1. Introduction to Minerals |

A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a definite chemical composition and an ordered internal crystal structure. Examples include quartz (SiO₂), calcite (CaCO₃), and halite (NaCl). Minerals are the building blocks of rocks, and each mineral has a unique set of physical and chemical properties that allow us to identify it.

Key points: Minerals must be naturally occurring – synthetic gemstones like cubic zirconia are not considered true minerals. They must also be crystalline, meaning atoms are arranged in a repeating pattern. Amorphous substances such as volcanic glass (obsidian) are mineraloids rather than minerals.

2. Physical Properties of Minerals |

We use several observable properties to identify minerals in the field and laboratory. The most important are colour, streak, lustre, hardness, cleavage, fracture, and specific gravity. These properties arise directly from the mineral’s composition and crystal structure, and they form the basis for practical identification tasks in exams.

Hardness is measured on Mohs scale from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). A mineral can scratch any mineral with a lower number. Streak is the colour of the powder produced when a mineral is rubbed against a porcelain plate, and it is often more consistent than the surface colour.

Mohs Hardness Reference Mineral Common Test
1 Talc Easily scratched by fingernail
2 Gypsum Can be scratched by fingernail
3 Calcite Scratched by a copper coin
4 Fluorite Easily scratched by a steel knife
5 Apatite Scratched by a steel knife
6 Orthoclase Feldspar Scratches glass with difficulty
7 Quartz Easily scratches glass
8 Topaz Scratches quartz
9 Corundum Scratches topaz
10 Diamond Hardest known mineral

Lustre describes how light reflects from the surface: metallic, vitreous (glassy), pearly, silky, or dull. Cleavage is the tendency of a mineral to break along smooth planes related to its crystal lattice. Minerals like mica have one perfect cleavage plane, while halite has three directions at right angles. If a mineral breaks with irregular surfaces, it exhibits fracture.

3. Mineral Identification Tests |

Simple chemical and physical tests help distinguish minerals. The acid test uses dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl): calcite and other carbonates effervesce (fizz) as carbon dioxide gas is released. The reaction for calcite is shown below.

CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + CO₂ + H₂O

Minerals like magnetite are magnetic, while haematite is only weakly magnetic. Some minerals, such as calcite, exhibit double refraction – objects viewed through a clear crystal appear doubled. The streak test is especially useful for metallic minerals: haematite gives a red-brown streak; pyrite (fool’s gold) gives a greenish-black streak, distinguishing it from real gold which has a yellow streak.

Specific gravity (relative density) can be felt by hand or measured in the lab. Galena (PbS) feels heavy for its size. Examiners may ask you to suggest identification tests for unknown minerals based on their properties.

4. Introduction to Rocks and the Rock Cycle |

A rock is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. Rocks are classified into three major groups based on how they form: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The rock cycle describes the dynamic transitions between these rock types through processes such as melting, cooling, weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction, cementation, and metamorphism.

The rock cycle is driven by Earth’s internal heat and external energy from the Sun. Uplift, burial, and plate tectonics recycle rocks over millions of years. In exams, you may be asked to sketch the cycle or explain how a specific rock transforms into another.

5. Igneous Rocks: Formation and Types |

Igneous rocks form from the cooling and solidification of magma (below surface) or lava (on the surface). They are classified by their texture and mineral composition. Intrusive (plutonic) igneous rocks cool slowly underground, allowing large crystals to grow, giving a coarse-grained texture. Granite is the most common intrusive rock, containing quartz, feldspar, and mica.

Extrusive (volcanic) igneous rocks cool rapidly at the surface, resulting in fine‑grained or glassy textures. Basalt is a dark‑coloured, fine‑grained extrusive rock rich in iron and magnesium. Obsidian is a volcanic glass that cools so fast that no crystals form. Vesicular textures, like those in pumice, are created by trapped gas bubbles.

Cooling rate determines crystal size: slow cooling → large crystals; fast cooling → small or no crystals. This is a classic exam concept often tested with diagrams of interlocking textures.

6. Sedimentary Rocks: Formation and Features |

Sedimentary rocks form from sediments that are weathered, eroded, transported, deposited, and then lithified. Lithification involves compaction and cementation, where minerals like silica or calcite precipitate from groundwater and bind grains together. Common sedimentary rocks include sandstone, limestone, and shale.

Sandstone is composed mainly of sand‑sized quartz grains and feels gritty. Limestone is predominantly made of calcite, often formed from marine organisms’ shells and skeletons. Chalk is a soft, white limestone. Shale and mudstone form from fine clay and silt particles, often in calm water, and they may split easily along bedding planes.

Fossils are exclusively found in sedimentary rocks, as the heat and pressure of metamorphism or the melting of igneous processes destroy organic remains. Ripple marks, mud cracks, and graded bedding are sedimentary structures that reveal past environments.

7. Metamorphic Rocks: Changes and Textures |

Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are subjected to high temperature and pressure, causing mineralogical and textural changes without melting. Regional metamorphism occurs over large areas due to tectonic forces, producing foliated rocks with aligned minerals. Schist and gneiss are examples of high‑grade foliated rocks.

Contact (thermal) metamorphism happens when rocks are heated by nearby magma. The resulting rock is typically non‑foliated, like marble (from limestone) and quartzite (from sandstone). Marble is prized for sculpture, while slate – a low‑grade foliated rock from shale – is used for roofing.

Key metamorphic changes: limestone → marble; shale → slate → phyllite → schist → gneiss; sandstone → quartzite. Memorising these progressions can help answer sequence questions.

8. Weathering and Erosion |

Weathering is the in‑situ breakdown of rocks at the Earth’s surface. Physical weathering includes freeze‑thaw action, where water enters cracks, freezes and expands, eventually breaking the rock. Exfoliation (onion‑skin weathering) occurs due to pressure release. Chemical weathering involves reactions that alter minerals, such as hydrolysis of feldspar to clay minerals.

Carbonation is a crucial chemical weathering process for limestone landscapes. Rainwater containing dissolved carbon dioxide forms weak carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which reacts with calcium carbonate to form soluble calcium hydrogencarbonate. This leads to karst features like caves, stalactites, and sinkholes.

CaCO₃ + H₂CO₃ ⇌ Ca(HCO₃)₂

Erosion is the removal and transport of weathered material by water, wind, ice, or gravity. Both weathering and erosion drive the sediment supply for sedimentary rocks and shape landscapes.

9. Fossils and Geological Time | 化石与地质年代

Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms. They form when an organism is rapidly buried by sediment, preventing decay. Hard parts such as shells and bones are more likely to fossilise. Mould and cast fossils, carbon films, and trace fossils (tracks, burrows) are common types.

The geological time scale divides Earth’s 4.6‑billion‑year history into eons, eras, periods, and epochs. The Phanerozoic Eon includes the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras. Major extinction events and the first appearance of certain fossils help define boundaries. The end‑Cretaceous extinction wiped out dinosaurs and is marked by an iridium‑rich clay layer.

Index fossils, such as ammonites and trilobites, were widespread, abundant, and lived for a short geological time – making them valuable for correlating rock layers in different locations.

10. Resources from Rocks and Minerals |

Rocks and minerals are vital natural resources. Mineral ores such as haematite (Fe₂O₃) and bauxite (Al₂O₃) are mined for iron and aluminium. Limestone is quarried for cement and as a building stone. Granite is used for countertops and monuments due to its durability. Clay minerals are essential for brick and pottery production.

Fossil fuels – coal, oil, and natural gas – are formed from ancient organic matter, not minerals, because they are not inorganic and crystalline. In IB WJEC contexts, you need to distinguish between mineral resources and energy resources.

Sustainable extraction and the environmental impact of quarrying and mining, such as habitat destruction, dust, and water pollution, are often highlighted in exam essays.

11. Common Rock Examples Detailed |

Granite is a light‑coloured, coarse‑grained intrusive igneous rock composed of quartz, feldspar, and mica. Its interlocking crystals give it strength, and it is widely used in construction. In the landscape, granite forms tors and upland areas due to its resistance to erosion, but it is susceptible to chemical weathering of feldspar.

Limestone (sedimentary) mainly consists of calcite. It fizzes with dilute acid and often contains fossils. Limestone pavements with clints and grikes are classic karst features. In the UK, the Yorkshire Dales showcase extensive Carboniferous Limestone scenery.

Marble (metamorphic) forms from limestone or dolomite. It is non‑foliated, with interlocking calcite crystals that give it a sugary texture and the ability to take a high polish. Unlike limestone, marble does not usually contain fossils, because the metamorphic process destroys them.

12. Exam Tips and Common Misconceptions |

Many students confuse rocks with minerals. Remember: minerals are homogeneous substances with specific formulas; rocks are mixtures of minerals. When asked ‘Name the rock this mineral is likely found in,’ relate it to texture and composition. Quartz and feldspar → granite; calcite → limestone or marble.

Beware of oversimplifying crystal size vs. cooling rate: a porphyritic texture (large crystals in a fine matrix) indicates two‑stage cooling – slow then fast. Always link texture to the cooling history. For metamorphic rocks, foliation results from directed pressure; lack of foliation usually indicates uniform pressure or lack of platy minerals.

When writing equations for chemical weathering, state the full balanced equation. The reaction of limestone with carbonic acid is reversible, leading to the deposition of stalactites and stalagmites in caves. This is a favourite application question.

Finally, always use precise terminology: ‘clastic’ vs. ‘crystalline,’ ‘foliated’ vs. ‘non‑foliated,’ ‘intrusive’ vs. ‘extrusive.’ Label diagrams with exact rock names and key identifiers. Practice interpreting geological cross‑sections and explaining the sequence of events using the principle of superposition and cross‑cutting relationships.
