1. Luminosity and Apparent Brightness |

Luminosity L is the total power radiated by a star into space, measured in watts. The apparent brightness F (or flux) is the power received per unit area at Earth. For a star radiating isotropically, the two are related by the inverse-square law: F = L / (4π d²), where d is the distance from Earth to the star. Astronomers often use this relationship to compare the brightness of stars at known distances.

F = L / (4π d²)

2. Magnitude Scale: Apparent and Absolute |

Apparent magnitude m is a logarithmic measure of how bright a star appears from Earth. A difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a brightness ratio of exactly 100. Absolute magnitude M is defined as the apparent magnitude the star would have if it were placed at the standard distance of 10 parsecs. The distance modulus equation links m, M, and distance d: m – M = 5 log₁₀(d/10), with d in parsecs.

m – M = 5 log₁₀(d / 10)

3. Blackbody Radiation and Stellar Temperature |

Stars behave approximately as blackbody radiators. Wien’s displacement law tells us that the peak wavelength λₘₐₓ is inversely proportional to the surface temperature T: λₘₐₓ T = 2.9 × 10⁻³ m K. Hotter stars peak at shorter (bluer) wavelengths, while cooler stars peak at longer (redder) wavelengths. The Stefan–Boltzmann law connects luminosity, radius, and temperature: L = 4πR² σ T⁴, where σ is the Stefan–Boltzmann constant. Using this, we can estimate a star’s radius if we know its luminosity and temperature.

λₘₐₓ T = 2.9 × 10⁻³ m K

L = 4πR² σ T⁴

4. Distance Measurement: Parallax and Parsec |

The trigonometric parallax method uses the apparent shift of a nearby star against distant background stars as Earth orbits the Sun. The parallax angle p (in arcseconds) is half the total annual shift. Distance d in parsecs is given by d = 1 / p. One parsec is the distance at which 1 AU subtends an angle of 1 arcsecond (≈ 3.09 × 10¹⁶ m). For greater distances, standard candles such as Cepheid variables are essential. Their period-luminosity relation yields absolute magnitude, from which the distance modulus gives d.
