📚 Cambridge STEP Mathematics Preparation: Syllabus Breakdown and Past Paper Analysis | 剑桥STEP数学考试备考:考纲解读与真题解析

Cambridge STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) is a challenging mathematics admissions test used by the University of Cambridge and several other top UK universities. It assesses problem-solving skills, depth of understanding, and mathematical creativity beyond standard A-level examinations. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of the STEP syllabus, key topics, and how to approach past paper questions effectively.

1. What is STEP?

STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) is a set of mathematics examinations designed to test the aptitude of students applying to read mathematics, or mathematics-related courses, at the University of Cambridge. It is also widely used by the University of Warwick, Imperial College London, and other leading institutions. There are two main papers: STEP 2 and STEP 3. Both are based on A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, with STEP 3 demanding a broader and deeper knowledge of the Further Mathematics syllabus.

STEP(Sixth Term Examination Paper)是剑桥大学为数学及数学相关专业申请者设立的系列数学能力测试,也被华威大学、帝国理工学院等名校广泛采用。

Candidates typically sit STEP in June of Year 13, and the results form a central part of conditional offers. Achieving a grade 1 or S is often the standard requirement for Cambridge and other top-tier mathematics programmes. Unlike routine A-level problems, STEP questions require genuine insight, logical rigour, and the ability to construct extended arguments.

2. Exam Structure and Scoring |

Each STEP paper consists of 12 questions: 8 pure mathematics, 2 mechanics, and 2 probability/statistics. Candidates must choose exactly 6 questions to answer. There is no restriction on which topics they select, so it is perfectly acceptable to answer, for example, only pure questions, or to mix across domains. The total time allowed is 3 hours, and all questions carry equal weight of 20 marks each, making a maximum raw score of 120.

The final grade is assigned on a scale: S (Outstanding), 1, 2, 3, and U (Unclassified). The grade boundaries vary slightly each year but typically a score around 90–100 marks achieves grade 1, and 110+ might secure an S. The marking scheme rewards fully correct solutions and penalises only major errors; there is no negative marking for attempting a problem. Crucially, examiners look for complete logical reasoning, not just correct answers.

3. Pure Mathematics Syllabus: Core Topics |

The pure mathematics section covers the entirety of A-level Mathematics and most of Further Mathematics. The table below lists the essential topics you must be fluent in for both STEP 2 and STEP 3, with STEP 3 extending certain areas.

Topic 主题
Proof by induction, contradiction, counterexample
Algebra: polynomials, rational functions, modulus, surds, logarithms
Sequences and series, binomial expansion, series of functions
Trigonometry: identities, equations, inverse functions
Coordinate geometry: lines, circles, conics, parametric equations
Differentiation: chain, product, quotient, implicit, parametric
Integration: substitution, by parts, partial fractions, reduction formulae
Differential equations: first order, second order, simple systems
Vectors: dot and cross product, lines, planes, vector geometry
Complex numbers: Argand diagram, de Moivre, roots of unity (STEP 3) 复数:阿干特图、棣莫弗、单位根(STEP 3)
Matrices and linear transformations (STEP 3) 矩阵与线性变换(STEP 3)

While the above topics are foundational, STEP questions rarely test them in isolation. Expect cross-topic synthesis, such as applying calculus to geometry or using algebraic inequalities within a mechanics context. Mastery means not only knowing the facts but being able to deploy them in unfamiliar settings.

4. Mechanics and Statistics in STEP | 力学与统计在STEP中的角色

Mechanics and probability/statistics together account for 4 out of 12 questions. Many candidates overlook them, but a well-prepared student can often find these questions more accessible than some pure mathematics challenges. The syllabus mirrors the A-level Mechanics and Statistics modules.

Kinematics in 1D and 2D, projectiles, motion under variable acceleration
Newton’s laws, connected particles, pulleys
Work, energy, power, conservation of energy
