativity | 结合律

Associativity ensures that when we combine three elements, the grouping does not affect the result: (a * b) * c = a * (b * c) for all a, b, c ∈ G. This property allows us to write a * b * c without parentheses unambiguously.

结合律保证当我们结合三个元素时,分组方式不影响结果:对所有 a, b, c ∈ G,有 (a * b) * c = a * (b * c)。

Many familiar operations are associative: integer addition, multiplication of real numbers, matrix multiplication (though not commutative). Subtraction is not associative: (8 − 3) − 2 = 3, but 8 − (3 − 2) = 7, which differ.

In a group, associativity is taken as an axiom, so it must be verified unless the operation is already known to be associative (e.g., standard addition or multiplication). Checking associativity for a small finite set can be done exhaustively using a Cayley table.

5. Identity Element | 单位元

An identity element e in a group (G, *) satisfies e * a = a * e = a for all a ∈ G. It acts as a “do-nothing” element under the operation. For addition of numbers, the identity is 0; for multiplication, it is 1.

群 (G, *) 中的单位元 e 满足:对所有 a ∈ G,有 e * a = a * e = a。

The identity must be unique. If two elements e and f both satisfy the identity condition, then e = e * f = f, so they are the same. This is a simple but crucial theorem often proved in introductory group theory.

When examining a candidate group, you must find exactly one identity element. For instance, the set of positive integers under addition has no identity element (0 is not positive), so it cannot form a group.

6. Inverse Elements | 逆元

For each element a ∈ G, there must exist an inverse a⁻¹ ∈ G such that a * a⁻¹ = a⁻¹ * a = e. The inverse “undoes” the effect of a. In additive groups, the inverse of a is written as −a (so a + (−a) = 0); in multiplicative groups, it is a⁻¹ (so a × a⁻¹ = 1).

对于 G 中的每个元素 a,必须存在逆元 a⁻¹ ∈ G 使得 a * a⁻¹ = a⁻¹ * a = e。 在加法群中,a 的逆写作 −a(因此 a + (−a) = 0);在乘法群中,逆写作 a⁻¹(因此 a × a⁻¹ = 1)。

Not every set with an operation has inverses for all its elements. The natural numbers ℕ = {1, 2, 3, …} under addition lack inverse elements because there is no positive integer that can be added to 3 to give 0 (the identity would have to be 0, which is not in the set anyway).

Inverses must be unique for each element, a fact that can be proved using associativity and the identity property. In exams, be ready to verify that every element in the given set possesses an inverse within the set.

7. Examples and Non-examples of Groups |

Example 1: (ℤ, +), the set of integers under addition, is a group. Closure: integer + integer = integer. Associativity: yes. Identity: 0. Inverse: for any integer n, the inverse is −n, which is also an integer.

Example 2: (ℝ \ {0}, ×), the set of non-zero real numbers under multiplication, is a group. Identity is 1; the inverse of x is 1/x. 0 is excluded because it has no multiplicative inverse.

Example 3 (finite cyclic group): Consider ℤ₄ = {0, 1, 2, 3} under addition modulo 4. Closure holds, associativity holds, identity is 0, and inverses are 0⁻¹ = 0, 1⁻¹ = 3, 2⁻¹ = 2, 3⁻¹ = 1. This is an abelian group of order 4.

Non-example: (ℤ, −), integers under subtraction. Closure is satisfied, but subtraction is not associative, so it fails the group definition. There is no identity (though 0 acts as a right identity: a − 0 = a, but 0 − a = −a ≠ a).

同时没有真正的单位元(虽然 0 可作为右单位元:a − 0 = a,但 0 − a = −a ≠ a)。

Another non-example: The set of non-negative integers under addition. Identity is 0, but positive integers lack inverses in the set (e.g., no non-negative integer added to 5 gives 0).

8. Abelian Groups |

A group (G, *) is called abelian (or commutative) if the operation is commutative: a * b = b * a for all a, b ∈ G. Many common groups are abelian, such as (ℤ, +), (ℝ, +), and (ℝ \ {0}, ×).

若群 (G, *) 的运算满足交换律:对所有 a, b ∈ G 有 a * b = b * a,则称之为阿贝尔群(或交换群)。

Non-abelian groups also exist – a classic example is the group of invertible 2 × 2 matrices under matrix multiplication, where AB ≠ BA in general. In an IGCSE context, you are most likely to encounter abelian groups, but you should be aware that commutativity is not required by the group axioms.
