1. Earth’s Internal Structure |

The Earth is made up of four main layers: the solid inner core, the liquid outer core, the mantle, and the thin crust. The inner core is composed of solid iron and nickel, with temperatures reaching about 5500 °C. The outer core is liquid iron and nickel, and its movement generates Earth’s magnetic field.

The mantle is the thickest layer, made of semi‑solid rock that flows very slowly over geological time. The crust is the outermost layer, which is broken into tectonic plates. Oceanic crust is thinner and denser than continental crust.

Seismic waves from earthquakes provide evidence for this layered structure. P‑waves can travel through both solids and liquids, but S‑waves can only travel through solids. The S‑wave shadow zone reveals the liquid outer core.

2. Plate Tectonics |

The Earth’s lithosphere is divided into large plates that float on the semi‑fluid asthenosphere. Convection currents in the mantle drive the movement of these plates. Plate boundaries can be constructive (divergent), destructive (convergent), or conservative (transform).

At constructive boundaries, plates move apart and magma rises to form new crust, such as at the Mid‑Atlantic Ridge. At destructive boundaries, an oceanic plate is subducted under a continental plate, causing volcanic activity and mountain building. At conservative boundaries, plates slide past each other, causing earthquakes along faults like the San Andreas Fault.

Earthquakes and volcanoes are concentrated along plate boundaries. The magnitude of earthquakes is measured using the Richter scale, and the effects are described by the Mercalli intensity scale.

3. The Rock Cycle |

Rocks on Earth are constantly being formed, broken down, and reformed in a continuous process called the rock cycle. There are three main rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Igneous rocks form when magma cools and solidifies. Intrusive igneous rocks, such as granite, cool slowly underground and have large crystals. Extrusive igneous rocks, such as basalt, cool quickly on the surface and have small crystals.

Sedimentary rocks form from layers of sediment compacted and cemented together over time. Examples include sandstone and limestone. Fossils are often found in sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure, without melting. Marble (from limestone) and slate (from shale) are common examples.

Processes such as weathering, erosion, transport, deposition, burial, and melting connect the three rock types in a cycle.

4. Our Solar System |

The Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The four inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) are rocky and small. The four outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) are gas giants or ice giants, much larger and composed mainly of hydrogen, helium, and ices.

The asteroid belt lies between Mars and Jupiter, containing rocky remnants from the early Solar System. Comets are icy bodies that develop glowing comas and tails when they approach the Sun.

All planets orbit the Sun in elliptical orbits, as described by Kepler’s laws. The force of gravity from the Sun keeps the planets in their orbits.

5. Orbits and Gravitational Force |

An orbit is the result of a perfect balance between the forward motion of a planet or satellite and the pull of gravity from the central body. The gravitational force provides the centripetal force needed to keep an object in a curved path.

For a satellite in a stable circular orbit, the speed depends on the mass of the central object and the orbital radius. The closer a planet is to the Sun, the faster it must travel to stay in orbit. This is why Mercury has the shortest orbital period.

Artificial satellites are used for communication, weather monitoring, GPS navigation, and scientific research. Geostationary satellites orbit at the same rate that the Earth rotates, so they stay fixed above one point on the equator.

6. The Sun – A Typical Star |

The Sun is a main sequence star powered by nuclear fusion in its core. Hydrogen nuclei fuse to form helium, releasing enormous amounts of energy according to E = mc². This energy travels outward and eventually radiates into space as light and heat.

The Sun’s atmosphere has three layers: the photosphere (the visible surface), the chromosphere, and the corona. Sunspots are cooler, darker regions on the photosphere caused by magnetic activity. Solar flares and coronal mass ejections can affect Earth’s magnetosphere and cause auroras.

The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old and is expected to remain stable for another 5 billion years before evolving into a red giant.

7. Life Cycle of Stars |

Stars form from vast clouds of gas and dust called nebulae. Gravity pulls the material together, forming a protostar. When the core becomes hot and dense enough, nuclear fusion ignites, and the star enters the main sequence stage, where it spends most of its life.

The fate of a star depends on its initial mass. For a low‑mass star like the Sun, the path is: main sequence → red giant → planetary nebula → white dwarf. The white dwarf eventually cools and fades into a black dwarf.

For a high‑mass star (much more massive than the Sun), the sequence is: main sequence → red supergiant → supernova explosion. After the supernova, the core may collapse into a neutron star. If the remnant core is extremely massive, gravity overcomes all forces and forms a black hole.

8. Evidence for the Big Bang |

The Big Bang theory states that the Universe began about 13.8 billion years ago from a single, extremely hot and dense point. Since then, space itself has been expanding. Two major pieces of evidence support this theory: red‑shift of galaxies and cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB).

When a galaxy moves away from us, the light it emits is stretched to longer wavelengths — a phenomenon called red‑shift. Almost all galaxies show red‑shift in their spectra, meaning they are moving away from us. More distant galaxies have greater red‑shifts, indicating that the Universe is expanding uniformly.

The CMB is the remnant heat from the Big Bang, now cooled to just 2.7 K above absolute zero. This faint microwave glow fills the entire sky and matches predictions from the Big Bang model.

9. Seasons and Lunar Phases |

The Earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of about 23.5° relative to its orbital plane. This tilt causes the seasons as the Earth orbits the Sun. When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, it experiences summer with longer days and more direct sunlight. At the same time, the Southern Hemisphere experiences winter.

The Moon orbits the Earth approximately every 27.3 days. Its changing apparent shape — the lunar phases — is caused by the varying portions of the sunlit side visible from Earth. The main phases are new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is between the Sun and Moon, and the Moon passes through Earth’s shadow.

10. The Expanding Universe and Dark Components |

Observations of distant supernovae have shown that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. Scientists explain this with a mysterious form of energy called dark energy, which counteracts gravity on large scales. Dark energy is thought to make up about 68% of the total energy in the Universe.

Galaxies and galaxy clusters rotate in ways that cannot be explained by the visible matter alone. This leads to the concept of dark matter, an invisible substance that does not emit or absorb light but exerts gravitational effects. Dark matter accounts for about 27% of the Universe’s mass‑energy content.

Understanding the nature of dark matter and dark energy is one of the biggest challenges in modern cosmology. Future space telescopes and particle physics experiments may help us unveil these cosmic mysteries.
