1. Photosynthesis and Plant Transport |
Plants make their own food through photosynthesis, a process that converts carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using light energy trapped by chlorophyll. The overall word equation is: carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen. In chemical symbols this reads: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂. Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll in chloroplasts, mostly found in palisade mesophyll cells near the upper surface of the leaf.
The glucose produced is used immediately for respiration, converted into starch for storage, or used to make cellulose, proteins and lipids. Mineral ions such as nitrate and magnesium are absorbed from the soil and are essential for building amino acids and chlorophyll. Water and dissolved minerals move up the plant in xylem vessels through the transpiration stream, driven by evaporation from the leaves. Sucrose and amino acids are transported in both directions through phloem sieve tubes in a process called translocation.
2. Human Nutrition and the Digestive System |
A balanced diet supplies the seven classes of nutrient: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, water and dietary fibre. Large insoluble molecules are broken down by mechanical digestion (chewing, churning) and chemical digestion using enzymes. Amylase, produced in the salivary glands and pancreas, breaks starch into maltose. Proteases digest proteins into amino acids, and lipases break fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile, made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid.
Absorption of small, soluble molecules happens mainly in the small intestine, where villi provide a huge surface area. Each villus contains a lacteal for absorbing fatty acids and glycerol, and a dense capillary network for absorbing glucose and amino acids. The absorbed nutrients are carried to cells for respiration, growth and repair. Undigested food passes into the large intestine where water is reabsorbed, and faeces are formed before egestion.
3. Respiration and Gas Exchange |
Aerobic respiration releases energy from glucose using oxygen. The word equation is: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy released). The balanced symbol equation is: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O. This process occurs in mitochondria and supplies ATP for muscle contraction, cell division and maintaining body temperature.
Anaerobic respiration in human muscle cells produces lactic acid and releases a much smaller amount of energy: glucose → lactic acid. In yeast, anaerobic respiration produces ethanol and carbon dioxide (fermentation). The human gas exchange system centres on the alveoli in the lungs – tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries. Inhaled air travels down the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles; diffusion of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out is driven by concentration gradients.
4. Atoms, Elements and the Periodic Table |
All substances are made of atoms. An atom consists of a central nucleus containing protons (positively charged) and neutrons (neutral), surrounded by electrons (negatively charged) arranged in shells. The atomic number is the number of protons and identifies the element; mass number is the total of protons plus neutrons. Electrons fill shells in the sequence 2,8,8… for the first 20 elements, and the electronic configuration determines an element’s chemical behaviour.
The modern Periodic Table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Vertical groups contain elements with the same number of outer-shell electrons and therefore similar chemical properties. Group 1 elements (alkali metals) are soft, highly reactive, and stored under oil; Group 7 elements (halogens) are diatomic non-metals whose reactivity decreases down the group; Group 0 elements (noble gases) are monatomic and unreactive because they have a full outer shell.
5. Chemical Reactions: Metals, Acids and Reactivity |
Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides, which are usually basic. A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its oxide or salt solution. The reactivity series lists metals from most reactive (potassium, sodium) to least reactive (gold, platinum). A common mnemonic helps recall the order: Please Stop Calling Me A Cute Zebra, In Time, Lead, Gold, Platinum.
When a metal reacts with an acid, a salt and hydrogen gas are produced. For example, magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen. The balanced equation is: Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂. Neutralisation occurs when an acid reacts with an alkali to produce salt and water: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O. The rate of a reaction can be increased by raising the temperature, increasing the concentration of a reactant, using a catalyst or increasing the surface area of a solid reactant.
6. Forces, Speed and Motion |
A force is a push or a pull that can change the speed, direction or shape of an object. The unit of force is the newton (N). Resultant force causes acceleration; if the resultant force is zero, the object remains at rest or moves at constant velocity (Newton’s First Law). The relationship force = mass × acceleration (F = m × a) is Newton’s Second Law.
Speed is calculated by dividing distance travelled by time taken. A distance–time graph with a straight diagonal line shows constant speed; a horizontal line shows stationary; a curve indicates acceleration or deceleration. Weight is the gravitational force on an object and is calculated by weight = mass × gravitational field strength (W = m × g, where on Earth g ≈ 9.8 N/kg). Friction opposes motion and can be reduced by lubrication or streamlining.
7. Electricity and Energy Transfers |
Electric current is a flow of electric charge, usually electrons in a metal wire. Current (I) is measured in amperes (A), potential difference (V) in volts (V), and resistance (R) in ohms (Ω). Ohm’s Law states that for a resistor at constant temperature, V = I × R. In series circuits, current is the same everywhere, supply voltage is shared, and total resistance increases as more components are added. In parallel circuits, current splits while voltage across each branch is equal to the supply, and adding branches decreases total resistance.
Energy can be stored in many forms (chemical, kinetic, gravitational potential, thermal, elastic) and is transferred between stores when a change happens. The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. Electrical energy is transferred by moving charges and can be calculated by energy transferred = power × time or E = V × I × t. Sankey diagrams show energy transfers, with waste energy shown as downward arrows.
8. Waves and the Electromagnetic Spectrum |
Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. Transverse waves (e.g. light, water waves) have oscillations perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Longitudinal waves (e.g. sound) have oscillations parallel to the direction of transfer, consisting of compressions and rarefactions. Key wave properties include wavelength, frequency, amplitude and wave speed, linked by the equation: wave speed = frequency × wavelength (v = f × λ).
Light travels in straight lines and can be reflected and refracted. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Refraction occurs when light changes speed as it passes from one medium to another, bending towards the normal if it slows down. White light is a mixture of colours (ROYGBIV) that can be split by a prism; coloured filters absorb all colours except their own, while opaque objects reflect their colour and absorb the rest.
9. Magnetism and Electromagnetism |
A magnet has a north and a south pole; like poles repel, unlike poles attract. Magnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt can be attracted by a magnet and can be made into induced magnets. The Earth itself behaves like a giant bar magnet, which is why a freely suspended magnet aligns north–south. Magnetic field lines show the direction of the magnetic force, running from north to south outside the magnet, and the closer the lines, the stronger the field.
A current flowing through a wire produces a circular magnetic field around it. When the wire is coiled into a solenoid, the magnetic field resembles that of a bar magnet and can be made much stronger by adding an iron core, forming an electromagnet. Electromagnets are temporary – the magnetism disappears when the current is switched off – and are used in relays, electric bells and for lifting scrap iron. The strength of an electromagnet can be increased by raising the current, adding more turns to the coil, or using a larger iron core.
10. Scientific Enquiry and Data Handling |
In a fair test, only the independent variable is deliberately changed; the dependent variable is measured, and all control variables are kept constant. A clear hypothesis predicts the expected relationship. When planning an investigation, you must take repeat readings to spot anomalies and calculate a mean, which improves reliability. Risk assessments identify hazards and describe precautions to minimise risk.
Results are best displayed in tables with headings that include units. Line graphs are used for continuous data, with the independent variable plotted on the x‑axis. A line of best fit may be straight or curved and allows interpolation and extrapolation. When writing a conclusion, you should state what the data show and relate this back to the scientific model. Evaluating the method identifies sources of error and suggests improvements, such as using more precise instruments or controlling variables more tightly.
