📚 Year 7 Edexcel Psychology: Case Study Analysis in Practice | 案例分析实战演练:Year 7 Edexcel 心理学

In Year 7 Psychology, you will be asked to read and analyse real-life scenarios using what you have learned in lessons. This article is a hands-on workshop designed to build your confidence with case study questions. It will guide you through the key steps of analysis, show you worked examples, and help you avoid common errors. By the end, you will be ready to tackle any case-based question in your Edexcel assessment.

1. What Is a Case Study in Psychology? |

A case study in psychology is a detailed examination of an individual, a group or a particular event. Unlike a laboratory experiment, it takes place in a real-world context. In your Edexcel Year 7 course, you will often be presented with a short description of a situation and then asked to explain what is happening using psychological theories.

These tasks test whether you can move beyond simply remembering facts. They assess your ability to select the right knowledge and apply it to a new scenario. Think of a case study as a puzzle where you already have the tools to solve it.

2. Why Case Studies Matter for Year 7 Students |

Case studies bring psychology to life. Instead of only learning about theories from a textbook, you get to see how those theories explain the actions of real people. This deepens your understanding and makes the subject much more memorable.

Furthermore, case analysis is a core skill examined by Edexcel. Marks are awarded for identifying the relevant psychological concept, explaining it accurately, and linking it back to the details of the scenario. Practising this skill regularly will not only boost your exam performance but also sharpen your critical thinking.

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Analysing a Case |

Step 1: Identify the psychological topic. Read the scenario and ask yourself: is this about memory, social influence, child development, or learning? Look for keywords like ‘forget’, ‘peer pressure’, ‘younger child’, or ‘reward’.

Step 2: Pick out the key facts. Underline or note down the behaviours and outcomes described in the case. For example, how many items did the person remember? What did the group do? These details will be crucial when you write your explanation.

Step 3: Select the appropriate theory or study. Decide which psychological model or piece of research best explains the key facts. If the case is about memory capacity, the Multi-Store Model is likely the right choice.

Step 4: Explain using a clear structure. Use the PEEL technique (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) to build your paragraphs. Always start your explanation by stating the concept you are applying.

Step 5: Check you have linked back to the case. Every explanation should end with a sentence that connects the theory back to the specific person or situation in the case. Avoid writing generic definitions without mentioning the scenario.

4. Case Example 1: Memory in the Classroom |

Scenario: Mr. Smith gives his Year 7 students a list of 20 words and asks them to recall as many as they can immediately. On average, the students remember about 7 words. He then asks them to count backwards from 50 in threes for 30 seconds. When they try to recall the words again, the average drops to just 3 words.

This straightforward case is ideal for applying the Multi-Store Model of memory. The immediate recall of about 7 items points directly to the capacity of short-term memory (STM).

5. Applying Concepts: The Multi-Store Model |

The Multi-Store Model (Atkinson and Shiffrin) describes memory as consisting of three separate stores: sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Information moves between them through attention and rehearsal.

In the classroom example, the words initially enter sensory memory. Because the students pay attention, the information passes into STM. The recall of 7 words matches the model’s claim that STM holds 7±2 items.

The counting backwards task acted as an interference. It prevented the students from rehearsing the words, so they could not keep them in STM. After 30 seconds, without rehearsal, the trace decayed and only a few items could be retrieved. This illustrates STM’s limited duration.

If the students had been allowed to repeat the words or if the words had been linked to a story, rehearsal could have transferred some information into long-term memory, leading to much better recall later.

6. Case Example 2: Conformity on the Playground |

Scenario: Jamie notices that a popular group of Year 7 students have all started wearing a specific brand of trainers. Even though Jamie thinks the trainers look awkward, he feels pressure to buy them too. Within a week, most of the year group is wearing the same brand. Jamie says later, ‘I just didn’t want to stand out.’

This is a clear example of conformity—a type of social influence where an individual changes their behaviour or opinions to fit in with the majority. Several classic studies help explain Jamie’s actions.

Normative social influence occurs when someone conforms because they want to be accepted and avoid rejection. Jamie’s comment about not wanting to stand out is a textbook sign of normative influence. Asch’s line study (1951) showed that even when the majority is clearly wrong, people often conform to avoid feeling uncomfortable.

In addition, informational social influence may be at play. Students might believe that if the popular group is wearing those trainers, they must be the ‘right’ choice. This is especially common in ambiguous situations where people look to others for guidance.

When writing a case analysis, you should name the type of conformity and link the specific behaviour from the scenario to the explanation. For example: ‘Jamie conformed due to normative social influence because his main motivation was to avoid standing out from the majority of his year group.’

7. Writing a PEEL Paragraph for Case Studies | 为案例分析撰写 PEEL 段落

A strong answer in Edexcel Year 7 Psychology uses the PEEL structure. This keeps your writing focused and ensures you pick up all the available marks.

  • Point: State the psychological idea you are going to use.
  • Evidence: Provide a brief piece of evidence from the scenario or from a key study.
  • Explanation: Explain how the theory works in more detail, using psychological terminology.
  • Link: Relate your explanation directly back to the person or event in the case.

Here is a PEEL paragraph written for the memory case study:

Point: The students’ immediate recall of about 7 words can be explained by the limited capacity of short-term memory (STM).
Evidence: According to the Multi-Store Model, STM can hold 7±2 items.
Explanation: Because the students were asked to recall the words straight after hearing them, the information was still active in their STM. Rehearsal helped some of them maintain the trace, but the finite capacity meant that only a few items could be held at once.
Link: This is why the average recall in Mr. Smith’s class was around 7, neatly fitting the model’s prediction.

Notice that the ‘Link’ sentence mentions ‘Mr. Smith’s class’. This is what turns a generic answer into a specific case analysis.

8. Case Example 3: Piaget’s Conservation Task |

Scenario: Lucy is 5 years old. She watches an adult pour the same amount of orange juice into two identical short glasses. Then the adult pours the juice from one of the glasses into a tall, narrow glass. Lucy insists the tall glass now has more juice, even though she saw that no extra juice was added. Her older brother, aged 8, correctly says the two amounts are the same.

This case allows us to apply Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, specifically the concept of conservation. Conservation is the understanding that quantity remains the same even when appearance changes.

Lucy is in the pre-operational stage (ages 2-7). Children at this stage lack the ability to conserve because they focus on only one aspect of a situation, a tendency called centration. Lucy centres on the height of the juice, ignoring the width of the glass. She also lacks reversibility—the idea that an action can be mentally reversed. She cannot imagine pouring the juice back into the original glass to check the quantity.

Her 8-year-old brother, however, is in the concrete operational stage (ages 7-11). He can de-centre and consider both height and width. He has also mastered reversibility and therefore correctly judges that the amounts must be equal. When you analyse this case, always mention the name of the stage, define centration, and link it to the child’s exact words or actions in the scenario.

9. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及如何避免

Mistake 1: Describing the case instead of explaining it. Many students simply retell the story. You must go further and use psychology to explain why the behaviour occurred.

Mistake 2: The ‘name-drop’ without a link. Writing ‘this is normative social influence’ is not enough. Always explain what that term means and connect it directly to a detail in the case.

Mistake 3: Confusing similar concepts. For example, mixing up ‘short-term memory duration’ with ‘short-term memory capacity’. Before writing, check your notes to ensure you are using the right piece of knowledge.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the question wording. If the question says ‘explain using the Multi-Store Model’, do not bring in other models like Working Memory unless asked. Stick to the theory named.

10. Practice Case for You to Try |

Scenario: Ms. Brown notices that her Year 7 class is often noisy when they enter the room. She decides to give a ‘star sticker’ to each student who sits down quietly and is ready to learn. After two weeks, almost
