2. Enzymes and Biological Molecules |

Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein. They speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy and remain unchanged at the end of the reaction.

The lock-and-key model describes how the substrate fits into the active site of its specific enzyme. A change in the shape of the active site, for example due to high temperature or extreme pH, leads to denaturation and loss of function.

4. Atoms, Ions and the Periodic Table |

Atoms consist of protons (positive, mass 1), neutrons (neutral, mass 1) and electrons (negative, negligible mass). The atomic number is the proton count; the mass number is protons plus neutrons.

Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same chemical properties but different physical properties such as mass.

Ions form when atoms lose or gain electrons. Metals form cations (positive), e.g. Na⁺; non-metals form anions (negative), e.g. Cl⁻. The charge can be predicted from the group number of the element.

In the Periodic Table, group number indicates the number of outer-shell electrons, period number indicates the number of shells. Elements in the same group have similar chemical behaviour.

5. Chemical Bonding and Structure |

Ionic bonding involves the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal, forming a giant ionic lattice held together by strong electrostatic forces. Ionic compounds have high melting points and conduct electricity when molten or dissolved.

Covalent bonding involves the sharing of electron pairs between non-metal atoms. Simple molecular substances like CO₂ and H₂O have low melting points and do not conduct electricity.

Giant covalent structures, such as diamond (each carbon bonds to four others) and graphite (each carbon bonds to three others with delocalised electrons), have very high melting points. Graphite conducts electricity because of its free electrons.

Metallic bonding consists of positive metal ions in a ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons. This explains why metals are malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and electricity.

6. Quantitative Chemistry |

The relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the average mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12th of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. The relative formula mass (Mᵣ) is the sum of the Aᵣ values in a compound.

7. Motion and Forces |

Speed and velocity are calculated as distance (or displacement) ÷ time. Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity: a = (v – u) ÷ t. Deceleration is negative acceleration.

The area under a speed-time graph represents distance travelled; the gradient represents acceleration. A flat section indicates constant speed.

Newton’s first law states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion unless an external resultant force acts. Newton’s second law is F = m × a.

Forces are vector quantities, meaning they have both magnitude and direction. If two forces act in opposite directions, the resultant force is the difference between them.

8. Electricity and Energy Transfers |

Ohm’s law links potential difference, current and resistance: V = I × R. In a series circuit, current is the same everywhere and total resistance is the sum of individual resistances.

10. Planning, Analysis and Evaluation of Investigations |

When planning an investigation, identify the independent variable (the one you change), the dependent variable (the one you measure) and control variables (those kept constant for a fair test).

A hypothesis should be a clear, testable statement that predicts the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Risk assessments must be completed before starting practical work.

Results are best presented in a table with headings that include units. Graphs should have labelled axes, appropriate scales and a line of best fit. Anomalous points should be circled but not included in the line.

When evaluating, comment on precision (closeness of repeated results), accuracy (how close to the true value) and reliability. Identify sources of error and suggest improvements such as using more precise instruments or gathering more repeats.
