📚 A-Level OCR Economics: Mastering National Income | A-Level OCR
Understanding national income is fundamental to mastering macroeconomics at A-Level. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of the key concepts, measurement methods, and exam techniques required for OCR Economics. By the end, you will be equipped to analyse how national income is calculated, its strengths as an indicator, and its limitations.
1. What is National Income? |
National income refers to the total monetary value of all final goods and services produced within an economy over a specific period, usually one year. It is a key indicator of a country’s economic performance and is most commonly represented by Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Economists use national income figures to compare living standards over time and across countries. However, it is crucial to distinguish between national income, GDP, Gross National Product (GNP), and other related measures.
2. The Circular Flow of Income |
The circular flow of income illustrates how money moves between different sectors of the economy. In a simple two-sector model, households provide factors of production to firms and receive income (wages, rent, interest, profit), which they spend on goods and services. This creates a continuous loop.
In an open economy, injections (investment, government spending, exports) add to the flow, while withdrawals or leakages (saving, taxation, imports) reduce it. When injections equal withdrawals, the economy is in equilibrium and national income remains stable.
Understanding this model helps explain how changes in fiscal or monetary policy affect national income. For example, an increase in government spending (an injection) can raise aggregate demand and boost GDP.
3. Three Methods of Measuring GDP | 衡量GDP的三种方法
National income can be measured using three equivalent approaches, based on the circular flow. In theory, they should yield the same figure, though statistical discrepancies often arise.
The output method sums the value added by every firm in the economy. Value added is calculated as the difference between the value of output and the cost of intermediate goods, avoiding double-counting.
The income method totals all incomes earned in production: wages and salaries, rent, interest, and profits. Adjustments are made for depreciation and indirect taxes to arrive at GDP.
The expenditure method aggregates total spending on final goods and services, expressed as C + I + G + (X – M), where C is consumption, I is investment, G is government spending, X is exports, and M is imports.
The table below summarises these three approaches:
| Method / 方法 | What it Measures / 衡量内容 |
|---|---|
| Expenditure / 支出法 | Total spending: C + I + G + (X – M) / 总支出:C + I + G + (X – M) |
4. Nominal vs Real GDP | 名义GDP与实际GDP
Nominal GDP measures the value of output at current market prices, while real GDP adjusts for inflation by using constant prices from a base year. Real GDP is a more accurate indicator of true economic growth because it excludes price level changes.
The relationship is given by the GDP deflator formula:
Real GDP = (Nominal GDP / GDP Deflator) × 100
If nominal GDP rises by 5% but inflation is 3%, real GDP growth is approximately 2%. In OCR exams, you may be asked to calculate real GDP or explain its significance.
5. Gross National Product (GNP) and Other Measures | 国民生产总值(GNP)及其他指标
While GDP measures production within a country’s borders, GNP measures the output produced by a country’s citizens, regardless of location. GNP = GDP + net property income from abroad (income earned by residents overseas minus income earned by foreigners domestically).
Other related measures include Net National Product (NNP = GNP – depreciation) and National Income (NI = NNP – indirect business taxes). For most A-Level purposes, GDP and GNP are the primary focus.
