Case Study in Action: A Sociology Skills Workshop |

📚 Case Study in Action: A Sociology Skills Workshop |

Welcome to your sociology case study workshop! In Year 7, you start to see the world through the eyes of a sociologist. One of the best ways to do this is by analysing real-life situations — we call these case studies. A case study is a detailed look at a small group, a person, or an event to uncover deeper patterns about how society operates. Through this article, you will learn step-by-step methods for breaking down a case study, applying key concepts, and building your own sociological arguments. Grab a notebook and get ready to think like a social scientist.

1. What Is a Sociological Case Study? |

A case study in sociology is not just a story — it is a research tool. Sociologists choose a specific example and investigate it in depth. They might look at a family, a classroom, or a youth club to understand how norms, values, and roles are formed. The power of a case study lies in its detail: it helps us connect small everyday actions to big ideas like socialisation or inequality. For your CCEA course, learning to analyse a case study prepares you for both exams and real-world sociological thinking.

When you read a case study, ask yourself: Who are the people involved? What are their relationships? What invisible rules guide their behaviour? These questions will become your sociological toolkit. Remember, every case study is set in a particular time and place, so always note the context — whether it is a small town in Northern Ireland or a multicultural city school.

2. Meet the Johnston Family: Our Example Case |

Let us introduce a fictional but realistic case study: the Johnston family lives in a semi-detached house in a quiet estate just outside Belfast. Mr Johnston works as a nurse at the local hospital, and Mrs Johnston is a teaching assistant at Oakwood Integrated Primary School. They have two children: Emily, aged 12, who attends Oakwood Integrated College, and Ben, aged 9, who is in Year 5 at the primary school. The family has a friendly relationship with their next-door neighbours, the O’Reillys, who moved from Poland ten years ago.

This case study is rich with sociological clues. We can explore the family structure, the roles each person plays, the values they hold, and the institutions that shape their daily lives. As we move through the workshop, keep the Johnstons in mind. You will be asked to apply each new concept to their situation, just as you would in a CCEA classroom activity or homework task.

3. Understanding Social Status and Roles |

In sociology, the word ‘status’ means the position a person holds in society, while ‘role’ describes the expected behaviour attached to that status. Each of us holds several statuses at once. For example, Emily is a daughter, a student, and a friend. Each status comes with a set of roles: as a daughter she is expected to help with small chores; as a student she must complete homework; as a friend she is expected to be loyal and supportive.

Look at Mr Johnston: his statuses include nurse, husband, father, and neighbour. His roles at work involve caring for patients, following medical procedures, and working in a team. At home, his roles shift to being a supportive partner and a parent who helps with school runs. Can you spot a possible role conflict? Sometimes Mr Johnston has to work a night shift and misses a school event — that is a clash between his work role and his parent role. Identifying such tensions is a key skill in case study analysis.

4. Uncovering Norms and Values in Everyday Life | 揭示日常生活中的规范与价值观

Norms are the unwritten rules that guide our behaviour, while values are the shared beliefs about what is good, right, or important. In the Johnston household, a clear norm is that everyone takes off their shoes at the front door. This norm reflects values of cleanliness and respect for the home. At the dinner table, another norm is no mobile phones, which shows they value face-to-face conversation and family time.

Schools also have strong norms and values. At Oakwood Integrated College, students stand up when a teacher enters the room — a norm that expresses respect for authority. The school’s value of inclusion is visible in its integrated ethos, where pupils from different religious and cultural backgrounds learn together. When you analyse a case study, always list the visible norms and then ask: what deeper value does this norm protect? This technique helps you move from description to explanation.

5. Primary Socialisation: The Role of the Family |

Socialisation is the lifelong process of learning the culture of a society. Primary socialisation happens in early childhood, mostly within the family. In the Johnston case, Emily and Ben learned their first language, basic manners, and early beliefs about right and wrong from their parents. Mrs Johnston reads bedtime stories that often include moral lessons, while Mr Johnston encourages the children to share toys and take turns. These small interactions are powerful: they shape the children’s personality and prepare them for the wider world.

Sociologists say that the family acts as an ‘agent of socialisation’. It also passes on social identity — for instance, the Johnstons’ sense of being part of a Northern Irish community and their specific family traditions, such as Sunday visits to grandparents. When you study any case study, trace the family interactions back to early childhood. Ask: What skills, values, and habits were formed here? How might these affect the person’s later life at school and in wider society?

6. Secondary Socialisation: School and Beyond |

As children grow, they enter new settings that continue the socialisation process — this is called secondary socialisation. For Emily and Ben, Oakwood schools are powerful secondary agents. At school, they learn to follow a timetable, obey rules set by non-family adults, and cooperate with a diverse group of peers. The formal curriculum teaches academic subjects, but there is also a ‘hidden curriculum’: unspoken lessons about punctuality, competition, and conformity.

Emily’s experience in Year 8 netball team illustrates this perfectly. She learns that being part of a team means wearing the same kit, attending practice on time, and putting the group’s success above personal glory. These experiences teach her the norms of a formal organisation. When you analyse a case study, identify both the formal and hidden curriculum. Also notice how the individual’s behaviour changes across different settings — the same person might be quiet at home but outspoken in a club. That contrast reveals the power of secondary socialisation.

7. Peer Group and Media as Socialising Agents |

During adolescence, the peer group becomes an increasingly important agent of socialisation. Emily’s friendship circle at Oakwood College influences her taste in music, her slang, and even her attitudes towards schoolwork. If her friends value academic achievement, Emily is likely to work harder. If they rebel against authority, she might feel pressure to do the same. Ben, though younger, already experiences peer influence in the playground, where games and rules are negotiated without adult interference.

The mass media is another agent you must consider. Emily spends time on social media platforms like TikTok, where she observes beauty standards, humour, and political memes. These media messages can shape her self-image and worldview. The Johnston family also watches news together, which influences their understanding of community issues in Northern Ireland. In your case study analysis, always ask: Who are the individual’s friends and what media do they consume? Then link these to the person’s attitudes, language, and behaviour.

8. Exploring Cultural Identity and Diversity |

Culture includes the language, beliefs, customs, and traditions shared by a group. The Johnstons’ cultural identity is shaped by being a Northern Irish family. They celebrate both Halloween and St Patrick’s Day, enjoy Irish stew, and use local expressions like ‘wee’ and ‘craic’. Their neighbour, Kasia O’Reilly, brings Polish traditions to the street — at Christmas she shares pierogi, and her children speak both Polish and English at home.

This cultural mix is a great example of diversity within a small community. Emily has learned a few words in Polish from the O’Reilly children and has gained an appreciation for different customs. A sociologist would note how cultural exchange happens informally among neighbours and how it can reduce prejudice. When you write about a case study, comment on the cultural elements present and explain how they contribute to the person’s identity. Also consider if there are any cultural clashes — perhaps Ben once felt confused when his friend invited him to a tradition he didn’t know. These moments reveal how culture is learned and negotiated.

9. Research Methods: Gathering Evidence in a Case Study |

Sociologists don’t just guess — they collect data. If you were to study the Johnstons as a real research project, you could use several methods. First, participant observation: you might spend time with the family, watching how they interact and taking notes. Second, semi-structured interviews: you could ask Emily and her parents open-ended questions about their daily routines and values. Third, questionnaires: a short survey could be sent to neighbours to understand community relationships.

Each method has strengths and weaknesses. Observation gives rich, detailed data but can be time-consuming, and the researcher might influence behaviour (the Hawthorne effect). Interviews allow you to explore feelings but rely on people being honest. Questionnaires can reach many people quickly but lack depth. In a CCEA exam, you may be asked to suggest a research method for a given scenario. Practise by imagining you are investigating a particular aspect of our case study and then justify your choice of method.

10. Applying Concepts: Your Turn to Analyse |

Now it is time to put your new skills into action. Read the mini-case below and answer the questions that follow, using the sociological ideas from this workshop. Mini-case: Josh is a 13-year-old boy who lives with his mother and two older brothers. His father passed away last year. Josh plays football for a local club and is a member of a church youth group. At school, his friends often tease him for getting good grades, so Josh sometimes pretends not to care about tests. He spends about three hours a day on YouTube and gaming.

Questions: (1) List three statuses Josh holds and describe one role for each. (2) Identify two norms that might exist in Josh’s football club. (3) Name three agents of socialisation that influence Josh and explain how each one shapes his behaviour. (4) Suggest one research method you would use to learn more about peer pressure in Josh’s school. Justify your choice. Write your answers in full sentences, just as you would in a CCEA assignment. You can compare your ideas with a study partner to deepen your understanding.

11. Building Strong Sociological Arguments |

When writing about a case study, simply describing what you see is not enough. You need to build an argument that uses evidence and concepts. A strong sociological paragraph often follows a simple structure: Point → Evidence → Explain → Link. For instance, ‘Johnston family dinners reveal a strong norm of no mobile phones (Point). This is shown when Ben’s phone is taken away at the table (Evidence). The norm reflects the value placed on family conversation (Explain). This links to primary socialisation, where children learn face-to-face interaction skills (Link).’

Using this PEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explain, Link) will help you write clear, analytical responses. In your CCEA assessments, examiners look for your ability to do more than just state facts. They want to see you connecting the case study to wider sociological ideas such as social control, inequality, or cultural transmission. Practise by taking any observation from the Johnston or Josh cases and writing a full PEEL paragraph.

12. Revision and Summary: The Sociologist’s Toolkit |

Congratulations! You have now worked through a complete sociological case study analysis. Let us review the key tools you should carry into any exam or project: identify statuses and roles, spot norms and values, trace primary and secondary socialisation, notice agents like family, school, peers, and media, appreciate cultural identity and diversity, and choose research methods wisely. Keep a glossary of these terms in your folder and update it with your own examples from news stories or your own life.

The more you practise, the more natural sociological thinking will become. Next time you watch a TV show or sit in a cafe, try a mini case study in your head: Who are these people? What norms are they following? What role conflicts do you see? By making sociology part of your everyday world, you will develop the sharp analytical skills that top marks are made of. Good luck with your CCEA Sociology journey!
