📚 Year 7 CCEA Art: Summer Preparation and Bridging Programme | Year 7 CCEA
Transitioning to secondary school is an exciting step, and Art is a subject where you can truly express yourself. This bridging programme introduces you to the key skills and concepts you will explore in your Year 7 CCEA Art and Design course. You will learn how to see like an artist, experiment with different materials, and begin building a creative portfolio.
1. What is Art in Key Stage 3? |
In Key Stage 3, Art is so much more than just drawing and painting. You will explore a wide range of art forms, from sculpture and printmaking to digital media and mixed media. The CCEA curriculum encourages you to develop your own ideas, refine your practical skills, and learn to critically evaluate both your own work and the work of others. You will keep a sketchbook as a visual diary and work on projects that may last several weeks. Art lessons will help you build confidence and problem-solving abilities.
You will also learn about the formal elements of art, which are the basic building blocks used to create any artwork. These include line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, and form. Getting comfortable with these terms early will give you a big advantage.
2. The Visual Elements |
The visual elements are the ‘alphabet’ of art. Line refers to the path of a point moving through space. It can be thick, thin, wavy, straight, or broken. Tone describes how light or dark something is. Understanding tone helps you create the illusion of 3D form on a flat surface. Texture is the surface quality of an object, which can be real (actual feel) or implied (drawn to look like a texture).
Colour is perhaps the most expressive element. We will learn about the colour wheel and how colours relate to each other. Pattern involves the repetition of shapes, lines, or colours in a regular way. Shape is a 2D area enclosed by a line, while form is a 3D object that has volume. Space refers to the area around, between, or within objects.
3. Exploring Line and Mark Making |
Before you start drawing realistic objects, it is useful to experiment with lines and marks. Pick up a pencil, pen, or charcoal and make a variety of strokes: short dashes, long sweeping curves, cross-hatching, and stippling. Change the pressure to see how the thickness and darkness change. This practice builds hand-eye coordination and helps you discover your own unique drawing style.
You can also use unconventional tools to make marks, such as twigs, sponges, or even your fingers. This type of play is not just fun – it is how you learn how different materials behave on paper. Keep a page in your sketchbook for mark-making experiments.
4. The Magic of Colour |
Colour theory might sound complicated, but it starts with the colour wheel. The primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be made by mixing other colours. Secondary colours (orange, green, purple) are made by mixing two primary colours. Tertiary colours are made by mixing a primary and a secondary colour. Understanding these relationships helps you mix the exact shade you need.
Colours can also be warm (reds, oranges, yellows) or cool (blues, greens, purples). Warm colours tend to come forward in a painting, while cool colours recede. Complementary colours are opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as blue and orange. When placed side by side, they create strong contrast and make each other appear brighter. Experiment with watercolour paints or coloured pencils to try out different colour schemes.
5. Observation Drawing Skills |
Drawing from observation means drawing what you actually see, not what you think you see. Choose a simple object like a fruit, a mug, or a shoe. Spend at least 60% of your time looking at the object and only 40% at your paper. Look for basic shapes (circles, rectangles, triangles) that make up the object. Lightly sketch these shapes first to get the proportions right before adding details.
Another key skill is capturing light and shadow
