📚 IGCSE CIE Economics Mind Map Quick Revision | IGCSE CIE
A mind map is a powerful tool to connect key concepts and see the big picture of the IGCSE CIE Economics syllabus. This article translates the mind map approach into a bilingual revision guide, grouping essential ideas into logical branches. Each section follows a ‘concept first, explanation next’ structure to help you memorise relationships between topics and recall them quickly in the exam.
1. The Basic Economic Problem |
Economics begins with scarcity: unlimited wants versus limited resources. This fundamental condition forces every society to answer three key questions – what to produce, how to produce, and for whom to produce. The concepts of needs, wants, free goods and economic goods all stem from this central problem.
Opportunity cost is the next essential building block. Whenever a choice is made, the next best alternative forgone is the opportunity cost. This idea applies to consumers, firms and governments, and it links directly to the production possibility curve (PPC), which illustrates trade‑offs, efficiency and economic growth.
- Scarcity → choice → opportunity cost
- PPC: points inside = inefficient, on curve = efficient, outside = unattainable without growth
2. Allocation of Resources |
Resource allocation answers the three basic questions through different economic systems. The main types are the market economy, the planned (command) economy and the mixed economy. CIE candidates need to know how each system coordinates decisions using price signals, government directives or a combination of both.
The price mechanism in a market economy relies on demand and supply. Demand shows the willingness and ability to buy at different prices; supply shows the willingness and ability to sell. The interaction determines equilibrium price and quantity. Movements along the curves reflect changes in price, while shifts are caused by non‑price determinants – such as income, tastes, costs of production or technology.
- Law of Demand: price ↑ → quantity demanded ↓ (contraction); price ↓ → quantity demanded ↑ (extension)
- Law of Supply: price ↑ → quantity supplied ↑; price ↓ → quantity supplied ↓
3. Microeconomic Decision Makers: Households |
Households are one of the main economic agents. They supply factors of production – labour, land, capital and enterprise – and receive income in return: wages, rent, interest and profit. Their spending decisions create the demand for goods and services in product markets.
Understanding household behaviour means being able to analyse factors that influence spending, saving and borrowing. Changes in disposable income, interest rates, consumer confidence and wealth all affect the level of consumption. The marginal propensity to consume (MPC) and the simple multiplier effect are introduced here to link micro decisions to macro outcomes.
Multiplier k = 1 ÷ (1 − MPC)
乘数 k = 1 ÷ (1 − MPC)
4. Microeconomic Decision Makers: Firms |
Firms combine factors of production to produce goods and services. Their objectives may range from profit maximisation to growth, survival or social responsibility. The production process is usually split into the short run and the long run, giving rise to the law of diminishing returns and economies of scale.
Costs and revenue classifications are central. Total cost (TC) = total fixed cost (TFC) + total variable cost (TVC). Average costs (ATC, AVC, AFC) and marginal cost (MC) need to be linked with total revenue (TR = price × quantity) and marginal revenue. Profit maximisation occurs where MC = MR. Break‑even happens where TR = TC.
- Short run: at least one fixed factor → law of diminishing returns
- Long run: all factors variable → internal and external economies/diseconomies of scale
5. Market Structures |
The level of competition in a market influences price and output decisions. CIE IGCSE covers perfect competition in theory, though the focus is on real‑world structures such as monopoly, oligopoly and monopolistic competition. Key characteristics include the number of firms, type of product, barriers to entry and control over price.
Perfect competition features many small firms, homogeneous products, no barriers to entry or exit, and firms as price takers. At the other extreme, a pure monopoly has a single seller, strong barriers and significant price‑making power. Between them, monopolistic competition combines product differentiation with many sellers, while oligopoly shows a few interdependent firms that may use non‑price competition and face the risk of collusion.
6. Labour Market and Trade Unions |
The labour market operates where households supply labour and firms demand it. The wage rate acts as the price of labour. Supply of labour depends on factors like the size of the working population, migration, education and non‑wage benefits; demand for labour is derived from the demand for the goods and services workers produce.
Trade unions are organisations that aim to improve wages and working conditions for their members. They can influence the labour market through collective bargaining, by restricting supply or by supporting higher productivity. CIE learners should be able to analyse the impact of union activity on wages, employment and the wider economy, using supply‑and‑demand diagrams.
7. Role of Government in Microeconomy |
Governments intervene in markets to correct market failures, redistribute income and provide public goods. Market failures arise from externalities, public goods, information gaps, monopoly power and factor immobility. Policy tools include taxation, subsidies, price controls, regulation and direct provision of goods and services.
Externalities represent the spillover effects on third parties not directly involved in a transaction. A negative externality (e.g. pollution) causes social cost to exceed private cost; a positive externality (e.g. vaccination) causes social benefit to exceed private benefit. Diagrammatically, welfare loss or gain triangles are used to show misallocation of resources, corrected by Pigouvian taxes or subsidies.
Public goods are non‑rival and non‑excludable, which means the free market will under‑provide them due to the free‑rider problem. Hence governments often finance and provide goods like street lighting and national defence.
8. Macroeconomic Aims and Indicators |
Macroeconomic management targets four main goals: economic growth, full employment/low unemployment, stable prices (low inflation) and a satisfactory balance of payments on current account. These are monitored by a set of indicators including GDP, the unemployment rate, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the current account balance.
Gross Domestic Product measures the total value of output produced within a country over a period. Real GDP strips out the effects of inflation, giving a truer picture of growth. The unemployment rate measures the proportion of the labour force actively seeking work but unable to find it. Inflation, measured by the CPI, tracks changes in the price of a basket of typical consumer goods. Economic growth represents an increase in the productive potential of the economy, shown by an outward shift of the PPC or a rightward shift of the long‑run aggregate supply curve.
9. Fiscal and Monetary Policy |
Fiscal policy involves government spending and taxation. It can be expansionary (higher spending, lower taxes) to boost aggregate demand during a recession, or contractionary to cool an overheating economy. The budget balance – surplus, deficit or balanced – is an important indicator of the fiscal stance.
Monetary policy is operated by a central bank and mainly works through interest rates, the money supply and the exchange rate. Lower interest rates encourage borrowing and spending, shifting aggregate demand right. Higher rates do the opposite. CIE also introduces supply‑side policies, which aim to increase the productive capacity of the economy by improving labour skills, cutting business taxes or deregulating markets.
- Direct tax: on income and wealth (e.g. income tax, corporation tax).
- Indirect tax: on spending (e.g. VAT, excise duties).
10. Economic Growth and Development |
Economic growth refers to a quantitative increase in national output, typically measured by real GDP per capita. Economic development is a broader concept encompassing improvements in living standards, health, education, environmental quality and political freedom. CIE distinguishes between the two and expects candidates to evaluate indicators like the Human Development Index (HDI).
Barriers to development include primary product dependency, low savings and investment, poor infrastructure, political instability and a large informal sector. Strategies to promote development involve investment in human capital, diversification of the economy, foreign aid, encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI) and microfinance schemes. The sustainability of growth is also a key theme.
11. International Trade and Globalisation |
International trade allows countries to specialise according to comparative advantage and enjoy a greater variety of goods and services at lower prices. The principle of comparative advantage states that a country should specialise in producing goods where it has the lowest opportunity cost, even if it has no absolute advantage.
Protectionism uses tools such as tariffs, quotas, subsidies to domestic producers and embargoes to shield domestic industries from foreign competition. Arguments for protection include protecting infant industries, preventing dumping, preserving employment and maintaining strategic industries. However, protection typically raises prices, reduces consumer choice and may provoke retaliation.
Globalisation is the increasing economic integration between countries, driven by trade liberalisation, technology and the growth of multinational corporations (MNCs). It brings benefits like technology transfer and higher growth, but also risks such as greater inequality and environmental damage.
12. Exchange Rates and Balance of Payments |
An exchange rate is the price of one currency in terms of another. It can be determined by market forces (floating), fixed by a government or managed through a hybrid system. A depreciation makes exports cheaper and imports dearer; an appreciation has the opposite effect.
The balance of payments consists of the current account, the capital and financial account, and the balancing item. CIE concentrates on the current account, which records trade in goods (visible trade), trade in services (invisible trade), primary income and secondary income. A current account deficit means a country is spending more abroad than it is earning, while a surplus indicates the reverse.
Policies to correct a persistent current account deficit include expenditure‑switching policies (tariffs, devaluation) and expenditure‑reducing policies (contractory fiscal or monetary policy). Supply‑side improvements can also boost export competitiveness over the long term.
