SQA Physical Education: Exam Technique and Marking Criteria | SQA

📚 SQA Physical Education: Exam Technique and Marking Criteria | SQA

Getting ready for your Year 7 SQA Physical Education exam involves more than just knowing the rules of basketball or the names of muscles. You need to understand how the exam is marked and what command words really mean. Mastering these exam skills will help you turn what you know into the marks you deserve, giving you the confidence to tackle any question that comes your way.

1. Understanding Command Words |

Every question in the SQA Physical Education paper uses specific command words like ‘identify’, ‘describe’, ‘explain’, or ‘evaluate’. These words are not just hints; they are precise instructions that tell you exactly how to structure your answer. If you only identify when the question asks you to explain, you will lose many marks, even if your knowledge is correct.

‘Identify’ means to name or pick out a single fact, such as a skill or muscle, without giving extra detail. An example answer would be ‘Quadriceps’ or ‘Chest pass’. ‘Describe’ requires you to give more details about what something looks like or what happens. For a skill, you might describe the movements of the arms and legs in order.

‘Explain’ goes further: you must give reasons why something happens or how it links to performance. For instance, explaining why the quadriceps contract during a jump shot involves linking the muscle to the movement outcome. ‘Evaluate’ is the highest order; here you must make a judgement about strengths and weaknesses, often suggesting how to improve. You might evaluate a teammate’s defending by weighing up what worked well and what did not, using evidence from a game.

2. Marking Criteria: Knowledge and Understanding |

In the SQA Physical Education marking scheme, the first purpose of a question is often to test your Knowledge and Understanding (KU). This means you must show that you can recall facts about physical activities, rules, and the human body. To gain a mark for KU, you might simply need to name the agonist muscle in a press-up, or describe the role of a midfielder in football.

However, KU marks are not just for single-word answers. If a question is worth 2 KU marks, you typically need to provide two distinct, correct pieces of information. A common mistake is to repeat the same idea using different words, which only counts once. For example, stating ‘the heart beats faster’ and ‘the pulse increases’ is essentially the same KU point; instead, you could say ‘breathing rate increases’ and ‘body temperature rises’.

Make sure you use the correct terminology. Instead of ‘the ankle bending’, write ‘plantar flexion’ if that is the official term you have learned. Accurate vocabulary shows a higher level of understanding and can often be the difference between a pass and a distinction-level answer.

3. Marking Criteria: Application and Analysis |

After KU, the marking criteria move on to Application and Analysis. This skill is about using your knowledge in a specific context, often one mentioned in the question scenario. You might be asked to consider a game of hockey or a gymnastics sequence. To gain these marks, you must link your KU points directly to the named activity.

For example, if a question asks you to analyse your performance in a basketball layup, simply describing the steps of the skill gives KU. To climb into Analysis marks, you must state the impact of those steps. You could analyse that ‘bending my knees deeply allowed me to generate more upward force, leading to a higher jump and a cleaner release’. Notice how this connects the action to a performance outcome.

When analysing your own or someone else’s performance, always be specific. Avoid vague statements like ‘my pass was bad’. Instead, analyse: ‘my pass lacked accuracy because I did not follow through with my wrists, which caused the ball to land short of my target, giving the opposition time to intercept.’ This precise breakdown is what markers look for.

4. Marking Criteria: Evaluation |

Evaluation marks are among the most demanding. You must make a clear judgement about the quality or effectiveness of something. This is not just listing good and bad points; it is weighing them against a standard and often involves making a plan to develop performance. You might say, ‘Defensively, our team was strong in the first half because we communicated well, but this dropped after the break due to fatigue, which put us under pressure.’

To reach the Evaluation level, you should follow a pattern: identify a strength or weakness, explain why it was effective or problematic, and then suggest a detailed improvement plan. For instance, ‘My weakness was the overhead clear in badminton; my contact point was too low, leading to a flat trajectory. To improve I will practise against a wall, aiming to strike the shuttle above my head with full arm extension, checking my form in a mirror.’

Effective evaluation also uses comparative language. Words like ‘more consistent’, ‘less fluid’, or ‘the most significant improvement’ show you are making judgements. When you compare your performance now to an earlier point in the term, you demonstrate the ability to evaluate progress, which is exactly what high-level marking criteria require.

5. Structuring Your Answers |

Good structure turns disjointed thoughts into a clear, logical argument. Even if you know all the facts, a messy answer can hide your brilliant points from the marker. Always start by brainstorming the key points you want to make, related directly to the command word. Use the space beside the question to jot down a one-word plan before you write your full response.

Your answer should have a short opening sentence that restates the question focus, a middle section with your developed points in order, and a brief finishing sentence if the question requires a conclusion. For a 6-mark ‘evaluate’ question, you could plan: strength 1 with evidence, weakness 1 with evidence, weakness 2 with evidence and improvement drill, then a final sentence comparing the overall balance.

Always match the number and depth of your points to the marks available. A question marked out of 2 KU points and 2 Analysis points needs two separate developed points, each containing a fact and its application. If you write three or four shallow points, you may still only gain 2 marks because you did not develop the analysis deeply enough for each one.

6. Using PEEL Paragraphs | 使用 PEEL 段落

The PEEL method (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) is a powerful way to build your paragraphs, especially for longer answers. It ensures you never leave a point hanging. Start with a clear Point that directly answers the question. Then provide Evidence from a specific activity or your own performance.

Next, Explain how your evidence proves the point, showing your understanding and analytical skill. Finally, Link your explanation back to the broader question or to the next paragraph to show the implications. For a question on fitness, you could state: ‘Point: Cardiovascular endurance is vital for a netball centre. Evidence: In a match against the leaders, I made more third-quarter interceptions than my opponent. Explanation: This shows my high endurance allowed me to maintain sprint speed, while the opponent tired. Link: Therefore, without this fitness component, my defensive impact would drop sharply.’

While you do not need to label your paragraphs ‘Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link’ in the exam, your writing should follow this rhythm naturally. The marker should be able to underline your point, tick your evidence, and highlight your explanation, all in a seamless flow. PEEL helps prevent the common problem of description without analysis.

7. Answering Describe Questions |

Describe questions test your observational knowledge. When asked to describe a technique, imagine you are explaining it to someone who cannot see it. Cover the body parts in order, from feet to head, and mention the timing. For a basketball jump shot, you might describe: ‘Begin with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, ball held high. As you extend the legs, push the ball upward with your dominant hand while the guide hand supports. Release the ball at the peak of the jump with a flick of the wrist.’

You can also describe data, trends, or rules. If a table shows heart rate recovery times, do not just read the numbers. Describe the pattern: ‘The fitter individual’s heart rate returned to resting levels 45 seconds faster than the less fit individual.’ Visual marking schemes reward descriptions that capture the whole picture, not just isolated facts.

8. Answering Explain Questions |

Explain questions often contain the word ‘why’. Simply saying what happens is not enough; you must give the reason or mechanism. The marker is looking for a cause-and-effect relationship. For example, if asked to explain the importance of the follow-through in a hockey push pass, do not just define follow-through. Explain that ‘following through ensures the stick remains in contact with the ball longer, transferring more momentum and increasing accuracy and speed.’

Use linking words like ‘because’, ‘so that’, ‘this leads to’, and ‘as a result’. These signal to the marker that you are moving beyond description into explanation. In a physiological question, you might explain: ‘During a long-distance run, the body uses aerobic respiration because it can provide energy for a longer period, producing carbon dioxide and water as by-products, which are easily removed.’

9. Answering Discuss and Evaluate Questions |

Discuss and evaluate questions require a balanced argument. You should present more than one side of an issue before reaching a conclusion. The best answers treat these as a mini-debate. A typical structure is to outline the positive aspects first, then the negative aspects or limitations, and finally make a judgement that brings them together.

When evaluating a personal training programme, do not just state that it was effective. Discuss how: ‘The repetitive sprint training improved my speed endurance, proven by my 30-metre times decreasing by 0.3 seconds. However, my agility did not improve because the programme lacked lateral movement drills. To be more effective overall, the programme should have included cone drills twice a week.’ This shows critical thinking and planning, which score top evaluation marks.

10. Time Management and Paper Strategy |

The SQA Physical Education exam has several sections, and mismanaging your time is one of the biggest reasons students lose marks. Start by reading the entire paper quickly to give your brain an overview. Then allocate time based on the marks per question: roughly one minute per mark is a smart guide. A 4-mark question should take about 4 minutes; do not spend 10 minutes perfecting a 2-mark response.

If you get stuck on a difficult question, circle the question number, leave some space, and move on. The last 10 minutes of the exam should be a safety buffer to return to those tricky parts and to check your SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) on questions where it is assessed. Clear handwriting is also important; a mark cannot be awarded if the examiner cannot read your response.

Finally, remember that in your practical performance units, mental preparation and exam technique apply off the field too. When you answer oral questions after a performance, use the same PEEL structure in your spoken responses. Staying calm, listening carefully to the entire question, and pausing to think before you speak can substantially raise your assessment grade.
