Intermolecular Forces: AS Chemistry Key Points |

📚 Intermolecular Forces: AS Chemistry Key Points |

Intermolecular forces (IMFs) are the attractive or repulsive interactions that exist between molecules, and they govern properties such as boiling point, melting point, viscosity, and solubility. For AS Chemistry learners, mastering IMFs is not just about memorising definitions; it is about understanding how subtle differences in molecular structure lead to dramatic changes in physical behaviour. This article breaks down every essential concept, with clear explanations, comparative tables, and typical exam tips.

1. What Are Intermolecular Forces? |

Intermolecular forces are forces of attraction between molecules, as opposed to intramolecular forces (e.g., covalent bonds or ionic bonds) that hold atoms together within a molecule. IMFs are much weaker than covalent bonds, but they are crucial for determining the physical state of a substance at a given temperature. Without IMFs, all molecular substances would be gases.

There are three main types of IMFs in the AS syllabus: London dispersion forces, permanent dipole–dipole forces, and hydrogen bonding. Some forces also include ion–dipole interactions, but these are typically covered in later stages. The strength and type of IMF present depend on the polarity and polarisability of the molecules.

2. Types of Intermolecular Forces – An Overview |

A quick comparison helps you frame the topic before diving into details. IMFs can be classified as relatively weak (London forces) or relatively strong (hydrogen bonds), with permanent dipole–dipole forces falling in between. All molecules experience London forces, but only polar molecules exhibit permanent dipole–dipole interactions, and only molecules with H bonded to N, O, or F can form hydrogen bonds.

Force Type Occurs in Relative Strength
London dispersion All molecules and atoms Weakest (generally)
Permanent dipole–dipole Polar molecules only Medium
Hydrogen bonding Molecules with H–N, H–O, or H–F Strongest (among van der Waals)

Note: The term ‘van der Waals forces’ can refer specifically to London forces or be used as an umbrella term for all IMFs except covalent or ionic bonds. In many AS exam boards, ‘van der Waals’ forces’ means London dispersion forces.

3. London Dispersion Forces (Instantaneous Dipole–Induced Dipole) |

London dispersion forces arise from the movement of electrons within atoms and molecules. At any instant, the electron distribution can become asymmetrical, creating a temporary (instantaneous) dipole. This dipole can induce a dipole in a neighbouring molecule, resulting in an electrostatic attraction between the two. The force is therefore also called an instantaneous dipole–induced dipole interaction.

Larger electron clouds are more easily distorted, or polarised, meaning that the instantaneous dipoles are larger and more frequent. As a result, molecules with greater numbers of electrons or more diffuse electron clouds generally experience stronger London forces. This is why the boiling points of the noble gases increase from helium to radon, and why long-chain alkanes have higher boiling points than their branched isomers.

4. Factors Affecting London Dispersion Forces |

Two key factors determine the strength of London forces: the number of electrons (or molecular mass) and the shape/surface area of the molecule. For molecules with similar structures, the more electrons present, the greater the polarisability and the stronger the dispersion forces. For example, the boiling point of Br₂ (liquid) is higher than that of Cl₂ (gas) because bromine has more electrons.

Molecular shape is equally important. Linear n-alkanes have much higher boiling points than their isomeric branched alkanes because the long, unbranched chains can pack together more closely, allowing for more points of contact and thus stronger overall London forces. Branched molecules are more spherical and have smaller surface area contact, reducing the dispersion forces.

polarisability ∝ number of electrons ∝ molecular mass (for similar types)

5. Permanent Dipole–Dipole Forces |

Permanent dipole–dipole forces exist between polar molecules. A polar molecule has an asymmetrical distribution of charge due to differences in electronegativity between bonded atoms, leading to a permanent dipole (δ⁺ one end, δ⁻ the other). The positive end of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of a neighbouring molecule, establishing an electrostatic force.

Examples include HCl, SO₂, and halogenoalkanes. In propanone (CH₃COCH₃), the C=O bond is highly polar, giving the molecule a significant permanent dipole. These dipole–dipole interactions add to the London forces that are already present. For molecules of comparable molecular mass, polar compounds generally have higher boiling points than non-polar ones due to the extra dipole–dipole attractions.

Molecules like CO₂, however, have polar bonds but are linear and symmetrical, so their dipoles cancel out. Such molecules are non-polar and only exhibit London forces.

6. Hydrogen Bonding – A Special Case |

Hydrogen bonding is not a true bond but an especially strong dipole–dipole interaction. It occurs when a hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom (N, O, or F) and is attracted to a lone pair of electrons on another such atom in a neighbouring molecule. The bond is represented by a dotted line: X–H···Y, where X and Y are N, O, or F.

Hydrogen bonding dramatically elevates boiling points. For example, H₂O has a much higher boiling point than H₂S, even though H₂S has a greater molecular mass. The same trend is seen in HF compared to HCl, and NH₃ compared to PH₃. The anomalous high boiling points of water and ammonia are classic examination evidence for hydrogen bonding.

  • Hydrogen bonding in water is responsible for ice floating, its high surface tension, and its relatively high heat capacity.
  • Each H₂O molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds – two via its hydrogen atoms and two via its oxygen lone pairs.

7. Hydrogen Bonding in Water and DNA | 水和DNA中的氢键

In biology and biochemistry, hydrogen bonding is fundamental. In the DNA double helix, complementary base pairs are held together by hydrogen bonds: adenine (A) pairs with thymine (T) via two H-bonds, and cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G) via three H-bonds. This selective pairing depends on the precise geometry and strength of hydrogen bonds.

In protein folding, hydrogen bonds between backbone amide groups stabilise secondary structures such as α-helices and β-pleated sheets. While AS Chemistry primarily focuses on simple molecular substances, citing these real-world examples can elevate your exam answer and show deeper understanding.

8. Comparing Intermolecular Force Strengths |

A common examination task is to rank substances according to the predominant IMF and predict their boiling points. The general order of strength (from weakest to strongest) is: London forces < permanent dipole–dipole forces < hydrogen bonds. However, size and shape can override this hierarchy: a very large non-polar molecule can have stronger total London forces than a smaller polar molecule’s dipole–dipole attractions.

Substance Mₐᵣ (approx.) Dominant IMF Boiling Point (°C)
Ne (noble gas) 20 London -246
CH₄ (methane) 16 London -162
CH₃Cl (chloromethane) 50 Dipole–dipole + London -24
CH₃OH (methanol) 32 Hydrogen bonding 65
C₈H₁₈ (octane) 114 London (large molecule) 126

Notice that octane, a non-polar molecule, has a higher boiling point than methanol, which can form hydrogen bonds, because the very large number of electrons generates extremely strong London forces. Always consider both the type of IMF and the molecular size when making comparisons.

9. Effect on Boiling Points – Trends and Exceptions |

In a homologous series such as alkanes or alcohols, boiling points increase with chain length because the growing number of electrons strengthens London forces. For branched isomers, the boiling point is lower than that of the straight-chain isomer because of reduced surface contact and thus weaker London forces.

When a molecule can form hydrogen bonds, its boiling point is exceptionally high relative to others of similar molar mass. For example, H₂O (Mᵣ = 18) has a boiling point of 100°C, whereas CH₄ (Mᵣ = 16) boils at -162°C. The sudden spikes in boiling points in Group 16 and Group 17 hydrides (H₂O, HF, NH₃) are classic illustrations.

Be careful: HF has a lower boiling point than H₂O even though the H–F bond is more polar, because each H₂O can form two hydrogen bonds per molecule via its two lone pairs and two H atoms, whereas HF averages fewer H-bonds per molecule due to only one H and limited lone pairs.

10. Effect on Solubility – Like Dissolves Like | 对溶解度的影响 – 相似相溶

Solubility depends on the balance between the energy required to overcome solute–solute and solvent–solvent IMFs and the energy released upon forming new solute–solvent interactions. A general rule is ‘like dissolves like’: polar solutes dissolve in polar solvents (e.g., ethanol in water), and non-polar solutes dissolve in non-polar solvents (e.g., grease in hexane).

When an ionic compound like NaCl dissolves in water, the ion–dipole interactions between Na⁺ / Cl⁻ ions and the polar water molecules compensate for the large lattice energy, making dissolution thermodynamically favourable. Sugar dissolves in water because the many –OH groups can form hydrogen bonds with water.

Non-polar substances such as iodine (I₂) dissolve poorly in water but readily in non-polar organic solvents like CCl₄. In iodine solution with cyclohexane, the London forces between I₂ and solvent are similar to those in the pure substances, so dissolution occurs easily.

11. Common Exam Pitfalls and Misconceptions |

One of the biggest mistakes is confusing intermolecular forces with intramolecular bonds. Hydrogen bonds are not covalent bonds and do not mean a hydrogen atom is bonded to two atoms simultaneously in a single molecule. Always use dotted lines for H-bonds in diagrams.

Another common pitfall is stating that all polar molecules have hydrogen bonding. Only molecules with H attached to N, O, or F can engage in hydrogen bonding. H–C bonds are not sufficiently polar to allow this. Additionally, remember that the strength of London forces can dominate, so never assume a substance with H-bonds will always have a higher boiling point than a large non-polar molecule.

Finally, when explaining boiling point trends, do not say “the covalent bonds break”. IMFs are overcome, not the covalent bonds within a molecule. A common question: “why does I₂ sublime?” The answer is because the London forces between I₂ molecules are relatively weak, so little energy is needed to separate them.

12. Exam Tips and Practice Questions |

In exam questions, always identify the dominant IMF by looking at molecular polarity. Check for H–N, H–O, or H–F bonds first; if present, hydrogen bonding is the primary force. Then check if the molecule is polar by evaluating molecular geometry and bond polarities. Even if a molecule has polar bonds, it might be non-polar overall due to symmetry.

A typical 3-mark question: “Explain why the boiling point of butan-1-ol is higher than that of butane.” Model answer outline:

  • Butan-1-ol has an –OH group and can form hydrogen bonds between molecules, whereas butane is non-polar and only has London forces. Hydrogen bonds are much stronger than London forces, so more energy is required to overcome the IMFs in butan-1-ol, resulting in a higher boiling point.

Always use precise terminology: say “intermolecular forces are overcome” rather than “bonds break”. Practice drawing diagrams showing hydrogen bonds between water and ethanol, and between two DNA base pairs. Being able to sketch these under timed conditions will strengthen your answers.
