1. Introduction: Why Case Studies Matter |

A case study in art is not just copying a famous painting. It means investigating an artwork deeply: asking questions about its elements, composition, mood, and techniques. This process trains your eye to notice details that you can then use in your own original work. For CAIE assessments, case studies show you can record observations, develop ideas, and connect your practice to wider artistic contexts.

2. Selecting Your Artist: Vincent van Gogh |

For this practical exercise we will study Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who used bold colour and dramatic brushwork to express emotion. His life story and unique style make him an ideal artist for Year 7 learners. Van Gogh painted over 2,000 artworks in just over a decade, often drawing inspiration from nature and his own feelings of excitement, loneliness or hope.

Open your sketchbook and stick in a small colour print of ‘The Starry Night’. Write down the artist’s name, date (1889), medium (oil on canvas) and size (73.7 cm × 92.1 cm). This factual recording is the first step of any good case study.

3. Focus Artwork: ‘The Starry Night’ |

‘The Starry Night’ shows a night sky filled with swirling clouds, bright stars and a crescent moon over a quiet village. A tall, flame-like cypress tree in the foreground connects the earth to the sky. Van Gogh painted this scene from memory while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The painting vibrates with energy and has become one of the most recognisable images in art history.

Before we jump into formal analysis, spend two minutes just looking. Let your eye travel across the canvas. What parts feel calm? Which feel energetic? Jot down three quick adjective notes in your sketchbook – in both English and your own words.

4. Step 1 – Describe: What Do You See?

Description is the foundation of analysis. List only the visible facts without any judgment. For example: ‘There are eleven glowing stars surrounded by swirling brushstrokes. A dark, curving tree shape rises on the left. In the bottom third, small houses with lighted windows cluster beneath rolling hills.’ Use a pencil to label these features on the image in your sketchbook.

  • Sky: swirling lines, eleven stars, a crescent moon, brushstrokes that look like waves.
  • Foreground: a tall cypress tree, dark green and almost black, shaped like a flame.
  • Middle ground: hills rolling gently, painted in short curving strokes.
  • Background: a small village with a church steeple pointing upward.

5. Step 2 – Analyse: Formal Elements |

Now go deeper by examining the formal elements. Van Gogh uses line, colour, shape, space, texture and value in very deliberate ways. Let’s create a table in your sketchbook to capture your observations. Fill in the ‘Evidence’ column with what you actually see, and the ‘Effect’ column with how it makes you feel or what it communicates.

Element Evidence in ‘The Starry Night’ Effect / Feeling
Line Thick, swirling, repeating curves in the sky; wavy contours on hills. A sense of movement, turbulence and dreaminess.
Colour Dominant blues, warm yellows and oranges for stars; muted greens for cypress. Contrast between cool calm and glowing energy; emotional tension.
Texture Thick, visible brushstrokes (impasto); paint stands up from the canvas. Makes the surface feel alive, almost sculptural; invites touch.
Value Strong contrast: bright white-yellow stars against dark blue-black sky. Emphasises the luminous quality of the night; dramatic spotlight effect.
Space Foreground cypress is large; village is small and low; sky fills upper two-thirds. Creates depth and shows the vastness of the sky over human settlement.

6. Step 3 – Analyse: Design Principles |

Alongside formal elements, Van Gogh organises his picture using key design principles. Balance is asymmetrical: the heavy cypress on the left is balanced by the bright moon and stars scattered to the right. Rhythm is created through repeated curving strokes that echo each other like music. Emphasis falls on the swirling sky, while unity is achieved by a limited colour palette of blues, yellows and greens. Try to draw a small thumbnail sketch using arrows to show movement and contrast.

  • Movement: Swirling lines lead the eye in a circular path across the sky.
  • Contrast: Bright stars against a dark night; thick tree against soft hills.
  • Proportion: The cypress tree is exaggerated in height to intensify drama.
  • Repetition: Similar curved strokes are used in the sky, hills and tree.

7. Step 4 – Interpret: Mood and Meaning |

Interpretation asks ‘Why did the artist create this?’ and ‘What does it mean?’ Van Gogh wrote in a letter to his brother Theo that he felt a ‘terrible need for religion’ and that looking at the stars made him dream. A calm village beneath a wild, living sky could represent the contrast between everyday order and the overwhelming power of emotion and nature. The cypress tree, often a symbol of death in southern Europe, reaches upward as if yearning for the infinite.

Write your own interpretation. There is no single right answer. Perhaps the painting expresses loneliness, wonder, or a celebration of the night. Support your idea with visual evidence. You might say: ‘The swirling sky feels full of life, but the tiny houses seem still and separate, which makes me think van Gogh felt both connected to nature and isolated from people.’

8. Step 5 – Evaluate: Personal Response |

Now bring your own voice into the case study. Evaluation means giving a reasoned judgment. Do you like this artwork? Why or why not? Be specific: ‘I find the thick paint exciting because it makes me want to touch the surface and follow the movements of the brush. However, the limited range of colours is a bit monotonous to my eyes, though I understand it creates unity.’ This shows you can appreciate the work’s strengths while also thinking critically.

In your CAIE sketchbook, a case study should always conclude with a short personal reflection. Sentence starters help: ‘This artwork inspires me to…’ ‘I would like to borrow the technique of…’ ‘What surprised me most was…’ This reflection is the bridge between analysis and your own practical work.

9. From Analysis to Practice: Inspired Creation |

Now the real practical exercise begins. You will create your own ’emotional nightscape’ using what you have learned from van Gogh. You are not copying ‘The Starry Night’ – you are borrowing its expressive language: swirling lines, bold colour contrasts, thick application of media, and a composition that gives most space to the sky. Think of a place at night that holds meaning for you: a garden, a city street, a view from your window, or an imaginary scene. Your task is to show a mood, not a photographic view.

Before you pick up a brush, plan in your sketchbook. Make four small thumbnail sketches trying out different compositions. Decide where the main light source will be, how much sky you want, and what kind of tree or building shape will anchor the foreground. Write a mood word next to each sketch, such as ‘calm’, ‘excited’, ‘lonely’ or ‘hopeful’. This planning stage is essential CAIE practice and shows your ability to develop ideas.

10. Materials and Techniques: Wax Resist and Watercolour |

Van Gogh used thick oil paint with a palette knife and brush to create impasto. Since oil paint is difficult in a classroom, we will explore a technique that also produces bold lines and glowing colour: wax resist with watercolour or ink. You will need a white candle, or oil pastels, watercolour paints, thick paper (at least 200 gsm), a large soft brush, and maybe a black fine liner for details. The wax will resist the watery paint, leaving light lines that glow like stars.

Practice first in your sketchbook. Draw swirling patterns with a candle on white paper – you will hardly see them. Then paint over with a wet, dark blue watercolour wash and watch the lines appear like magic. Experiment with yellow and orange oil pastels for stars, pressing hard to create a thick, waxy mark that will resist paint. This technique mirrors the contrast van Gogh achieved: dark backgrounds with bright, glowing light.

11. Your Turn: Create an Emotional Nightscape |

Now put everything together on your good paper. Start by using candle wax or white oil pastel to draw your main swirling sky lines, stars and moonlight patches. Press firmly. Then use yellow and orange oil pastels to colour in bright stars and any lit windows. Next, mix a deep blue or purple watercolour wash and quickly brush it across the whole sky. Watch the wax resist the paint – your marks will shine through. While the sky dries, use a brush with thicker watercolour or a dark pastel to paint solid shapes for trees, hills and buildings. Build up layers. Finally, if you wish, add a few fine black lines with a pen to define edges, just as van Gogh sometimes outlined forms.

Remember to keep checking your mood word. If you chose ‘calm’, maybe use slower, wider curves and more violet-blue. If you chose ‘excited’, use tighter, energetic swirls and add more orange and yellow. This connection between technique and intention is what transforms a simple landscape into personal expression. Take a photograph of your work in progress for your CAIE sketchbook as evidence of experimenting with materials.

12. Reflect and Write an Artist Statement |

Once your nightscape is finished, step back and evaluate it. Stick a copy of your final piece next to your van Gogh case study pages. Now write an artist statement (about 100–150 words) answering: What was my intention? How did I use line, colour and texture to express a mood? What challenges did I face with the wax resist technique? What would I do differently next time? This reflection closes the loop between looking, making and thinking – exactly what CAIE expects in a developmental workbook.

An example statement might be: ‘In my emotional nightscape I wanted to express a feeling of quiet hope. I borrowed van Gogh’s swirling lines to show a gentle wind. I used a wax candle to resist blue watercolour, creating glowing star-like dots. The cypress tree on the left is drawn with thick dark oil pastel to add weight. The main challenge was controlling the watercolour wash, which bled under the wax in some places. Next time I will press harder with the candle. Overall, I learned how technique can change the mood of a landscape.’

Well done! By completing this case study practical exercise, you have not only deepened your understanding of a master artist but also produced an original, expressive artwork. This is the heart of CAIE Art & Design: learning from others while finding your own visual voice. Keep your case study pages neat, annotated and reflective – they will become a valuable resource for future projects and assessments.
