📚 Year 7 Edexcel Physics Report Writing: Framework and Model Answer | Edexcel 7

Writing a physics lab report in Year 7 is not just about recording what you did – it is about learning to think like a scientist. The Edexcel curriculum expects you to communicate your investigation clearly, using the correct structure and scientific vocabulary. This guide breaks down a simple framework you can follow every time, along with a full model answer on a pendulum investigation, so you can see exactly what a high-quality report looks like.

1. Why Scientific Writing Matters in Year 7 Physics |

In Year 7 Edexcel Physics, you are beginning to develop the skills of planning, carrying out and evaluating practical work. Writing a clear report helps you to organise your thinking, spot patterns in data and learn how to justify your conclusions. It also trains you to question whether an experiment was fair and reliable – exactly what the Edexcel mark schemes reward.

When you write scientifically, you are not just listing steps. You are telling a logical story: what you wanted to find out, how you made it a fair test, what happened and what it means. This skill will form the foundation for all your future science studies at KS3, IGCSE and beyond.

2. The Basic Structure of a Lab Report |

Most Year 7 Edexcel investigations follow a common report structure. Teachers and examiners look for these headings and will give you credit for presenting your work in a logical order. The typical sections are shown in the table below.

What to include
Title 标题 A clear statement of what you investigated.
Aim 目的 What you wanted to find out, often starting ‘To investigate…’
Hypothesis 假设 A prediction with a scientific reason.
Variables 变量 Independent, dependent and control variables.
Method 方法 Numbered steps, equipment list, how to make it fair.
Results 结果 Table of data with units, graph if needed.
Conclusion 结论 What you found out, linked to the hypothesis.
Evaluation 评估 Reliability, anomalies, improvements.

3. Crafting the Title and Aim |

Your title should be a concise description of what you investigated. Avoid vague phrases like ‘Light experiment’. Instead, write something like ‘Investigating how the distance from a light source affects the size of a shadow.’ The aim is a single sentence that restates this: ‘To investigate how the distance from a light source affects the size of a shadow.’

In Edexcel-marked tasks, pupils often lose simple marks by writing an aim that does not match the title or by leaving out the independent and dependent variables. Always include both variables in your aim, even if they seem obvious, for example: ‘To investigate the effect of the length of a pendulum on its period.’

4. Formulating a Strong Hypothesis |

A hypothesis is not just a guess – it is a prediction supported by a scientific reason. For Year 7, you can use the ‘If… then… because…’ structure. For instance: ‘If the length of the pendulum is increased, then the time for one swing will increase because the pendulum bob has a longer distance to travel and gravity acts on it in the same way.’

Avoid writing a hypothesis that simply repeats the aim, like ‘I think the length will change the period.’ That does not explain why. Even at Year 7, Edexcel expects you to try to explain your reasoning, linking back to basic physics ideas you have covered in class, such as forces, energy or waves.

5. Identifying and Controlling Variables |

Every fair test has three types of variables. The independent variable is the one you deliberately change. The dependent variable is the one you measure. Control variables are all the other factors you must keep the same to make the test fair. For a pendulum investigation, the independent variable is the length of the string; the dependent variable is the period (time for one swing); and control variables include the mass of the bob, the angle of release and using the same stopwatch.

In your report, list the control variables and briefly explain how you kept them constant, e.g. ‘The mass of the bob was kept the same by using the same 50 g mass every time.’ This shows the examiner that you understand why fair testing matters and is a common area where marks are gained.

6. Writing a Reproducible Method |

A good method reads like a recipe – another scientist should be able to repeat your experiment exactly and get similar results. Write in the past tense and use numbered steps. Begin with a list of equipment, including quantities and ranges: ‘Stopwatch (0.01 s), metre ruler, clamp stand, 50 g mass, string (10 cm to 100 cm).’ Then describe what you did, step by step.

Make sure to mention how you made it a fair test: ‘The angle of release was kept small (about 10°) by marking it on a protractor.’ Also mention repeating measurements: ‘Each length was tested three times and a mean period was calculated.’ This attention to detail directly matches the Edexcel practical skills criteria.

7. Presenting Results: Tables and Graphs |

Draw a neat results table with clear headings and units in parentheses, like ‘Length (cm)’ and ‘Time for 10 swings (s)’. Always include a column for the calculated mean and the final period. If you have repeated measurements, show all trials. A well-organised table makes it easier to spot patterns and any anomalous results.

Where possible, plot a graph with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. Label axes with quantity and unit, and use a pencil and ruler. Do not connect the dots with a zigzag; draw a smooth line of best fit. For a pendulum, graph ‘Length (cm)’ on the x-axis and ‘Period (s)’ on the y-axis, and describe the trend: ‘As the length increases, the period increases, but not in a straight line.’

8. Drawing a Valid Conclusion |

Your conclusion must answer the aim and refer back to your hypothesis. Start by stating what you found: ‘The results show that the longer the pendulum, the greater its period.’ Then compare this with your hypothesis: ‘This supports my hypothesis that increasing length would increase the period.’ Use data values from your table to back up your statement, e.g. ‘At 20 cm the period was 0.90 s, while at 80 cm the period was 1.80 s.’

Avoid adding new information or guessing. If your results do not match the hypothesis, say so honestly and suggest a possible scientific reason. Edexcel values honest evaluation of data over forcing a conclusion to fit. The phrase ‘This disproves my hypothesis because…’ can still earn full marks if well justified.

9. Evaluating Your Experiment |

Evaluation is where you judge how reliable your method was and how confident you are in the results. Mention any anomalies (results that do not fit the pattern) and try to explain what caused them. For example: ‘One trial at 60 cm gave a period of 2.1 s, which is much higher than the others; this may have been due to miscounting the swings.’

Suggest at least two improvements, for instance: ‘Use a light gate connected to a data logger to measure the period more accurately, rather than a stopwatch.’ ‘Use a protractor to ensure the release angle is always 10°.’ Also comment on the range of data: ‘I could extend the length up to 150 cm to see if the trend continues.’ This shows higher-level thinking.

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

One common mistake is confusing the period with the time for 10 swings. Always divide the total time by the number of swings to get the period. Another is forgetting to include units in the table or on graph axes – without units, your data is meaningless to a reader. Also, pupils often write a method as instructions using ‘you’ or ‘I’ in the present tense; always use the past, impersonal voice.

In the hypothesis, avoid using the word ‘amount’ when you mean a measurable quantity like ‘length’ or ‘period’. Instead of ‘I think the amount of time will go up,’ write ‘If the length increases, then the period will increase because…’. Precision in language is a key part of the Edexcel Physics mark scheme.

11. Model Answer: Pendulum Period Investigation |

Below is a model answer that follows the framework. Read it carefully, then use it as a checklist for your own reports.

Title: Investigating how the length of a pendulum affects its period.

Aim: To investigate the effect of pendulum length on the period of a simple pendulum.

Hypothesis: If the length of the pendulum is increased, then the period will increase because the bob has a greater distance to travel and the restoring force from gravity remains similar, leading to a longer time to complete one swing.

Variables: Independent variable – length of string (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 cm). Dependent variable – period (time for one complete swing) measured by timing 10 swings and dividing by 10. Control variables – mass of bob (50 g kept the same), angle of release (kept small, about 10°, using a protractor mark), same stopwatch, same person timing.

Method: 1. Clamp the string to the stand and attach the 50 g mass. 2. Measure the length from the clamp point to the centre of the bob using a metre ruler. Record 10 cm as the first length. 3. Pull the bob to one side until it makes a 10° angle, then release it without pushing. 4. Start the stopwatch when the bob passes the lowest point and count 10 complete swings. Stop the stopwatch at the 10th swing. 5. Record the time in a table. Repeat twice more and calculate a mean. 6. Repeat steps 2–5 for all other lengths (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 cm). 7. Divide each mean time by 10 to find the period.

Results: (Example data shown in a table)

Length (cm) Time for 10 swings (Trial 1) (s) Trial 2 (s) Trial 3 (s) Mean time for 10 swings (s) Period (s)
10 6.2 6.3 6.2 6.23 0.62
20 9.0 8.8 9.1 8.97 0.90
30 11.0 11.2 11.1 11.1 1.11
40 12.8 13.0 12.9 12.9 1.29
50 14.2 14.5 14.3 14.33 1.43
60 16.0 15.8 15.9 15.9 1.59
70 17.3 17.5 17.4 17.4 1.74
80 18.5 18.7 18.6 18.6 1.86

Conclusion: The results show that as the length increased, the period increased. At 10 cm the period was 0.62 s, while at 80 cm it was 1.86 s, meaning the pendulum took longer to swing when the string was longer. This supports my hypothesis. The relationship appears curved on a graph because doubling the length does not exactly double the period.

Evaluation: The repeated readings were close together, suggesting the results are reliable. One anomaly could have been the second trial at 50 cm being slightly higher than the others, possibly due to reaction time error when stopping the stopwatch. To improve, I could use a light gate to measure the period more precisely. I could also use a wooden block to fix the release angle for each trial. Extending the lengths to 150 cm would give more data to confirm the pattern.

12. Final Tips for Edexcel Marking Criteria | Edexcel

Always check that your report flows logically from aim to evaluation. Use scientific language wherever possible, such as ‘period’ instead of ‘swing time’, and ‘anomalous result’ instead of ‘weird number’. Your teacher is looking for evidence that you
