Le Chatelier’s Principle: The Compass of Chemical Equilibrium

Introduction / 引言

Chemical equilibrium is one of the most powerful and conceptually rich topics in A-Level Chemistry. It sits at the intersection of thermodynamics and kinetics, explaining why reactions don’t always go to completion and how we can manipulate conditions to maximise yield. At the heart of this topic lies Le Chatelier’s Principle — a deceptively simple rule that governs the behaviour of all reversible reactions under stress.

In this article, we will build a thorough understanding of dynamic equilibrium, explore Le Chatelier’s Principle in depth — covering concentration, pressure, temperature, and catalyst effects — and then apply these concepts to three major industrial processes: the Haber Process, the Contact Process, and the production of methanol. Along the way, we will also master the equilibrium constant Kc and Kp, learning how to calculate them and interpret their values.

1. Reversible Reactions and Dynamic Equilibrium /

1.1 What Is a Reversible Reaction? /

Many chemical reactions proceed in both directions. A classic example is the thermal decomposition of ammonium chloride:

NH4Cl(s) ⇌ NH3(g) + HCl(g)

When heated, solid ammonium chloride decomposes into ammonia and hydrogen chloride gases. Upon cooling, these gases recombine to form solid ammonium chloride — visible as a white ring of solid further up the test tube. The ⇌ symbol (two half-arrows) represents reversibility.

1.2 Dynamic Equilibrium /

A reversible reaction in a closed system eventually reaches a state where the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the backward reaction. At this point:

  • The concentrations of reactants and products remain constant (but not necessarily equal) /
  • The reaction has not stopped — both forward and backward reactions continue at the molecular level /
  • The system is in a state of dynamic (not static) equilibrium /

It is crucial to understand that equilibrium can only be established in a closed system — one where no matter can enter or leave. An open test tube of ammonium chloride will eventually lose all its gaseous products to the atmosphere, and equilibrium can never be reached.

2. Le Chatelier’s Principle /

2.1 The Principle Stated /

Formulated by French chemist Henri Louis Le Chatelier in 1884, the principle states:

If a system at dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change in conditions, the position of equilibrium will shift to counteract that change.

In simpler terms: the system “tries” to undo whatever you do to it. This principle allows chemists to predict how equilibrium will respond to changes in concentration, pressure, temperature, and the addition of catalysts.

2.2 Effect of Concentration /

Consider the equilibrium between iron(III) ions and thiocyanate ions, which produces a deep blood-red complex:

Fe3+(aq) + SCN−(aq) ⇌ [Fe(SCN)]2+(aq) (pale yellow + colourless ⇌ blood-red)

Adding more Fe3+ or SCN−: The equilibrium shifts to the right (forward direction) to consume the added reactant, producing more of the red complex — the solution turns darker red.

Removing products (e.g., by precipitation): The equilibrium shifts to the right to replace what was removed. This is a powerful synthetic tool — continually removing a product drives the reaction forward.

2.3 Effect of Pressure (Gaseous Systems) /

Pressure changes only affect equilibria involving gases, and only when there is a difference in the total number of gas molecules on each side of the equation.

Consider the formation of nitrogen dioxide from dinitrogen tetroxide:

N2O4(g) ⇌ 2NO2(g)

Left side: 1 mole of gas. Right side: 2 moles of gas. /

  • Increasing pressure: Equilibrium shifts to the left (fewer gas molecules, towards N2O4). The brown NO2 colour fades.
  • Decreasing pressure: Equilibrium shifts to the right (more gas molecules, towards NO2). The brown colour intensifies.

If the number of gas molecules is equal on both sides (e.g., H2 + I2 ⇌ 2HI), pressure changes have no effect on the equilibrium position.

2.4 Effect of Temperature /

Temperature is the only condition change that also changes the value of the equilibrium constant Kc (or Kp). To predict the effect, you must know whether the forward reaction is exothermic (ΔH negative) or endothermic (ΔH positive).

Treat heat as a reactant (in endothermic reactions) or a product (in exothermic reactions):

  • Exothermic forward reaction (ΔH < 0): increasing temperature shifts equilibrium left (to absorb the added heat).
  • Endothermic forward reaction (ΔH > 0): increasing temperature shifts equilibrium right (to absorb the added heat).

For the N2O4 ⇌ 2NO2 equilibrium, the forward reaction is endothermic (ΔH = +58 kJ mol−1). Heating shifts the equilibrium right → the brown colour of NO2 deepens. Cooling shifts it left → the mixture turns pale yellow as N2O4 dominates.

2.5 Effect of Catalysts /

This is a common exam trap. A catalyst does NOT affect the position of equilibrium. It provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, speeding up both the forward and backward reactions equally. The result: equilibrium is reached faster, but the equilibrium composition remains unchanged.

3. The Equilibrium Constant /

3.1 Kc — The Concentration-Based Constant /

For a general reversible reaction:

aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD

The equilibrium constant Kc is given by:

Kc = [C]c[D]d / [A]a[B]b

Where square brackets [ ] denote equilibrium concentrations in mol dm−3. Note that solids and pure liquids are omitted from the expression — their effective concentration is constant.

Worked Example /

In the Haber Process: N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g)

At equilibrium in a 2.0 dm3 vessel, there are: 0.20 mol N2, 0.60 mol H2, 0.40 mol NH3.

[N2] = 0.20/2.0 = 0.10 mol dm−3
[H2] = 0.60/2.0 = 0.30 mol dm−3
[NH3] = 0.40/2.0 = 0.20 mol dm−3

Kc = [NH3]2 / ([N2] × [H2]3)
= (0.20)2 / (0.10 × 0.303)
= 0.040 / (0.10 × 0.027)
= 0.040 / 0.0027
= 14.8 dm6 mol−2

3.2 Kp — The Pressure-Based Constant /

When all species are gases, we can also use partial pressures instead of concentrations. The partial pressure of a gas is the pressure it would exert if it alone occupied the volume:

pA = mole fraction of A × total pressure

For N2 + 3H2 ⇌ 2NH3:

Kp = (pNH₃)2 / (pN₂ × pH₂3)

The units of Kp depend on the stoichiometry — in this case: atm−2 (or kPa−2).

3.3 Interpreting Kc and Kp Values / 解读Kc和Kp的值

  • K >> 1: Equilibrium lies far to the right. Products are heavily favoured. /
  • K ≈ 1: Significant amounts of both reactants and products at equilibrium. /
  • K << 1: Equilibrium lies far to the left. Reactants are heavily favoured. /

4. Industrial Applications /

4.1 The Haber Process — Ammonia Synthesis /

Arguably the most important industrial chemical reaction in human history, the Haber Process produces ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen. Fritz Haber developed it in the early 20th century, and it now sustains approximately half of global food production through nitrogen-based fertilisers.

Temperature / 温度Low temperature favours NH3 (exothermic forward). / 低温有利于生成NH3(正向放热)。400–450°CCompromise: low temp gives high yield but too slow. High temp gives faster rate.
Pressure / 压强High pressure favours NH3 (4 mol → 2 mol gas). / 高压有利于NH3(4 mol → 2 mol 气体)。200 atmHigh pressure increases yield AND rate. Limited by equipment cost and safety.
Catalyst / 催化剂No effect on position. Iron (Fe) catalystSpeeds up attainment of equilibrium without affecting yield.

The Haber Process is a textbook case of compromise conditions. Low temperature would give the highest equilibrium yield of ammonia, but the reaction would be impractically slow. High pressure favours both yield and rate, but beyond ~200 atm the engineering costs become prohibitive. The iron catalyst allows equilibrium to be reached at a practical rate at the chosen temperature.

4.2 The Contact Process — Sulfuric Acid Production /

Sulfuric acid is the world’s most produced chemical, with annual production exceeding 230 million tonnes. The key equilibrium step is the oxidation of SO2 to SO3:

低温有利SO3(放热)。450°C with V2O5 catalyst
Pressure / 压强High favours SO3 (3 mol → 2 mol gas). / 高压有利SO3(3 mol → 2 mol 气体)。1–2 atm (near atmospheric)
Catalyst / 催化剂No effect on position. Vanadium(V) oxide (V2O5)

Why only 1–2 atm for the Contact Process when high pressure favours the product? At 450°C, the equilibrium constant is so large that the conversion is already ~99.5% at atmospheric pressure. Spending millions on high-pressure equipment to gain an extra 0.3% conversion is not economically justified. This illustrates a key point: Le Chatelier’s Principle tells you the direction of change, but the magnitude matters in industrial decision-making.

4.3 Methanol Production /

Methanol (CH3OH) is a vital industrial feedstock and a potential future fuel. It is produced from synthesis gas (CO + H2):

CO(g) + 2H2(g) ⇌ CH3OH(g)     ΔH = −91 kJ mol−1

Modern methanol plants operate at 200–300 atm and 200–300°C with a Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. The high pressure favours the forward reaction (3 mol → 1 mol gas) and the moderate temperature is again a compromise between yield (favours low T) and rate (favours high T).

5. Exam Tips and Common Mistakes /

5.1 The Catalyst Trap /

Students frequently write that “adding a catalyst shifts the equilibrium to the right.” This is wrong. A catalyst does not shift the equilibrium position — it merely allows the system to reach equilibrium faster. If you see a question asking about equilibrium yield, a catalyst is never the correct answer.

Temperature is the only factor that changes the numerical value of Kc or Kp. Changing concentration or pressure shifts the equilibrium position but leaves K unchanged. For an exothermic forward reaction, increasing temperature decreases K; for an endothermic forward reaction, increasing temperature increases K.

5.3 Units Matter /

Always include units for Kc and Kp unless the question explicitly states they are not required. The units depend on stoichiometry and can be derived by dimensional analysis. A common slip is forgetting that Kc often has units like dm3 mol−1 or higher powers.

5.4 Omit Solids and Liquids /

In Kc and Kp expressions, solids and pure liquids are not included. For example, in the equilibrium CaCO3(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO2(g), the expression is simply Kp = pCO₂.

例如,在CaCO3(s) ⇌ CaO(s) + CO2(g)的平衡中,表达式仅为Kp = pCO₂。

For Kc calculations involving unknown equilibrium amounts, always use an ICE table (Initial, Change, Equilibrium). This systematic approach prevents algebraic errors:

N2H2NH3
Initial /
Change / 变化−x−3x+2x
Equilibrium / 平衡0.40 − x0.90 − 3x2x

6. Summary / 总结
