Year 7 Edexcel Law: Essay Writing Framework & Model Answers | Year 7 Edexcel

📚 Year 7 Edexcel Law: Essay Writing Framework & Model Answers | Year 7 Edexcel

Writing a law essay in Year 7 may seem challenging because you need to combine clear reasoning with legal rules. This article will give you a simple, effective framework to structure your answers and a full model answer to illustrate each step. Mastering this method now will set you up for success in all future law assessments.

1. Understanding the Purpose of a Law Essay |

A law essay is not just about stating your opinion. Your task is to identify the legal issue in a given scenario, explain the relevant legal rules, apply those rules to the facts, and reach a justified conclusion. This shows the examiner that you can think like a lawyer.

Edexcel Year 7 law questions often present short stories involving everyday problems, such as taking someone else’s property, accidentally breaking an item, or breaking a promise. Your job is to decide whether the law has been broken, using a logical structure.

2. How Marks Are Awarded |

In Edexcel law assessments, marks are typically divided between knowledge of the law, application to facts, and the quality of your reasoning. Simply writing down the rule is not enough — you must show how the rule connects to the story.

Examiners look for a clear structure, correct legal terminology, and balanced arguments. If you follow the framework below, you will automatically meet these expectations and maximise your marks.

3. The Core Framework: IRAC | 核心框架:IRAC 法

The most widely used framework for legal essays is IRAC, which stands for Issue, Rule, Application, and Conclusion. This structure keeps your answer focused and ensures you do not miss any key element. Even for Year 7, IRAC is the foundation.

Step English Meaning
I – Issue What legal question needs to be answered?
R – Rule What is the relevant law or legal test?
A – Application How does the rule apply to the facts?
C – Conclusion What is the likely outcome?

In Year 7 you may also use a simpler version called PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation), but IRAC is more precise for law because it separates the rule from its application. We will stick with IRAC in this guide.

4. Step 1: Identify the Issue |

Begin by reading the scenario carefully. Ask yourself: “What area of law is involved? What exactly is being disputed?” The issue should be framed as a question that you will answer by the end of the essay. For example, “Is Jack liable for theft?” or “Did Mia form a valid contract?”

Always write the issue clearly at the start of your main body. This tells the examiner what your essay is about. You can use one or two sentences only — do not overexplain at this stage.

5. Step 2: State the Relevant Legal Rule |

Once you have the issue, you must explain the legal rule that applies. In Year 7, you might be given the rule in class or in a textbook; your job is to recall it accurately. For example, for theft you would write: “Theft is defined in the Theft Act 1968 as the dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving them of it.”

Do not just copy a long definition. Break the rule into elements. For theft, the elements are: (1) appropriation, (2) of property, (3) belonging to another, (4) dishonestly, and (5) with intention to permanently deprive. Listing the elements helps you later when you apply the law.

6. Step 3: Apply the Rule to the Facts |

This is the most important part of your essay. Go through each element of the legal rule and link it to something that happened in the scenario. Use phrases like “In this case…” or “Here, the defendant…” to show you are now talking about the facts.

For every point you make, explain why the facts satisfy (or fail to satisfy) the legal element. Do not just say “it is dishonest”. Explain what dishonesty means and why the defendant’s actions meet that test. This is where you gain the most marks.

7. Step 4: Draw a Conclusion |

Your conclusion should directly answer the issue you identified at the start. It must be supported by your application, not a random guess. If you found that all elements are satisfied, your conclusion will be that the defendant is likely guilty or liable. If one element is missing, you should explain why there is no offence.

You can also mention any defence briefly if it appears in the facts, but in Year 7 the main focus is on proving the offence. A strong conclusion will state the outcome and summarise the reasons in one or two sentences.

8. A Full Model Answer: Tom and the Chocolate Bar |

Let us now look at a complete model answer that follows the IRAC framework. The scenario is: “Tom enters a corner shop, picks up a chocolate bar, and puts it in his pocket. He walks out without paying. He later tells his friend he was hungry and thought the shop could spare it.” Your task is to advise whether Tom is guilty of theft.

Issue: The issue is whether Tom is guilty of theft under the Theft Act 1968.

Rule: Theft is defined as the dishonest appropriation of property belonging to another, with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it. There are five elements: (1) appropriation, (2) property, (3) belonging to another, (4) dishonesty, and (5) intention to permanently deprive.

Application: Here, Tom picked up the chocolate bar and put it in his pocket. That is an appropriation — he assumed the rights of the owner. The chocolate bar is clearly property, and it belonged to the shop, so elements (2) and (3) are satisfied. Tom then walked out without paying, which suggests he intended to treat the bar as his own and not return it. This shows an intention to permanently deprive. For dishonesty, we ask: would ordinary people consider his actions dishonest? Taking an item without paying is generally dishonest, and the fact that he was hungry does not provide a legal defence. Tom’s belief that the shop could spare it is not a defence either. Therefore, all five elements are met.

Conclusion: Tom is likely to be found guilty of theft. The prosecution would be able to prove all the essential elements beyond reasonable doubt.

9. Writing the Model Answer Step by Step |

Notice how the model answer does not jump between ideas. Each IRAC section is clearly separated. First the issue is stated, then the rule is laid out, then each fact is matched to the rule, and finally the conclusion brings everything together. This is exactly how you should write your own essays.

When practising, you can even label the four parts with subheadings like ‘Issue’, ‘Rule’, ‘Application’, and ‘Conclusion’ during your draft. Over time, you will internalise the structure and no longer need visible labels — the examiner will see the flow automatically.

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by stating the rule but never applying it. Avoid writing a long list of legal definitions without linking them to the facts. The examiner already knows the law — they want to see how you use it.

Another mistake is giving a conclusion without reasoning. Even if your final answer is correct, you must show the steps that led you there. Finally, do not introduce irrelevant details or repeat the same point. Keep your essay tight and focused on the question.

11. How to Improve Your Legal Writing |

To improve, practise with different scenarios regularly. You can invent your own short stories involving a broken promise, a borrowed item not returned, or a false statement. Then write a full IRAC essay for each one. Ask a teacher or a friend to check whether your application is convincing.

Reading model answers like the one above will also help you absorb the language and structure. Try copying it by hand once — it may feel old‑fashioned, but it helps your brain remember the pattern. Over time, your essays will become clearer and more persuasive.

12. Final Tips for Success |

Before you finish, always read through your essay and ask: “Have I identified the issue? Stated the rule? Applied every element? Reached a clear conclusion?” If the answer to all four questions is ‘yes’, you are on the right track.

Remember that law is a skill, not just a set of facts to memorise. The more you practise the IRAC framework, the more natural it becomes. With this guide and the model answer provided, you now have everything you need to write an outstanding Year 7 law essay.
