Case Study in Action: A Practical Walkthrough |

📚 Case Study in Action: A Practical Walkthrough |

In Year 7 WJEC Drama, one of the most exciting challenges is the case study task. You are given a short scene or a description of a theatrical moment and asked to explore it from multiple angles – as an actor, a designer, and a director. This article walks you through a complete practical case study, using a made-up scene from a play called ‘The Enchanted Forest’. You’ll learn how to break down a performance text, analyse characters and technical elements, and write clear, effective answers under timed conditions. Let’s turn theory into practice.

1. What is a Case Study in Drama? |

A case study in drama is a focused investigation into a specific scene, character, or production element. You are not just describing what happens; you are offering informed opinions, backed by evidence from the text and your knowledge of theatrical conventions. In WJEC Year 7, you might be asked to analyse a short script extract, a photograph from a performance, or a design concept.

The key skills tested include interpretation, evaluation, and creative thinking. You must show that you can step into the shoes of a performer, a designer, or a director. For example, you could be asked how you would use your voice and movement to portray a nervous character, or how you would light a tense moment.

Always remember the WJEC assessment objectives: AO1 (Create and develop ideas), AO2 (Apply theatrical skills), and AO3 (Evaluate and analyse). A strong case study answer will touch on these areas, showing your understanding of how theatre is made.

始终牢记 WJEC 的评估目标:AO1(创造和发展想法)、AO2(应用戏剧技能)和 AO3(评价与分析)。

2. The Case Study: Scene from ‘The Enchanted Forest’ |

Let’s dive into our practical example. The extract below is from an imaginary children’s play called ‘The Enchanted Forest’. In this scene, two friends, Lucy and Tom, have entered a mysterious woodland to find a missing crystal key that unlocks the way home. The atmosphere is tense, and the trees seem alive.

Extract:

节选:

LUCY: (looking around nervously) I can’t see the path anymore. The trees … they’ve moved.
TOM: (trying to sound brave) Don’t be silly. Trees don’t move.
LUCY: These ones do. Listen! (A low creaking sound is heard.)
TOM: Okay, that’s … that’s just the wind. We need to find the key before dark.
LUCY: (kneeling down, searching) It has to be here. The riddle said, ‘Where the moonlight touches the oldest root.’
(A spotlight slowly illuminates a large, gnarled tree root upstage centre.)
TOM: Look! The moon is coming out. Over there – the root!
LUCY: (gasps) The key! I see something shining.
(As she reaches for it, a shadowy FIGURE rises behind the tree. The sound of a heartbeat grows louder.)

This short extract gives us plenty to work with: character emotions, a powerful atmosphere, and clear technical cues. We will now analyse it step by step.

3. Analysing the Plot and Structure |

The plot here is a classic ‘quest’ moment: the characters are searching for a vital object, and they face an obstacle – the enchanted forest itself. The structure builds tension in three beats. First, Lucy expresses fear and confusion. Second, Tom offers false reassurance, which raises the stakes. Third, they find the key, but immediately a new threat appears – the shadowy figure.

When you answer a case study question, always identify the ‘shape’ of the scene. Ask yourself: what is the main conflict? How does the mood change from beginning to end? In this extract, the mood shifts from anxiety to a brief moment of hope, and then to sudden danger. This structure would influence every creative decision, from acting choices to lighting design.

For your own revision, try drawing a simple tension graph for a scene you are studying. Plot the emotional highs and lows; this will help you think like a director.

4. Exploring Character Motivations |

Character motivation is the reason why a character does or says something. In our extract, Lucy is driven by the need to escape the forest and return home. Her nervous energy suggests she is more sensitive to the magic around her. Tom, on the other hand, is motivated by a desire to protect Lucy and to appear brave, even though he is scared too. His line ‘Don’t be silly. Trees don’t move.’ is a perfect example of a character masking true feelings.

When answering questions about character, never just say ‘Lucy is scared.’ Instead, use evidence and suggest how an actor might show that fear. For example: ‘Lucy’s use of short, broken sentences and her physical action of kneeling suggest she feels vulnerable. An actor might use a trembling voice and wide, searching eyes to communicate this to the audience.’

Also consider a character’s ‘super-objective’ – their deep want throughout the whole play. For Lucy, it might be to find safety and belonging. Even in a short extract, this underlying drive informs every moment.

5. Examining Stage Directions and Setting |

Stage directions are the playwright’s instructions, often written in italics. In our extract, they give vital clues about mood and action. For instance, ‘(looking around nervously)’ tells the actor exactly how to deliver the line. ‘(A low creaking sound is heard.)’ signals the importance of sound design in building atmosphere. The direction about the spotlight illuminating the root tells the lighting designer and director precisely where the audience should look.

When you analyse stage directions, don’t just repeat them. Explain their effect. The shadowy Figure that ‘rises behind the tree’ is not just a movement; it creates a powerful visual image that turns the mood instantly. A director might choose to have the Figure move in slow motion to increase the feeling of nightmare.

Setting is also a crucial part of your answer. Although the script says ‘a mysterious woodland’, you can be creative. How would you suggest the trees ‘moving’? Maybe with actors in tree costumes, or with shifting projection backdrops. A detailed description of setting shows you are thinking as a designer.

6. Considering Costume and Props |

Costumes tell the audience who a character is before they even speak. For our scene, Lucy might wear practical but colourful clothes that are now slightly torn and dirty from her journey. The wear and tear would suggest how long she has been lost. Tom’s costume could be more put-together, perhaps with a jacket that he buttoned up to appear brave; but the jacket could be a size too big, hinting at his vulnerability.

Props are equally important. The crystal key – the object they are searching for – could be made of faceted, reflective material that catches the spotlight beautifully. As an actor, how you handle a prop can reveal character. When Lucy ‘gasps’ and reaches for the key, she might do so with trembling hands, as if afraid it will disappear. Tom might hold it up triumphantly, only to freeze when the Figure appears.

In your case study answers, always link costume and prop choices back to the character’s situation or the play’s themes. A simple checklist can help you remember key points.

  • Colour: What emotions do the costume colours suggest?

  • Condition: Is the clothing pristine or distressed? Why?

  • Prop function: Is the prop a symbol, a tool, or a clue? How is it used on stage?

7. The Role of Lighting and Sound |

Lighting and sound create the world of the play. In our extract, the playwright has already given us clear cues: ‘A spotlight slowly illuminates a large, gnarled tree root’ and ‘The sound of a heartbeat grows louder.’ These are gold for a case study answer. You can describe exactly how you would realise these moments on stage.

For the spotlight, think about colour and timing. A cool, pale blue tint could suggest moonlight and mystery. The slow illumination builds suspense. You might add that the rest of the stage remains in darkness, isolating the root and making the audience lean forward. For the heartbeat, start with a low, distant thump from a bass speaker, gradually increasing in tempo and volume. This creates a physical sensation of fear in the audience.

Don’t forget practicalities. A sudden blackout followed by a sharp sound can signal a scene change or a scare. In a WJEC exam, you gain marks by showing you understand how equipment like a lighting rig or a sound desk is used to achieve an effect. Even in Year 7, using terms like ‘gobo’ (a stencil for light shapes) or ‘cross-fade’ can impress an examiner – as long as you explain them.

8. Performance Skills and Blocking |

Performance skills include voice and movement. When analysing the extract, you can offer actor’s notes for Lucy and Tom. For Lucy, use a higher pitch when she says ‘The trees … they’ve moved,’ but let her voice tremble and trail off at the end of the sentence. Her physicality could be hunched and small, taking tiny, cautious steps. When she kneels to search, the actor might sweep her hands frantically over the ground.

Tom’s voice work is different. He tries to sound confident, so his initial lines might be delivered with forced enthusiasm and a louder volume. But you could direct the actor to let a tiny crack appear in his voice on the word ‘wind’, revealing his own doubt. His movement might be more upright, but he could unconsciously step in front of Lucy, a blocking choice that shows protectiveness.

Blocking is the planned movement of actors on stage. A useful technique is to sketch a quick bird’s-eye view of the stage and plot the characters’ paths. During the extract, Lucy could start downstage right, cross to centre to kneel, then retreat upstage when the Figure appears. Tom might mirror her path, keeping a physical connection. Always justify your blocking: it must support the story and relationships, not just be random movement.

9. Bringing It All Together: Writing Your Answers |

A top-mark case study answer is structured, detailed, and grounded in the text. Begin by stating your creative vision or interpretation: ‘I would direct this scene to highlight the contrast between childhood innocence and the threat of the unknown.’ Then, support this with choices from the three areas: performance, design, and direction.

Use a simple paragraph formula: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link (PEEL). For instance: ‘To emphasise Tom’s fake bravery (Point), I would direct the actor to deliver ‘Don’t be silly’ with a loud voice and a wide smile (Evidence). This would suggest he is over-compensating for his own fear, as if he is trying to convince himself as much as Lucy (Explain). This links to the overall moment of tension, as the audience senses something is still wrong (Link).’

Time yourself practising. WJEC Year 7 tasks often give you 20–25 minutes. Spend the first 5 minutes reading the extract and making brief notes. Then write your answer, leaving 2 minutes at the end to check for clarity. Bullet points can be effective in listing design choices, but full sentences are safer for explaining your reasoning.

10. Practical Rehearsal Tips |

Case study tasks often ask how you would rehearse a moment. Rehearsal is not just about memorising lines; it is about experimenting and refining. A useful strategy is ‘Actioning’ – writing an active verb next to each line to define the character’s intention, such as ‘to plead’, ‘to reassure’, ‘to challenge’. In our extract, Tom’s line ‘We need to find the key before dark’ could have the action ‘to focus’ or ‘to motivate’.

Another powerful rehearsal technique is ‘Hot Seating’, where an actor sits in character and answers questions from the rest of the group. You could hot-seat Lucy to discover her backstory: How long has she been in the forest? What is her biggest fear? This deepens the actor’s understanding and makes the performance more truthful.

When writing about rehearsal in a case study, be specific. Instead of saying ‘I would do a run-through,’ say ‘I would isolate the moment where the Figure appears and experiment with different speeds of movement. We would try the Figure rising in 3 seconds, then in 10 seconds, and discuss which version builds more dread.’ This shows genuine directorial thinking.

11. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by simply retelling the plot. The examiner knows what happens in the extract. Your job is to analyse the ‘how’ and ‘why’. Avoid writing ‘Lucy says she can’t see the path,’ and instead write ‘Lucy’s line ‘I can’t see the path’ immediately establishes the disorientating setting and her vulnerability.’

Another pitfall is vague technical descriptions. Saying ‘the lighting should be spooky’ is not enough. What colour? What intensity? Where is the light positioned? A better answer: ‘I would use a low-intensity, green-tinted wash from a high side angle, casting long, distorted shadows across the stage to create an unsettling, otherworldly feel.’

Finally, don’t ignore the audience. Theatre is a live experience, so always consider the effect on the people watching. How will they react? Where will they be looking? The heartbeat sound, for example, could be mixed with a very low-frequency rumble that the audience feels in their chests, making the tension physically immersive.

12. Sample Questions and Model Answers |

Here are some typical WJEC Year 7 case study questions based on our extract, along with short model responses.

Question (English) Model Answer Snippet
Describe how you would use your voice and body to play Lucy in this extract. I would play Lucy with a trembling voice, especially on the line ‘They’ve moved.’ My pitch would rise on ‘moved’, showing panic. Physically, I’d keep my arms close to my body and take shallow breaths. When I kneel, my movements would be hurried and a little clumsy, showing desperation.
Explain how sound design could build tension at the end of the scene. As Lucy reaches for the key, I’d introduce a low heartbeat sound, starting at 60 beats per minute and gradually accelerating to 120. Underneath that, a subtle, atonal string drone would grow in volume. The combination of rhythmic heartbeat and dissonant drone creates a feeling of unavoidable danger, making the audience hold their breath.

Practise writing your own answers to these questions, then check them against the PEEL structure we looked at earlier. With consistent practice, you will be able to tackle any WJEC Year 7 case study with confidence.
