Chemical Equilibrium — Le Chatelier’s Principle, Kc, and Industrial Applications |

📚 Chemical Equilibrium |

Chemical equilibrium is one of the most fundamental and conceptually rich topics in A-Level Chemistry. It describes the state in which the forward and reverse reactions proceed at exactly the same rate, resulting in constant concentrations of reactants and products. Understanding equilibrium is essential not only for exam success but also for grasping how real-world chemical processes — from industrial ammonia synthesis to the oxygen transport in your blood — are optimized and controlled.

1. What is Dynamic Equilibrium? |

Many students misunderstand equilibrium as a “static” or “frozen” state. In reality, equilibrium is dynamic. Both the forward and reverse reactions are continuously occurring, but because their rates are equal, there is no net change in the concentrations of any species. Imagine two workers transferring water between two buckets at the same rate — the water levels stay the same, even though water is constantly moving.

A chemical system can only reach equilibrium in a closed system — one where no matter can enter or leave. If products are continuously removed (as in an open system), the reverse reaction can never catch up, and equilibrium is never established. For example, the decomposition of calcium carbonate: CaCO₃(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO₂(g) reaches equilibrium only in a sealed container. In an open container, CO₂ escapes and the reaction goes to completion.

Key characteristics of dynamic equilibrium:

  • The forward and reverse reaction rates are equal.
  • Concentrations of all species remain constant (but not necessarily equal).
  • The system must be closed.
  • Equilibrium can be approached from either direction.
  • Macroscopic properties (color, pressure, concentration) appear constant, but microscopically, reactions are ongoing.

2. The Equilibrium Constant Kc | 平衡常数 Kc

For a general reversible reaction at equilibrium:

aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD

The equilibrium constant Kc is defined as:

Kc = [C]ᶜ[D]ᵈ / [A]ᵃ[B]ᵇ

where [X] represents the equilibrium concentration of species X in mol dm⁻³, and the exponents are the stoichiometric coefficients from the balanced equation. The products appear in the numerator and the reactants in the denominator.

Crucially, Kc is only affected by temperature. Changing concentration or pressure does not alter the value of Kc at a given temperature. If temperature changes, Kc changes in a predictable way: for exothermic reactions, increasing temperature decreases Kc (equilibrium shifts left); for endothermic reactions, increasing temperature increases Kc (equilibrium shifts right).

Units of Kc: The units depend on the stoichiometry of the reaction. They are not fixed — you must derive them from the Kc expression. For example:

  • N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g): Kc units = mol⁻² dm⁶
  • H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g): Kc has no units (numerator and denominator powers cancel)
  • PCl₅(g) ⇌ PCl₃(g) + Cl₂(g): Kc units = mol dm⁻³

例如:N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g):Kc 单位 = mol⁻² dm⁶;H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g):Kc 无单位;PCl₅(g) ⇌ PCl₃(g) + Cl₂(g):Kc 单位 = mol dm⁻³。

3. The Magnitude of Kc — What Does It Tell Us? | Kc

The numerical value of Kc provides valuable insight into the position of equilibrium:

Kc Value | Kc 值 Position of Equilibrium | 平衡位置 Interpretation | 解释
Kc >> 1 (e.g., 10¹⁰) Far to the right | 大幅偏右 Reaction goes essentially to completion; products dominate.
Kc ≈ 1 In the middle | 居中 Significant amounts of both reactants and products present.
Kc << 1 (e.g., 10⁻¹⁰) Far to the left | 大幅偏左 Very little product formed; reactants dominate.

Important: A large Kc does NOT tell you anything about the rate of reaction. Thermodynamics and kinetics are separate considerations. A reaction can be highly thermodynamically favorable (large Kc) yet kinetically slow (high activation energy). The reaction between hydrogen and oxygen at room temperature is a classic example: Kc is enormous, but without a spark or catalyst, no reaction is observed.

4. Le Chatelier’s Principle |

Le Chatelier’s Principle is the cornerstone of predicting how a system at equilibrium responds to changes. The principle states:

If a system at dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change in conditions, the equilibrium position shifts to oppose (counteract) the change and re-establish equilibrium.

Think of it as a chemical “push-back”: the system does the opposite of what you do to it. If you add more reactant, the system consumes it by shifting to the right. If you remove product, the system makes more by shifting to the right. If you increase temperature on an exothermic reaction, the system shifts left to absorb the extra heat.

Important caveat: Le Chatelier’s Principle explains the direction of shift but not the magnitude. It is a qualitative tool, not a quantitative one. For precise predictions about how concentrations change, you must use Kc calculations.

5. Effect of Concentration Changes |

Adding or removing a reactant or product shifts the equilibrium position, but Kc remains unchanged (at constant temperature).

Adding a reactant: The system shifts to the right (forward reaction favored) to consume the extra reactant. More product is formed. For example, in the reaction Fe³⁺(aq) + SCN⁻(aq) ⇌ FeSCN²⁺(aq), adding more Fe³⁺ causes the solution to turn a deeper blood-red color as more FeSCN²⁺ forms.

Removing a product: The system shifts to the right to replace the lost product. This is the principle behind many industrial processes where products are continuously removed to drive the equilibrium forward and maximize yield.

Key exam tip: When a question asks what happens to Kc after a concentration change, the answer is always: “Kc remains unchanged because temperature is constant.” Kc only changes when temperature changes.

6. Effect of Temperature Changes |

Temperature is the only factor that changes the value of Kc. The direction of shift depends on whether the forward reaction is exothermic or endothermic:

Shifts LEFT (Kc decreases)
Shifts RIGHT (Kc increases)
Shifts RIGHT (Kc increases)
Shifts LEFT (Kc decreases)

The reasoning: Treat heat as a chemical species. For an exothermic reaction, write “heat” on the product side: Reactants ⇌ Products + heat. Increasing temperature is like adding “heat” — the system shifts left to consume it. For an endothermic reaction, write “heat” on the reactant side: Reactants + heat ⇌ Products. Increasing temperature shifts the equilibrium right.

7. Effect of Pressure Changes |

Pressure changes only affect equilibria involving gases where there is a difference in the total number of moles of gas between the two sides of the equation.

Increasing pressure: The system shifts to the side with fewer moles of gas to reduce the pressure.

Decreasing pressure: The system shifts to the side with more moles of gas to increase the pressure.

Examples:

  • N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g): 4 moles of gas on the left, 2 on the right. Increased pressure shifts equilibrium RIGHT (favors NH₃ production).
  • H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g): 2 moles of gas on both sides. Pressure has no effect on the equilibrium position. |
  • PCl₅(g) ⇌ PCl₃(g) + Cl₂(g): 1 mole on the left, 2 moles on the right. Increased pressure shifts equilibrium LEFT. |

Kc is unaffected by pressure changes — only temperature changes Kc. Pressure changes shift the equilibrium position but not the equilibrium constant.

8. Effect of Catalysts |

A common misconception is that catalysts shift the equilibrium position. They do not. A catalyst increases the rate of both the forward and reverse reactions equally by providing an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy. This means:

  • The equilibrium position is unchanged.
  • The value of Kc is unchanged.
  • The system reaches equilibrium faster.

In industry, catalysts are invaluable not because they change the yield, but because they allow equilibrium to be reached much faster, dramatically improving the rate of production. The iron catalyst in the Haber process does not increase the percentage yield of ammonia — it simply gets you to that equilibrium yield in seconds rather than years.

9. Industrial Application: The Haber Process |

The Haber process for ammonia synthesis is the classic A-Level example of applying equilibrium principles to industrial optimization:

Temperature | 温度 Low T favors the exothermic forward reaction → higher yield. 400–450°C: compromise between yield and rate. Too low and the reaction is too slow.
Pressure | 压力 High P favors side with fewer moles (products) → higher yield. 200 atm: compromise between yield and cost (high-pressure equipment is expensive and dangerous).
Iron catalyst: no effect on yield or Kc. Speeds up attainment of equilibrium dramatically.

Under these conditions, the yield is approximately 15–20% per pass. The unreacted N₂ and H₂ are recycled, and the ammonia is continuously liquefied and removed. This continuous removal of product shifts the equilibrium further to the right, and overall conversion approaches 97–98%.

One of the most practical skills in this topic is calculating equilibrium concentrations and Kc values using an ICE table (Initial, Change, Equilibrium). The approach is systematic and examiners expect you to show your working clearly.

Worked Example: For the reaction H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g), 1.00 mol of H₂ and 1.00 mol of I₂ are placed in a 2.00 dm³ vessel at 440°C. At equilibrium, 0.40 mol of H₂ remains. Calculate Kc.

H₂ I₂ HI
Initial (mol) |
Change (mol) |
Equilibrium (mol) |
0.20 mol dm⁻³ 0.20 mol dm⁻³ 0.60 mol dm⁻³

Kc = [HI]² / ([H₂][I₂]) = (0.60)² / (0.20 × 0.20) = 0.36 / 0.04 = 9.0

The units of Kc cancel out in this case (both numerator and denominator have mol² dm⁻⁶).

Common mistake: Forgetting to divide moles by volume to get concentrations before plugging into the Kc expression. The equilibrium constant uses concentrations, not moles!

11. Kp — Equilibrium Constant for Gaseous Systems | Kp —

When all species in an equilibrium are gases, it is often more convenient to use Kp, the equilibrium constant expressed in terms of partial pressures rather than concentrations. Partial pressure is the pressure a particular gas would exert if it alone occupied the entire volume.

Partial pressure of gas A: p(A) = (moles of A / total moles) × total pressure = mole fraction × P_total

For the reaction aA(g) + bB(g) ⇌ cC(g) + dD(g): Kp = [p(C)]ᶜ[p(D)]ᵈ / [p(A)]ᵃ[p(B)]ᵇ

The units of Kp are typically atm, Pa, or kPa raised to the appropriate power, derived from the stoichiometry. Like Kc, Kp is only affected by temperature.

Key relationship: The link between Kc and Kp can be derived: Kp = Kc(RT)^(Δn), where Δn = (total moles of gaseous products) − (total moles of gaseous reactants), R is the gas constant (0.0821 L atm mol⁻¹ K⁻¹ or 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹), and T is in Kelvin.

12. Summary and Key Takeaways |

Factor | 因素 Effect on Equilibrium Position | 对平衡位置的影响 Effect on Kc | 对 Kc 的影响
Concentration | 浓度 Shifts to oppose the change | 移动以对抗变化 No change | 不变
Pressure (gases only) | 压力(仅气体) Shifts to side with fewer/more gas moles | 移向气体摩尔数更少/更多的一侧 No change | 不变
Temperature | 温度 Shifts in endothermic direction when heated | 加热时向吸热方向移动 CHANGES | 会改变
Catalyst | 催化剂 No change | 不变 No change | 不变

Top 5 things examiners love to test:

  1. Kc only changes with temperature — say this explicitly in every relevant answer. | Kc
  2. Catalysts affect rate, not position — do not fall into this trap. |
  3. Always convert moles to concentrations before calculating Kc.
  4. Units of Kc are not fixed — derive them each time from the Kc expression.
  5. When pressure has no effect on position, state that the number of gaseous moles is equal on both sides. |

Mastering chemical equilibrium requires practice with calculations, a clear understanding of Le Chatelier’s Principle, and the ability to reason about industrial trade-offs. Approach each problem systematically, always identify what is changing (concentration, pressure, or temperature), and then apply the appropriate principle. Good luck with your studies!
