📚 Year 7 CCEA History: Summer Prep and Bridging Course | 七年级 CCEA 历史:暑期预习与衔接课程

Moving from primary school to Year 7 brings exciting changes, and history is no longer just stories about the past. In CCEA History, you will become a detective who uncovers evidence, asks questions, and pieces together how people lived, fought, and built the world we know today. This bridging course introduces the core topics you will study, from the Norman Conquest to the Black Death and the Tudors, while building the essential skills every historian needs.

1. What is History? |

History is more than memorising dates and names. It is the study of the past using the clues people left behind – written records, objects, buildings, and even bones. In Year 7, you will learn that historians often disagree about what really happened because the evidence can be interpreted in different ways.

Every period you study will ask you to think like a historian: Why did this event happen? How did it affect ordinary people? How do we know? These questions will be at the heart of your journey through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

2. The Importance of Chronology |

To understand history, you need to put events in the correct order. Chronology means arranging dates and periods on a timeline so that you can see how one event leads to another. In Year 7, you will regularly use timelines to track the major changes in medieval England.

You will become comfortable with terms like BC, AD, century, decade, and millennium. For example, the Battle of Hastings happened in 1066 AD, which is the 11th century. You will also learn to calculate the length of time between events – a vital skill for all your history work.

你将熟悉 BC(公元前)、AD(公元后)、世纪、十年和千年等术语。

3. Using Historical Sources |

Sources are the raw material of history. They can be primary sources (from the time being studied, like a diary or a piece of pottery) or secondary sources (created later, like a textbook or a documentary). In CCEA History, you will learn to analyse sources by asking: Who made it? Why? Is it reliable?

You will practise comparing different sources about the same event. Two chroniclers writing about the Norman Conquest might give very different impressions of William the Conqueror. Spotting bias, exaggeration, and gaps in evidence is a key skill that will turn you into a thoughtful historian.

4. The Norman Conquest |

In 1066, everything changed for England. When King Edward the Confessor died without an heir, several men claimed the throne. The most famous battle of the Middle Ages – the Battle of Hastings – saw William, Duke of Normandy, defeat Harold Godwinson and seize the English crown.

You will study the reasons for William’s victory: Harold’s tired army having just fought at Stamford Bridge, the use of cavalry, and a rumour that William had been killed that turned into a clever trick. After Hastings, William built castles and ordered the Domesday Book to control his new kingdom.

5. Life in Medieval England |

Under Norman rule, life for most people was shaped by their place in a strict social pyramid. The king sat at the top, followed by barons, knights, and at the bottom, peasants. Most people lived in villages and worked the land, growing crops and tending animals.

Peasant houses were simple, often made of wattle and daub (woven sticks covered in mud), with thatched roofs. Health was poor, food depended on the harvest, and entertainment came from fairs, feast days, and storytelling. This way of life lasted for centuries, but it was often vulnerable to famine and disease.

6. The Feudal System |

The feudal system was how William kept control after 1066. It was a way of organising land and people based on loyalty and service. The king owned all land and granted parts of it to his barons, who then gave land to knights, who in turn had peasants work it.

In return for land, barons and knights promised to provide soldiers and money to the king. Peasants were not free to leave and had to give a portion of their crops to their lord. This system created a clear chain of command, with everyone knowing their duties and obligations.

7. Castles: Defence and Power |

If you imagine medieval England, you probably picture a castle. After Hastings, the Normans built hundreds of motte-and-bailey castles – quickly made from earth and timber – to stamp their authority on the land. Later, these were replaced by mighty stone keeps, like the White Tower in London.

Castles were not just forts; they were homes, administrative centres, and symbols of power. You will learn about defensive features such as battlements, murder holes, and portcullises. A well-built castle could withstand a long siege, but clever attackers found ways to weaken walls with siege towers and tunnels.

8. The Church in the Middle Ages |

Religion dominated every aspect of medieval life. The Catholic Church was the largest landowner, and its influence reached from the humblest village to the royal court. People believed their place in heaven depended on following the Church’s teachings and taking part in its sacraments.

Monks and nuns living in monasteries copied books, cared for the sick, and helped the poor. Cathedrals became grand works of art. However, the Church also had great power: it collected taxes and could punish those who challenged its authority, showing that spiritual life and politics were deeply intertwined.

9. The Black Death |

In 1348, a terrible plague arrived in England. The Black Death, spread by fleas on rats, killed roughly one-third of the population. It caused fever, painful swellings called buboes, and death within days. No one understood how to cure it, and fear gripped the whole country.

The huge loss of life changed society. Fewer workers meant peasants could demand higher wages. This challenged the old feudal order. You will study how communities coped, the desperate searches for causes (from bad air to God’s punishment), and the long-term effects on power and labour.

10. The Peasants’ Revolt |

The Black Death loosened the bonds of feudalism, but many lords tried to force peasants back to old conditions. In 1381, anger boiled over in the Peasants’ Revolt. Led by men like Wat Tyler, thousands of common people marched on London demanding lower taxes and an end to serfdom.

The rebels captured the Tower of London and confronted the young King Richard II. Though promises were made, the revolt was crushed, and its leaders were executed. Yet it remains a powerful example of ordinary people fighting for freedom, and it marks a key moment in the decline of the feudal system.

11. Introduction to the Tudors |

The end of the medieval period in England is often marked by the victory of Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. As Henry VII, he founded the Tudor dynasty, which brought stability after the Wars of the Roses. In Year 7, you will begin to look at how this family transformed England.

You will meet the most famous Tudor monarch, Henry VIII, and learn about his six wives and his break from the Catholic Church. The Tudors changed religion, government, and culture so much that their story feels almost like a dramatic television series. Understanding them starts with knowing how power passed from the medieval world to the early modern age.

12. Key Skills for Year 7 History |

Throughout Year 7, you will build a toolkit of historical skills that you will use right up to GCSE and beyond. These include cause and consequence (why things happened and what results they had), change and continuity (what stayed the same and what evolved), and significance (what really mattered).

You will also develop your ability to write like a historian, using evidence to support your points and structuring clear paragraphs. Arguing a case, whether about why William won at Hastings or how much the Black Death changed society, will become second nature. Remember, history is never simply right or wrong – it is about making the best argument from the evidence you have.
