1. Place Value and Number Systems |

The value of a digit depends entirely on its position in a number. For example, in 3,748 the ‘3’ represents three thousands (3,000), not three ones. Understanding place value columns – units, tens, hundreds, thousands – is the first step to reading, writing and ordering large numbers correctly.

When answering questions on comparing numbers, always begin with the leftmost digit. If two numbers have the same number of digits, compare them place by place from the highest value column downwards. The symbol ‘>’ means ‘is greater than’ and ‘<' means 'is less than', for instance 5,902 > 5,812.

Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000 is a useful estimation skill. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to: if it is 5 or more, round up; if it is 4 or less, round down. So 674 rounded to the nearest 10 becomes 670, but to the nearest 100 it becomes 700.

2. Addition and Subtraction Strategies |

Column addition and subtraction are the backbone of written calculations. Align digits by place value and always start from the units column. When the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, you need to ‘borrow’ from the next left column, converting one higher unit into ten of the current column.

Mental strategies are equally important: partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and units can speed up calculations. For 247 + 36, think 247 + 30 = 277, then 277 + 6 = 283. Checking answers using inverse operations – using subtraction to check addition and vice versa – avoids careless mistakes.

Word problems often require identifying keywords: ‘altogether’ or ‘total’ suggest addition; ‘difference’ or ‘how many left’ indicate subtraction. Always show your working clearly, as it helps you trace errors and earns method marks in assessments.

3. Multiplication and Division |

Multiplication can be seen as repeated addition, and division as repeated subtraction or sharing equally. Every KS3 student should be fluent in times tables up to 12 × 12, as they form the building blocks for larger multiplications, fractions and algebra.

The grid method breaks numbers into their place value parts, multiplying each part separately and then summing the results. For 34 × 6, split 34 into 30 and 4: 30 × 6 = 180, 4 × 6 = 24, total 204. The formal short multiplication and division algorithms then build neatly on this understanding.

When dividing, remainders can be written as whole numbers, fractions or decimals. For example, 50 ÷ 3 = 16 r 2, or 16 ⅔, or approximately 16.67. Knowing the connection between multiplication and division allows you to use fact families: from 6 × 7 = 42, you also know 42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7.

4. Fractions Basics |

A fraction represents a part of a whole. The numerator (top number) tells how many parts we have; the denominator (bottom number) tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into. Equivalent fractions are found by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same non‑zero number: ½ = ²⁄₄ = ⁴⁄₈.

To simplify a fraction, divide both top and bottom by their highest common factor (HCF). For ¹²⁄₁₈, the HCF of 12 and 18 is 6, so divide by 6 to get ⅔. Comparing fractions requires a common denominator; convert each fraction to an equivalent with the same denominator, then compare the numerators.

Mixed numbers and improper fractions are interchangeable. To change 2 ¾ to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator (2 × 4 = 8), add the numerator (8 + 3 = 11) and place over the denominator → ¹¹⁄₄. The reverse gives the mixed number.

5. Decimals and Percentages |

Decimals are another way of writing fractions with denominators that are powers of ten. The first column after the decimal point is tenths, the second is hundredths, and the third is thousandths. For instance, 0.7 means 7 tenths, and 0.25 means 25 hundredths.

Multiplying a decimal by 10, 100 or 1,000 shifts the digits to the left; dividing shifts them to the right. When adding or subtracting decimals, you must align the decimal points. So 3.6 + 0.42 becomes 3.60 + 0.42, giving 4.02, not 3.102 if misaligned.

Percent means ‘out of 100’. To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100 (e.g. 45% = 0.45). To write a decimal as a percentage, multiply by 100 (0.8 = 80%). Finding a percentage of an amount involves multiplying the amount by the percentage as a decimal: 20% of 60 = 0.20 × 60 = 12.

6. Introduction to Algebra |

Algebra uses letters to stand for unknown numbers or variables. An expression like 3a + 2 means ‘3 times a, plus 2’. The multiplication sign is usually omitted: 4 × y is written as 4y. The number in front of a letter is called the coefficient.

Like terms have exactly the same variable raised to the same power. You can simplify expressions by collecting like terms: 5x + 2x = 7x, and 3y + 4y – y = 6y. This is similar to adding apples and apples – you cannot combine unlike terms such as 3a + 2b.

Substituting numbers into expressions means replacing the letter with its given value and calculating. If a = 4 and b = 3, then 2a + 5b = 2×4 + 5×3 = 8 + 15 = 23. Always use brackets and follow the order of operations (BIDMAS/BODMAS).

务必使用括号并遵循运算顺序(BIDMAS/BODMAS 法则)。

7. Solving Equations | 解方程

An equation states that two expressions are equal, using an equals sign. The goal is to find the value of the unknown that makes the statement true. Simple equations in Book 7S often involve one step: x + 5 = 12, so x = 12 – 5 = 7.

The balance method keeps the equation equal by doing the same operation to both sides. If 3y = 15, divide both sides by 3 to get y = 5. Always check your solution by substituting it back into the original equation.

Two‑step equations require undoing two operations. For 2m + 3 = 11, first subtract 3 from both sides (2m = 8), then divide by 2 (m = 4). Writing each step clearly and keeping the equals signs aligned reduces the risk of mistakes.

8. Geometry: Lines and Angles |

An angle is formed by two rays meeting at a vertex and is measured in degrees (°). Acute angles are less than 90°, right angles are exactly 90°, obtuse angles are between 90° and 180°, and reflex angles are between 180° and 360°.

Angles on a straight line add up to 180°, and angles around a point sum to 360°. Vertically opposite angles are equal. When a straight line crosses two parallel lines, alternate angles are equal and corresponding angles are equal – properties regularly tested in KS3 geometry.

To find a missing angle, identify the relevant angle facts first, set up a simple equation, then solve. For example, if one angle on a straight line is 67°, the adjacent angle is 180° – 67° = 113°. Drawing diagrams and labelling known angles helps you stay organised.

9. Perimeter, Area and Volume |

Perimeter is the total distance around a 2D shape. For a rectangle, perimeter = 2 × (length + width). Make sure all sides are in the same unit before adding. Compound shapes can often be split into smaller rectangles; add the exposed outer edges, not the internal lines.

Area measures the amount of surface inside a shape. Rectangle area = length × width. The units are square units (e.g. cm², m²). For a right‑angled triangle, area = ½ × base × height. Counting squares on a grid can help visualise irregular shapes.

Volume measures the space inside a 3D solid. The volume of a cuboid = length × width × height, with cubic units (e.g. cm³). If you know the area of the cross‑section, multiply it by the length. Converting between units like cm³ and ml (1 cm³ = 1 ml) is a common exam skill.

10. Data Handling and Averages |

The mean (average) is found by adding all values together and dividing by the number of values. The median is the middle value when the data are ordered; if there are two middle numbers, the median is their average. The mode is the value that appears most often, and the range is the difference between the largest and smallest values.

When reading bar charts and pictograms, check the scale carefully. A bar chart must have equally spaced bars, and the height or length represents frequency. In pictograms, one picture may represent 2 or 5 or 10 items – always read the key. Tally charts (using |||| with a diagonal for five) organise raw data before graphing.

Interpreting data involves more than calculating averages – you must compare sets and explain what the numbers mean. For instance, a higher mean but smaller range suggests more consistent high performance. Using the correct vocabulary (more/less varied, typical value) earns better marks in written answers.
