Earthquake Emergency and Safety Guide for International Students |

📚 Earthquake Emergency and Safety Guide for International Students |

As an international student, adjusting to a new academic and cultural environment is challenging enough. However, if you are studying in an earthquake-prone region, being prepared for seismic events is crucial for your safety and well-being. This guide provides essential knowledge and practical steps to help you stay safe before, during, and after an earthquake.

1. Understanding Earthquakes and Risks |

Earthquakes result from the sudden release of energy in the Earth’s crust, creating seismic waves that shake the ground. They can strike without warning, causing structural damage, landslides, and tsunamis in coastal areas.

International students should familiarise themselves with the seismic hazard level of their host country. Regions such as Japan, the west coast of North America (including California), New Zealand, and parts of the Mediterranean are particularly active. Even in areas with lower seismic risks, preparedness is still wise.

Understand key terms: the epicentre is the point on the surface directly above the earthquake’s origin; magnitude measures the energy released. Familiarity with these terms helps you interpret official warnings and news reports.

2. Pre-Earthquake Preparedness: Essential Steps |

Identify safe spots in every room: under sturdy tables or desks, against interior walls, away from windows, mirrors, and heavy furniture that could topple. Practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique regularly.

Secure heavy objects and appliances. Use brackets to fasten bookcases, TVs, and water heaters to walls. Keep breakable items on low shelves. Know how to shut off gas, electricity, and water.

Develop a communication plan with family and friends. Store emergency contact numbers in your phone and on paper. Designate an out-of-area contact person everyone can reach.

Download earthquake early-warning apps where available. In Japan, for example, the Yurekuru Call app provides seconds to minutes of alert. In the US, ShakeAlert is integrated into many phones.

3. Building Your Emergency Kit |

An emergency kit should sustain you for at least 3 days. Store it in an easily accessible location, such as near your bed or by the exit door.

Essential items include:

1. Water: at least 3 litres per person per day.

2. Non-perishable food: energy bars, canned goods, and a manual can opener.

3. First aid kit and essential medications (include prescriptions).

4. Flashlight with extra batteries or a hand-crank one.

5. Whistle to signal for help.

6. Portable phone charger (power bank) and charging cables.

7. Dust mask, sturdy shoes, and warm clothing.

8. Copies of important documents (passport, visa, insurance) in a waterproof bag.

9. Cash in small denominations.

10. Local map and a list of emergency phrases in the local language.

Consider your specific needs as an international student: include a copy of your school ID, contact information for your country’s embassy or consulate, and any cultural comfort items.

4. During an Earthquake: Indoor Safety |

If you are indoors, stay there. Do not run outside while the ground is shaking as flying debris can be deadly. Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck, and take shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture. Hold on until the shaking stops.

If no table is nearby, drop next to an interior wall and cover your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, glass, chimneys, and items that could fall.

If you are in a high-rise building, expect fire alarms and sprinklers to activate. Do not use elevators. Be aware that the building may sway, but modern high-rises are designed to withstand earthquakes.
