📚 Year 7 OCR Media Studies: Formula & Theorem Quick Reference | Year 7 OCR

Welcome to your quick reference guide for Year 7 OCR Media Studies. Just like in science or maths, media has its own ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’ that help us understand how TV shows, films, advertisements and social media content are made and why they affect us. These are not number equations but thinking frameworks that decode everything from camera angles to character types. Keep this handbook close as you analyse media texts and build your own creative projects.

1. The Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Blumler and Katz (1974) suggested that audiences actively choose media to satisfy specific needs. This formula breaks down four main reasons why we engage with media.

Personal Identity: Media helps us reinforce our own values and understand ourselves. For example, watching a vlogger who shares your hobby makes you feel part of a community.

Information: We use media to learn about the world, from news bulletins to documentary films. A weather app is a classic tool for information seeking.

Entertainment: This covers enjoyment, relaxation and escapism. Binge watching a comedy series or playing a video game delivers fun and emotional release.

Social Interaction: Media can connect us with others. Discussing the latest episode of a drama on group chats or bonding with family over a film fulfills this need.

2. Reception Theory: Encoding and Decoding |

Stuart Hall’s theory states that a media producer encodes a message, but the audience can decode it in three different ways. The meaning is not fixed.

Stuart Hall

Dominant / Preferred Reading: The audience accepts the intended message fully. If an advert shows a runner winning with a certain drink, you accept that the drink helps success.

Negotiated Reading: You partially agree but modify the message to fit your own experience. You might think the drink tastes good but doubt it makes you a champion.

Oppositional Reading: You completely reject the intended meaning because of your own beliefs. You might recognise that the runner’s victory is purely due to training and find the advert misleading.

3. Propp’s Character Archetype Theorem |

Vladimir Propp analysed hundreds of folk tales and identified seven recurring character types. This theorem still applies to modern films, books and games.

Vladimir Propp

  • The Hero: The protagonist who goes on a quest. (Chinese:
  • The Villain: The antagonist who opposes the hero.
  • The Dispatcher: The character who sends the hero on the mission.
  • The Donor: Gives the hero a magical object or advice.
  • The Helper: Assists the hero throughout the journey.
  • The Princess: A reward for the hero, often needing rescue.
  • The False Hero: Pretends to be good but is revealed as deceitful.

4. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium Model |

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most stories follow a simple five-stage structure moving from balance to chaos and back to a new balance. It works like a story equation.

Tzvetan Todorov

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

Equilibrium: The normal, peaceful start. (Chinese:

Disruption: An event disrupts the balance.

Recognition: Characters realise the disruption.

Attempt to Repair: The hero tries to fix the problem.

New Equilibrium: Order is restored but the world is changed.

5. Barthes’ Enigma and Action Codes |

Roland Barthes argued that narratives are driven by two key codes that hook the audience and move the plot forward.

Roland Barthes

Enigma Code: This creates mysteries and questions that the audience wants answered. A film might open with a locked door, a strange sound or a hidden letter. We keep watching to solve the puzzle.

Action Code: Any action that suggests a further action will follow, building tension. A character picking up a knife or a car speeding away signals that a significant event is about to happen.

6. Semiotics: Sign, Signifier, Signified |

Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotics is the study of signs. Every media sign is made of two parts that together create meaning.

Ferdinand de Saussure

Signifier / 能指 The physical form: word, image, sound. A red rose on a card.
The mental concept it evokes. Love, romance, passion.
Sign / 符号 The combined meaning. The rose symbolises love.

7. Mise-en-scène Elements |

Mise-en-scène is French for ‘placed in the scene’ and refers to everything visible in a frame. This visual formula helps directors communicate mood and character.

Setting: The location and backdrop, e.g. a spooky forest or a shiny lab. (Chinese:

Lighting: High-key lighting creates a bright, happy mood; low-key lighting with shadows builds suspense.

Costume & Make-up: Tells us about a character’s personality, era or status. A lab coat suggests a scientist.

Props: Objects that actors interact with, like a magic wand or a detective’s magnifying glass.

Performance & Movement: Facial expressions and body language convey emotion.

8. Camera Shot Size Theorem |

The distance between the camera and the subject determines how we connect with a character. Each shot size follows a simple rule of engagement.

Extreme Long Shot (ELS) / 大远景 Shows environment; character is tiny. Used to establish setting.
Long Shot (LS) / 远景 Full body visible. Shows action and setting.
Waist up. Common for dialogue; connects us to character while showing some background.
Close-up (CU) / 特写 Face fills frame. Reveals emotions and reactions.
Extreme Close-up (ECU) / 大特写 Focuses on a detail (eyes, hand). Creates intensity or symbolism.

9. Audience Classification: Demographic Profiling |

Media producers use demographic formulas to categorise their audience. The most common UK system is the NRS social grades, based on occupation and income.

A Upper Middle Class / 上层中产 Doctor, lawyer, senior manager / 医生、律师、高级经理

Besides social grade, producers also segment by age, gender, lifestyle and media habits to target adverts and shows effectively.

10. Stereotypes and Countertypes |

Representation in media often relies on shortcuts. A stereotype is a simplified, often exaggerated image of a group. A countertype challenges these expectations.

Stereotype Formula: Repeated traits associated with a group, e.g. teenagers portrayed as moody and rebellious, or scientists as geeky loners in glasses.

Countertype Formula: The opposite of a stereotype; it surprises the audience and encourages thinking. A strong, logical female hero in action films or a sensitive, caring male nurse breaks traditional boxes.

When analysing media, ask yourself: Is this a fair representation? Who created it and why?

11. Media Language: Denotation and Connotation |

Roland Barthes also taught us to read images on two levels. This formula helps you decode deeper meanings in posters, adverts and photos.

Roland Barthes

Denotation: What you literally see. For a movie poster of a superhero standing on a rooftop at night, denotation is simply: a person in cape on a building.

Connotation: The associated meanings and feelings. The same image connotes mystery, power, isolation and vigilante justice. These come from cultural understanding.

12. Binary Oppositions in Media |

Claude Lévi-Strauss believed that narratives are built on conflicts between opposing forces. This theorem of binary oppositions drives drama.

Claude Lévi-Strauss

Good vs Evil / 善与恶 Harry Potter vs Voldemort / 哈利波特与伏地魔
The rebellious teen versus the strict parent in sitcoms / 情景喜剧中叛逆青少年与严厉家长
Survival films like The Day After Tomorrow / 生存电影如《后天》
Rich vs Poor / 富与穷 The elegant upper class versus the struggling underclass in period dramas / 古装剧中优雅的上层阶级与挣扎的下层阶级
Justice vs Injustice / 正义与不公 Heroic lawyer versus a corrupt system / 英雄律师与腐败体系

These opposites simplify conflict and help audiences quickly grasp the moral universe of a story.
