1. The Drama Triangle Formula |

Performance = Actor + Audience + Space + Story

This formula reminds us that drama is a shared art form. The actor brings action and emotion, the audience brings attention and response, the space provides the physical world, and the story gives everything purpose. Remove any one element, and the experience becomes something else entirely: a rehearsal without an audience, a monologue without a story, or an empty stage without an actor.

A key theorem follows: The Drama Completeness Theorem: A dramatic event is only fully alive when actor, audience, space and story all interact in the same moment. In your own work, always consider who is watching, where you are and what is being told.

2. Character Motivation Theorem |

Want + Obstacle = Dramatic Conflict

Every character in a scene wants something strongly. That want might be a glass of water, a crown, a friend or escape. An obstacle is anything that stands in the way: another character, a locked door, even a fear inside themselves. When want meets obstacle, dramatic conflict is born, and the audience leans forward to see what will happen next.

Example: a young wizard wants to pass her exam (want), but her spell book has been switched for a cookbook (obstacle). Her struggle to overcome this obstacle creates comedy and tension. Remember: the more urgent the want and the tougher the obstacle, the more gripping the drama.

3. Voice Projection Formula |

Projection = Breath Support + Articulation + Resonance

Being heard clearly without shouting is a skill built on three pillars. Breath support means using your diaphragm to power the voice, not just your throat. Articulation is shaping consonants and vowels precisely so every word lands. Resonance involves letting the sound vibrate in your chest, mouth and nasal cavities to give it warmth and volume. Practise deep breathing, tongue twisters and humming exercises daily.

Use the Projection Check: Can your partner at the back of the hall hear the final consonant of every sentence? If not, add more breath support and sharpen your articulation. Projection is about clarity, not volume alone.

4. Body Language Equation |

Non-verbal Meaning = Posture + Gesture + Facial Expression + Eye Contact

Over half of our communication comes from the body. Posture tells us a character’s status and mood: a king stands tall, a servant might stoop. Gestures add emphasis and intention, facial expression reveals inner feelings, and eye contact builds connection or shows avoidance. An actor must train the body to be as expressive as the voice.

A simple theorem: The Stillness-Then-Move Theorem. A moment of complete stillness before an important movement makes the gesture far more powerful. Try freezing for a heartbeat before you point, reach or step forward, and watch how the audience focuses.

5. Improvisation Golden Rule |

Offer + Accept + Build = Scene

Improvisation thrives on collaboration. An offer is any idea, action or line a performer introduces (‘Look, a giant key!’). Accepting means embracing that offer fully without blocking (‘Yes, let’s use it to open the cave!’). Building extends the idea by adding new details or raising the stakes (‘The key only works if we sing the right song’). This ‘Yes, and…’ mindset keeps a scene alive and growing.

The No Blocking Theorem: Every time you say ‘no’ or ‘that isn’t there’, the energy drops and your partner is left stranded. Instead, accept the reality your partner offers and watch the story bloom.

6. Stage Space Theorem |

Blocking = Position + Movement + Focus

Blocking is the director’s map: where actors stand, how they move and where the audience looks. Position on stage sends a message: downstage centre often draws the most attention and intimacy. Movement between positions can show relationship changes, while focus determines who or what leads the audience’s eye in each moment. Practise using ‘triangulation’ and levels to create dynamic stage pictures.

Corollary: The Power of the Diagonal. When two characters share an important moment, placing them on a diagonal line across the stage (e.g., upstage left to downstage right) often creates the strongest visual tension and connection.

7. Tension & Timing Formula |

Tension = Stakes + Conflict + Pace

Tension is the feeling that something important is about to happen. Stakes answer the question ‘What does the character stand to lose or gain?’ Conflict keeps forces pushing against each other. Pace controls the rhythm of delivery: a sudden pause can electrify a room, while rapid-fire speech can raise the heartbeat. Balancing these three lets you squeeze or release tension like a spring.

For comedy, use the Comic Surprise Formula: Pause + Unexpected Word/Action = Laughter. The mismatch between expectation and delivery is the engine of humour. Master the use of timing to let the surprise land.

8. Audience Engagement Equation |

Engagement = Empathy + Suspense + Meaning

To hold an audience, your performance must make them feel, wonder and care. Empathy arises when the audience recognises human feelings in a character, even a villain. Suspense keeps them asking ‘What next?’, and meaning ensures the story resonates beyond the stage. Ask yourself: why should this moment matter to someone watching?

A practical check: The Three-Question Theorem. After any scene, an engaged audience member should be able to answer: 1) What was the character feeling? 2) What did I worry would happen? 3) Why did it matter? Design your performance to answer these silently.

9. Rehearsal Dynamic Theorem |

Rehearsal = Experiment + Feedback + Repeat

Rehearsal is a laboratory, not a factory. Experiment means trying different choices for voice, movement and intention without fear. Feedback involves listening to your director, peers and your own observations, then using that insight to refine your work. Repeat is the cycle that turns raw ideas into polished, confident performance. The best discoveries often come when you dare to try something that feels wrong at first.

Remember the Safe-to-Fail Theorem: In early rehearsal, failure is data, not disaster. Every stumble teaches you where the performance needs strengthening, so create a space where you and your group can take creative risks.

10. Ensemble Teamwork Principle |

Ensemble = Trust + Listening + Support

Great drama is never a solo sport. Trust means believing your partners will catch you if you stumble, physically and emotionally. Listening is not just hearing the cue line, but truly absorbing the energy and meaning your scene partner is sending. Support is the active choice to make others look good, whether by giving focus, a steady hand or an enthusiastic reaction. When the ensemble breathes together, the audience feels it.

Apply the Mirror and Blend Theorem: Regularly practise mirror exercises where you copy each other’s movements in silence. This builds a group instinct, so that on stage you naturally move, pause and react as one living organism.
