1. Business Activity and Enterprise |
Business activity exists to satisfy needs and wants. Needs are essentials for survival (e.g., food, shelter), while wants are desires that are not necessary for survival (e.g., luxury holidays). Scarcity means resources are limited, forcing businesses and individuals to make choices. The opportunity cost is the next best alternative given up when a choice is made.
The factors of production are land (natural resources), labour (workforce), capital (man-made equipment and finance) and enterprise (the risk-taker who organises the other three factors). Businesses add value by converting inputs into outputs that customers are willing to pay for. The three main sectors of industry are primary (extraction), secondary (manufacturing) and tertiary (services), and many economies see a shift towards tertiary as they develop.
2. Business Ownership and Legal Structures |
Choosing the right legal structure affects liability, control, access to finance and taxation. The main forms of private-sector business ownership are shown below.
|---|---|---|---|
| Sole Trader | 个体经营者 | Unlimited liability; one owner keeps all profits but bears all risks | 无限责任;单一所有者,独享利润但承担全部风险 |
| Private Limited Company (Ltd) | 私人有限公司 | Limited liability; shares cannot be sold to the public; separate legal identity | 有限责任;股份不得向公众出售;独立的法人实体 |
| Public Limited Company (plc) | 公众有限公司 | Limited liability; can sell shares on the stock exchange; strict disclosure rules | 有限责任;可在证券交易所出售股票;严格的信息披露制度 |
| Franchise | 特许经营 | The franchisee pays fees/royalties to use a proven brand and system; limited control by franchisee | 加盟商支付费用/特许权使用费以使用成熟品牌和体系;加盟商控制权有限 |
| Joint Venture | 合资企业 | Two or more firms share resources, risks and rewards for a specific project | 两家或多家企业为特定项目共享资源、共担风险与收益 |
Public-sector organisations, such as government departments and state-owned enterprises, are owned by the state and often aim to provide essential services rather than maximise profit. They can benefit from economies of scale but may lack efficiency due to limited competition.
3. Business Aims, Objectives and Stakeholders |
Businesses set aims (long-term overall goals) and objectives (short-term, measurable targets) to provide direction. Common objectives include survival (in early stages or a recession), profit maximisation, growth (market share, sales revenue), providing a service (public sector) and being socially responsible. Objectives may change over time depending on market conditions and business size.
Stakeholders are any individuals or groups affected by or interested in a business’s activities. Internal stakeholders include owners, managers and employees; external stakeholders include customers, suppliers, lenders, the local community, pressure groups and the government. Stakeholder conflict can occur, for example, when owners want higher dividends but employees want higher wages, and businesses must balance these interests.
4. Marketing Essentials |
Market research gathers information about customers, competitors and the market. Primary research (field research) collects original data through surveys, interviews and focus groups. Secondary research (desk research) uses existing data such as reports, government statistics and online sources. Primary data is specific but costly; secondary data is cheaper but may be outdated.
Market segmentation divides the market into groups based on factors like age, income, lifestyle and location. This allows businesses to target specific customer needs more effectively. The marketing mix (4Ps) consists of Product (design, features, quality), Price (strategies: cost-plus, penetration, skimming, competitive), Place (distribution channels) and Promotion (advertising, sales promotion, public relations). A successful mix must be coherent and adapted to the target segment.
The product life cycle stages are introduction, growth, maturity and decline. Extension strategies (e.g., new features, new markets, updated packaging) can prolong the maturity stage and prevent decline.
5. Operations Management |
Production methods include job production (one-off unique items, high quality, high cost), batch production (groups of identical products, flexible) and flow (mass) production (continuous process, low unit cost, low flexibility). The choice depends on the nature of demand, product type and available capital.
Quality can be managed through quality control (inspection at the end of production) or quality assurance (building quality into every stage). Total Quality Management (TQM) is a culture of continuous improvement involving all employees. Lean production aims to reduce waste (time, materials) using techniques like just-in-time (JIT) stock control, which delivers supplies exactly when needed, lowering holding costs but requiring reliable suppliers.
Businesses can gain from economies of scale as they grow, leading to lower average costs per unit. These include purchasing (bulk-buying discounts), technical, financial and managerial economies. However, diseconomies of scale (communication breakdown, low morale) can occur if the firm becomes too large.
6. People in Business |
Motivation theories help explain how to improve employee performance. Taylor’s scientific management focused on money as the main motivator (piece-rate pay). Maslow’s hierarchy of needs suggests that once lower-level needs (physiological, safety) are satisfied, workers seek social, esteem and self-actualisation. Herzberg’s two-factor theory distinguishes between hygiene factors (pay, working conditions) that prevent dissatisfaction and motivators (recognition, responsibility) that truly motivate.
Recruitment can be internal (promoting existing staff) or external (advertising outside). The process involves identifying a vacancy, writing job description and person specification, advertising, shortlisting, interviewing and selecting. Training types include induction (for new starters), on-the-job (learning by doing) and off-the-job (external courses). Training improves productivity and motivation but involves costs and time.
7. Finance and Accounting |
Sources of finance are divided into short-term (overdraft, trade credit) and long-term (bank loan, share capital, retained profit). The choice depends on the purpose, amount needed, cost and the firm’s legal structure. Cash flow is the movement of money in and out of a business; a cash flow forecast predicts future inflows and outflows to identify potential shortfalls.
Key cash flow formula:
Net Cash Flow = Total Cash Inflows − Total Cash Outflows
Break-even analysis shows the level of output at which total revenue equals total costs. The break-even point in units is calculated using contribution per unit. Contribution per unit = Selling Price per unit − Variable Cost per unit.
Break-even Point (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per unit − Variable Cost per unit)
Profitability ratios assess performance. Gross profit margin = (Gross Profit ÷ Sales Revenue) × 100%. Net profit margin = (Net Profit ÷ Sales Revenue) × 100%. A falling margin may signal rising costs or falling prices. Liquidity ratios, such as the current ratio (Current Assets ÷ Current Liabilities) and acid test ratio (Current Assets − Stock ÷ Current Liabilities), measure a firm’s ability to meet short-term debts.
8. External Influences on Business |
Businesses operate in a dynamic external environment. Key economic factors include interest rates (affect borrowing costs and consumer spending), exchange rates (impact import/export competitiveness), inflation (general rise in prices, eroding purchasing power) and taxation (direct taxes on profits, indirect taxes on spending). The business cycle – boom, recession, slump, recovery – influences demand and confidence.
Globalisation opens markets but increases competition. Multinational companies (MNCs) can bring investment and jobs, but may also exploit workers or damage the environment. Ethical and environmental issues are increasingly important; consumers and pressure groups expect businesses to act responsibly (fair trade, sustainability, reducing carbon footprint). Legislation, such as employment law and consumer protection, also shapes business behaviour.
9. Business Growth and Integration |
Firms can grow organically (internal growth) by increasing output, opening new branches or developing new products. This is slower but less risky. Inorganic growth occurs through integration (mergers or takeovers). Horizontal integration is between firms in the same industry and stage of production, reducing competition. Vertical integration is along the supply chain (backward – with suppliers; forward – with distributors), controlling inputs or distribution. Conglomerate integration joins unrelated businesses, spreading risk.
10. Last-Minute Revision Tips and Key Formulas |
Focus on command words: ‘identify’ and ‘explain’ require straightforward knowledge; ‘analyse’ demands breaking down causes and consequences; ‘evaluate’ expects you to weigh up arguments and reach a justified conclusion. Always refer to the case study context and use relevant business terminology.
Common formulas you must memorise:
Revenue = Price × Quantity
Total Costs = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs
Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs
Gross Profit Margin = (Gross Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Net Profit Margin = (Net Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100
Current Ratio = Current Assets ÷ Current Liabilities
Acid Test Ratio = (Current Assets − Inventory) ÷ Current Liabilities
Time yourself when practising quantitative tasks; show all workings clearly. For cash flow questions, check that opening and closing balances reconcile. For break-even, remember to label your axes if you draw a chart – sales and costs on the y-axis, output on the x-axis, and clearly mark the break-even point where total cost and total revenue lines intersect.
