📚 Year 7 CAIE History: Formulae and Theorems Quick Reference Handbook | Year 7 CAIE

History might seem to be all about stories, dates and names. But just like science or mathematics, it has its own ‘formulae’ and ‘theorems’ – powerful thinking tools that help historians turn evidence into understanding. This quick reference handbook gathers the most important historical thinking formulae, causal chains, conceptual theorems and key event summaries you will need for your Year 7 CAIE History studies. Master these, and you will not only remember facts – you will begin to think like a real historian.

1. What is History? The Core Formula |

History is not simply ‘the past’. The past is everything that has ever happened. History is the process of selecting, examining and interpreting traces of that past. We can represent this with a fundamental formula: History = Past Events + Evidence + Interpretation. Without evidence, we have no reliable record. Without interpretation, we have only a list of dates. The historian asks questions, tests sources and constructs a meaningful narrative.

A closely related theorem is: Historical knowledge is always provisional. When new evidence appears, our understanding can change. This is a strength, not a weakness.

2. Chronology Theorem |

Chronology means putting events in the order they happened. The Chronology Theorem states: Sequencing (A before B) + Context (what else was happening) = Historical Understanding. Dates are not just for memorising; they reveal causes and effects. In CAIE Year 7 we use BCE (‘Before Common Era’) / CE (‘Common Era’), sometimes also BC / AD. A timeline always flows left (earliest) to right (latest).

A practical sub-formula helps to place centuries: The 1st century CE = years 1–100; the 19th century = 1801–1900. To work out a century, take the year and add one to the hundreds digit, e.g. 1066 belongs to the 11th century.

3. Cause and Effect Formula |

Historians rarely find a single cause. Instead they build a causal web. The core formula is: Long-term cause + Short-term trigger (catalyst) = Historical Event. A long-term cause operates over years or decades, such as social tensions or economic decline. A short-term trigger is the immediate spark, like an assassination or a battle. Understanding the difference helps you write structured explanations.

Use the ‘Why? Because’ chain: start with an event and repeatedly ask ‘Why?’ to uncover layered causes. Additionally, always remember: Consequences can be intended or unintended. A king may intend to raise money; the unintended consequence might be a rebellion.

4. Source Reliability Theorem |

Not all sources tell the truth. The Reliability Theorem states: Reliability = (Nature of source) + (Origin – who made it and when) + (Purpose – why it was made) + Corroboration. A source may be biased, incomplete or exaggerated. By examining the ‘NOP’ (Nature, Origin, Purpose), you can judge how much trust to place in it. Corroboration – checking other sources – is essential.

A useful quick-check formula: A source is reliable for telling us about the author’s perspective, even if it is factually wrong. A propaganda poster is not reliable for troop numbers, but it is reliable for revealing the government’s message.

5. Change and Continuity Theorem |

History is not just about things changing. Many features of life stayed the same for centuries. The theorem: Significant Change = Degree of alteration × Pace (speed) × Scope (number of people affected). Some changes are rapid (revolutionary), others are gradual (evolutionary). Continuity can be equally important – for instance, the Church remained a constant presence throughout medieval England.

When studying a period, ask: what changed? What stayed the same? For whom? The framework ‘Turn, Turn, Continuity’ helps: identify two clear changes and one strong continuity to build a balanced account.

6. Significance Formula |

Why do we study some events and not others? The Significance Formula: Significance = Impact (depth and spread) + Duration (how long effects last) + Resonance (do people remember it later?). An event might be significant for a few people but not for the wider world. The Black Death is highly significant because it drastically reduced Europe’s population, ended the feudal labour shortage – we still study it today.

Test significance with the ‘So What?’ question. If the answer is strong, the event likely matters. Always distinguish between contemporary significance (important at the time) and retrospective significance (important to later generations).

7. The Norman Conquest 1066: The Battle Formula |

The single most famous date in English history can be unpacked with a military-political formula: Claim to throne + Hard ruler + Strategic battle + Castle-building = Conquest. When Edward the Confessor died without a clear heir, three men claimed the crown: Harold Godwinson (crowned king), William of Normandy, and Harald Hardrada of Norway. The Battle of Stamford Bridge (25 September) weakened Harold’s army, then the Battle of Hastings (14 October) saw Norman cavalry and feigned retreats defeat the shield wall. William then built castles to control the land – completing the Conquest.

Key quick-fact card for Hastings: William’s leadership + cavalry + feigned flight > Harold’s tired infantry + shield wall. The Bayeux Tapestry remains our most vivid visual source for this event.

8. Feudal System Theorem |

The feudal system can be understood through the ‘Land for Loyalty Formula’: King grants land (fief) to Barons → Barons grant land to Knights → Knights grant land to Peasants (villeins) in return for military service, labour and food. This was a hierarchical pyramid with the King at the top, then tenants-in-chief (barons and bishops), sub-tenants (knights), and peasants at the bottom. The Domesday Book (1086) recorded who owned what – a giant audit enhancing royal control.

Feudal duties theorem: Obligations flow upward (labour, rents, knight service) while protection and land flow downward. A peasant owed labour on the lord’s demesne; a knight owed 40 days of military service per year.

9. Castle Defence Formula |

Norman castles were instruments of control. The formula: Elevation + Earthworks + Stone/Wood + Defence features = Stronghold. Early motte-and-bailey castles combined a raised mound (motte) with a fortified yard (bailey). Later stone keep castles (like the Tower of London) added massive walls, arrow loops, a strong gatehouse, and often a moat. A well-designed castle could be held by a small garrison against a much larger force.

Siege theorem: Time + Starvation + undermining tactics = Castle may fall. Attackers used trebuchets, battering rams and siege towers; defenders relied on thick walls, boiling oil and the castle well.

10. Black Death: Spread and Impact Chain |

The Black Death (1348–1349 in England) followed a grim epidemiological formula: Yersinia pestis bacteria + fleas on black rats + expanding trade routes (ships and caravans) = Rapid diffusion of plague. Once in a human body, bubonic, pneumonic and septicaemic forms killed with terrifying speed. Medieval medicine (miasma theory, bloodletting) proved useless.

Impact chain: Massive population loss (approx. 1/3) → Labour shortage → Peasants could demand higher wages → Lords resisted (Statute of Labourers 1351) → Social tension → Long-term weakening of feudalism. Out of this catastrophe emerged a more flexible economy and a shaken social order.

11. Peasants’ Revolt 1381 Rapid Reference | 1381

The revolt can be condensed into a pressure-cooker formula: Poll Tax (unfair, everyone pays same) + Wage restrictions + Exploitative lords + Inspirational preacher (John Ball) = Rebellion. Led by Wat Tyler, rebels marched on London, destroyed legal records and captured the Tower of London. The young King Richard II met them and made promises, then broke them after the moment of danger passed. Tyler was killed, and the revolt was crushed, but it showed that even peasants could shake the government.

Historical significance theorem applied here: Short-term failure, long-term warning to rulers. The revolt did not immediately abolish serfdom, but the memory of it encouraged negotiation rather than blunt repression in some areas.
