1. The Colour Wheel Formulas |
The colour wheel is the artist’s roadmap for hue relationships. Understanding how colours mix and relate is fundamental to all painting, drawing, and design work.
The Primary Colour Theorem: There are three colours that cannot be created by mixing other colours. They are the pure source hues.
Primary Triad: Red, Yellow, Blue
Secondary colours are created by mixing two primary colours in equal amounts. The following table shows the precise mixing formulas.
Tertiary colours are formed by mixing a primary colour with a neighbouring secondary colour. These hues have two-word names.
Yellow + Green → Yellow-Green
Blue + Violet → Blue-Violet
Remember the complementary colour theorem: colours opposite each other on the wheel create maximum contrast and vibrate when placed side by side.
2. Tonal Value Gradient Theorem |
Tonal value refers to how light or dark a colour or area appears. Manipulating value is key to creating the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth on a flat surface.
The Tonal Gradient Theorem describes the transition of light across a form: from the brightest highlight to the darkest core shadow and the reflected light that bounces back from surrounding surfaces.
Tonal Sequence: Highlight → Mid-tone → Core Shadow → Reflected Light → Cast Shadow
A full value scale typically runs from pure white to pure black. Artists often simplify the scale into a ten-step formula for practical shading.
Value Scale Steps: 1 (White) → 10 (Black)
Applying this gradient consistently across your drawing creates the tonal range theorem in action, giving objects solidity and weight.
3. Perspective Rules |
Perspective is a mathematical system for representing three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. The fundamental rule is that parallel lines appear to converge as they recede into the distance, meeting at vanishing points on the horizon line.
One-Point Perspective: All receding parallel lines meet at a single vanishing point on the horizon.
In two-point perspective, vertical lines remain vertical, but horizontal edges recede towards two separate vanishing points placed on the horizon line. This is used when viewing a corner of an object.
Two-Point Perspective: Left receding planes → VP₁ | Right receding planes → VP₂
The size-distance formula is a crucial perspective corollary: objects farther from the viewer appear smaller. This apparent reduction follows a proportional relationship.
Apparent Size ∝ 1 / Distance from viewer
4. Proportion of the Human Figure |
Artists use proportional canons to draw the human body with believable accuracy. The most common system uses the head as a unit of measurement, creating a formula that guides overall height and the placement of key features.
Ideal Adult Proportion: Total Body Height = 7.5 × Head Height
In this formula, the midpoint of the body falls around the hip area, and the legs measure roughly four head lengths. Children have different proportions; a younger child’s head is larger in relation to the body.
Young Child Proportion: Body Height ≈ 5 × Head Height
Shoulder width and facial features also follow proportional rules. For instance, the eyes are typically positioned on the horizontal midline of the head.
Eye Line Formula: Eyes at ½ of Head Height
