Starting Year 7 opens up exciting new subjects, and Media Studies is one that will change the way you see the world. This summer bridging course is designed to introduce you to the key ideas, language and skills you will need for the AQA Media Studies curriculum. By exploring the core concepts now, you can walk into your first lesson feeling curious, prepared and confident.

1. What is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is not simply about watching television or scrolling through social media. It is the critical analysis of the media we consume every day and the creative process behind making media products. You will learn to ask questions like: Who made this? Why was it made? Who is it for? and What techniques are used to attract and persuade us?

The subject is built around four key concepts: Media Language (the codes and conventions used), Representation (how people, places and events are portrayed), Audience (who consumes media and how they respond) and Institution (the organisations that create and distribute media). You will also engage in practical production tasks, turning theory into creative projects.

2. Key Media Terminology |

Just like science has its own vocabulary, Media Studies uses precise terms to describe what we see, hear and read. Getting comfortable with this language early will help you analyse any media text with confidence.

Below is a starter glossary of essential terms you will encounter in Year 7. Try to use these words when you discuss your favourite films, adverts or games over the summer.

Any media product such as a film, advert, newspaper or social media post that we can ‘read’ and analyse.
The literal, obvious meaning of what we see or hear.
The deeper, associated meanings or ideas that come to mind when we see or hear something.
A category of media texts that share similar codes and conventions, like horror, comedy or news.
The specific group of people a media product is aimed at, often defined by age, gender or interests.
How media texts portray individuals, groups, events or issues, constructing a version of reality.
A simplified, often exaggerated generalisation about a group of people.
The way a story is structured and told, including plot, characters and setting.
Everything placed in front of the camera or arranged within a frame: setting, lighting, costume, props and actor positioning.
The distance and angle from which the camera records, such as close-up, medium shot or long shot.

Start collecting examples: next time you watch a film, identify the genre and think about the connotations of the costumes. The more you practise, the more natural this language becomes.

3. Media Forms and Platforms |

Media products come in many different forms, each with its own set of conventions. Traditional forms include print (newspapers, magazines), broadcast (television, radio) and cinema. Newer digital forms include websites, social media platforms, video streaming and podcasts.

A ‘platform’ is the way a media text reaches its audience. For example, a film might be distributed in cinemas, then on a streaming platform like Netflix, and promoted through Instagram or TikTok. Understanding the platform helps you think about how the audience experiences the text.

As you prepare for Year 7, try to notice how the same story or message changes across different platforms. A news story appears in print, on a website, and as a short video reel, and each version is crafted slightly differently for its audience.

4. Audience and Demographics |

No media text is made for everyone. Producers identify a target audience using demographics – characteristics such as age, gender, occupation, income and location. In the UK, a common system used by the advertising industry is the NRS social grades, which groups people into categories like A (upper middle class), B (middle class), C1, C2, D and E.

Psychographics go deeper than numbers and look at the audience’s values, attitudes and lifestyles, such as ‘Explorers’ who like new experiences or ‘Mainstreamers’ who follow popular trends. Media producers use these profiles to shape content that will appeal to the right group.

A useful theory to remember is the ‘Uses and Gratifications’ model, which suggests audiences actively choose media to fulfil needs: information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment. When you decide to watch a funny video to cheer up, you are using media for entertainment and mood management.

5. Representation in Media |

Representation refers to the way media texts construct versions of people, places and events. It is a re-presentation, not a simple mirror of reality. Every choice – from the words used in a headline to the actor cast in a role – shapes the meaning the audience receives.

Stereotypes are often used as shortcuts in storytelling, but they can be limiting and misleading. For instance, an advert might show a woman only in a domestic role or present a teenager as lazy and rude. When you study representation, you will learn to challenge these images and ask whose voices are being heard and whose are missing.

Summer activity: pick one magazine cover or advert every day. Identify the main character and note what their clothing, expression and background suggest about them. Ask yourself: is this a fair and accurate representation, or does it rely on stereotypes?

6. Narrative Theory Basics |

Stories are everywhere in media, and they are rarely told in a random order. Narrative theory helps us understand the structure behind the storytelling. Todorov’s theory suggests many stories follow a pattern: equilibrium (everything is normal), disruption (something goes wrong), recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, and new equilibrium (a return to normal, but changed).

Propp studied folk tales and identified character types that still appear today: the hero, the villain, the donor, the helper, the princess and the dispatcher. Not all stories contain all types, but these archetypes can be spotted in everything from blockbuster movies to cereal adverts.

Think about a simple fairy tale or a recent film you watched. Map out the equilibrium-disruption-new equilibrium structure and list which character archetypes you can find. This exercise will sharpen your analytical eye for Year 7.

7. Introduction to Media Institutions |

Media institutions are the organisations that produce, distribute and regulate media content. They range from public service broadcasters like the BBC, funded by the licence fee, to commercial companies like Disney or Netflix, which operate to make a profit.

The difference between public service and commercial institutions matters because it affects the content they create. The BBC has a remit to inform, educate and entertain, which means it must provide news and programmes that serve all audiences. A commercial channel relies on advertising revenue and may prioritise content that attracts large, valuable audiences.

As you prepare for Year 7, pay attention to logos, opening credits and brand identities. Notice whether a programme is on BBC One, ITV or a streaming service, and think about how that might influence the style of the content.

8. Analyzing a Magazine Cover |

A magazine cover is a great starting point for applying your new media knowledge. Every element is carefully chosen to attract the intended reader. The main image often uses direct eye contact with the camera to create a connection, and the facial expression and body language convey a mood or brand identity.

The masthead (the title of the magazine) is designed in a distinctive font that becomes recognisable. Cover lines are short, enticing phrases that promise exclusive stories, tips or revelations, and the colour palette is selected to make the magazine stand out on the shelf while reflecting its genre, such as pink and pastels for a teen fashion title or bold red and yellow for a gaming magazine.

Pick up any magazine or find a digital cover online. Identify the target audience by looking at the cover price, the celebrities featured and the language used. Then label the denotation and connotation of the main image. Write three sentences in your own words explaining why the cover is designed that way.

9. Understanding Advertising |

Advertising surrounds us, and its purpose is to persuade. Adverts use a combination of visual codes, language and psychological appeals to sell products or ideas. One common technique is the use of emotional appeal, such as happiness, fear or nostalgia, to make us associate a positive feeling with the brand.

Celebrity endorsement is another powerful tool. When a famous person uses or promotes a product, the audience may transfer their admiration for the celebrity onto the brand itself. Slogans, jingles and repetition help make the message memorable, while persuasive language like ‘limited edition’, ‘new formula’ or ‘the best’ creates urgency and desire.

For summer practice, watch three adverts on television or YouTube and list the persuasive techniques each one uses. Consider the target audience and how the advert attempts to meet their needs according to the Uses and Gratifications model.

10. Preparing for Year 7: Skills to Develop |

Success in Media Studies comes from curiosity and a willingness to look beyond the surface. Over the summer, build a habit of active watching and reading. Whenever you encounter a media text, pause and ask the key questions: Who created this? What techniques are they using? Who is the target audience? What values are being represented?

Start a media scrapbook or a digital folder where you collect interesting adverts, magazine covers, film posters and screenshots of social media content. Next to each item, jot down your observations using the terminology you have learned, describing denotation, connotation, representation and narrative elements.

Practise creating as well as analysing. Design your own magazine cover for a made-up publication or storyboard a short sequence for an advert. This practical side will make you more aware of the creative decisions media producers face daily. Remember, Year 7 is about building foundations, and every observation you make now will give you a head start.
